COMMUNITY ARTICLE Empowering Lives Through Play Building Inclusive Communities One Playground at a Time Imagine a playground where every child regardless of ability can swing slide and climb with ease This vision is what drives initiatives like the Idaho Playground Project a nonprofit dedicated to creating fully accessible and inclusive playgrounds in elementary schools across Idaho While the focus is on play the impact reaches far beyond the swings and slides In September 2023 Twin Falls took a leap towards inclusivity by installing its very first fully accessible and inclusive adaptive school playground at Sawtooth Elementary Now in a continuation of that project Harrison Elementary School is partnering with the Idaho Playground Project to build their own adaptive playground With a student population of 385 including 110 in their developmental preschool or special education programs Harrison Elementary recognizes the importance of providing equal opportunities for all its students Among the students eagerly awaiting this new playground at Harrison is JJ Comer a vibrant first grader JJ was born with a rare condition called Rhombencephalosynapsis which resulted in the absence of part of his cerebellum As a result JJ relies on a wheelchair and walker for mobility CSI 1 4 Page Vertical Kool Minds 1 4 Page Vertical www koolminds com Summer 2024 7

COMMUNITY ARTICLE Routine Reading A Summer Must for a Sharp Mind The end of the school year means a change in routines for many families One routine that must stay in place is the practice of reading every day The summer slide isn t a myth it s a well documented phenomenon where students skills seem to slide back to a previous level when they return to school in the fall The explanation is simple without consistent practice there is often a decline in academic skills This is especially true when it comes to reading and literacy skills Daily reading serves as a shield against this regression keeping those young minds sharp throughout the summer months It s like a workout for the brain Just like physical exercise strengthens muscles regular reading exercises the mind enhancing comprehension vocabulary and all aspects of literacy This might sound like a lot of work but there are a few simple ways to keep your children s brains active 1 A Topic of Interest While students might be required to read books on specific topics during the school year there s no reason to force a child to read about a topic they aren t interested in during the summer This is a time for children to read for fun and explore their passions through reading The public library can be a great and inexpensive place to find books that fit any interest 2 Reading with your Child It can be a struggle to get the youngest children motivated to read on their own especially when they are still learning to read Summer is a great time to enjoy reading together Reading to your child can be of benefit even if the child isn t reading every word themselves As you read ask your child to follow along pointing to the words as you say them 3 Be an Example Setting aside time to read can be hard but when children see adults reading they understand that this activity is a priority Try setting aside a small amount of family reading Ovation 1 4 Page Vertical Clark Oral 1 4 Page Vertical We are passionately committed to improving the lives of our patients by combining clinical excellence with cutting edge technology In our office we love getting to know our patients and take a sincere interest in their well being Give us a call for your oral maxillofacial needs We have two locations to conveniently serve you Burley 208 831 2901 Twin Falls 208 831 2900 14 w w w s o u t h e r n i d a h o k i d s c o m

sponsored by HEALTH WELLNESS HEALTHYHABITS Situational Awareness During the Summer With summer approaching it is a great time to create situational awareness habits to protect your children as they play outdoors and interact with strangers Situational awareness means you are always aware of your surroundings and have your head on a swivel For example you re walking down the hallway at school you see a person with questionable behavior As they get closer you notice they do not have a visitor pass What do you do We encourage you to listen to your inner voice trust your instincts and report that person to staff immediately Another example your smoke detectors activate while you re asleep at home Having an escape plan and practicing that escape plan is a form of situational awareness A typical child abductor may use verbal ploys by directing or demanding the child to come to them engaging in conversation with a child or impersonating someone such as a trusted family friend medical professional or police officer They often offer food candy or drinks and ask children to help locate something often an animal A few opportunities to put Situational Awareness into practice this summer include 1 Trust your instincts If you see something say something Pay attention to your gut feelings or any suspicious behavior from individuals around your child If something feels off remove your child from the situation and report any concerns to the appropriate authorities 2 Teach stranger awareness Educate your child about the concept of strangers and the importance of not talking to or accepting anything without your permission It is important to teach children that an adult would never ask a child for help directions lost pet etc 3 Keep your head on a swivel and always be looking Keep your child within your line of sight when they are playing or moving around in public areas Avoid distractions like phone usage that may hinder your ability to monitor their activities 4 Always be prepared Have an escape plan for any situation Randy Hall Emergency Manager St Luke s Sponsored by 21 S u m m e r 2 0 2 4

COMMUNITY ARTICLE How Do Children Benefit From Being Outdoors To express his disapproval of the week long ban on electronics my 9 year old said boisterously enough for me to hear him from the neighboring room I m bored I chuckled inside while relishing the moment Perfect No suggestions were given nor commercial toys provided He was left merely with his own imagination The electronics and music he had been using to entertain himself had robbed him of his fullest capacity to be creative socialize exercise and so much more And then it happened he wandered outside Did I feel bad Honestly for a minute I did I felt like a no fun old fashioned mean mama But that feeling quickly left when I thought about the benefits he would gain from this mama being an electronic thief in hopes of him exiting the house Was the pain of boredom worth the price to get him outside Absolutely Here are just a few of the physical mental and emotional benefits he was about to gain Just by stepping into the sunshine one s pineal gland is activated This helps to build a stronger immune system make better decisions and have a more positive perception of the world It also controls one s sleep patterns Hmm Ever wonder why there s a higher rate of sickness and sadness as we move indoors more during the fall and winter months Could having less sunshine and outdoor time be a significant contributing factor But benefits from being outdoors don t stop with the pineal gland Merely relocating outdoors promotes more physical movement which leads to more advanced motor skill development increased balance and coordination stronger muscles and bones and greater physical endurance When a child is more coordinated stronger and has more endurance another positive effect happens confidence builds These are quite significant gains our children and ourselves can obtain simply by being outside On the flip side staying indoors increases the frequency of snacking and adds more calories to Makona Therapy 1 2 Page Horizontal 22 w w w s o u t h e r n i d a h o k i d s c o m

COMMUNITY ARTICLE a child s day With abundance of food especially processed foods more readily available to us than any other time in history it s no wonder that 1 3 of children in the United States today are overweight or obese However it s not just the physical body that reaps rewards when a child moves outside one s mind and attitude also benefit greatly The mind becomes more creative curious and self directed and a child s problem solving skills increase Imagine your child has an assortment of moveable parts materials they can move and manipulate themselves or with other children These might be things such as sticks rocks rope cardboard boxes egg cartons pine cones old pots and pans a sheet pipe etc I know what you re thinking this sounds like a junkyard However these types of supplies can promote hours of endless creative play I won t attempt to make a list of what could be created when a child is left to self direct with such items but a few benefits of unstructured outdoor play with moveable parts are a decrease in stress depression anger aggression and symptoms of ADHD along with an increase in happiness focus more creativity and curiosity Additionally when engaged in this type of play Family Health Services 1 2 Page Horizontal 23 S u m m e r 2 0 2 4

COMMUNITY ARTICLE with other children teamwork and sharing skills are also enhanced I don t think any parent would want their child to miss out on this lengthy list of benefits But to all those busy parents don t fret if you missed soccer tryouts There doesn t need to be a grand plan an official team event or even a set plan at all Allowing time for your child to be bored is actually good for them However if you want to make suggestions here are a few ideas to try Challenge your child to build an obstacle course for you both to race through in the backyard Provide a hose with a multi patterned spray nozzle and a bottle of dish soap then step back Get an old film camera with or without film depending on age and let them photograph nature Have a whip cream battle fly a kite or bathe the dog Move traditionally inside tasks outside homework folding laundry on a tarp meal time etc Even though we might see the physical mental and emotional benefits for our children as the main reason to get them to move outdoors being outside also results in exploration and appreciation for nature There are many opportunities especially in our community for children to learn about and develop stewardship for animals and the Earth making it an even better place to live for themselves and future generations Mindy Petramalo Head of School Acton Academy CHALLENGE For the next week track how much outdoor time your child is getting each day including outdoor time at school Would he or she benefit from more time outside Write down the benefits you see in them physically mentally and emotionally as you encourage more outdoor play Scan the code for a handy tracking chart Acton 1 4 Page Vertical MV Ped Cancer 1 4 Page Vertical 24 w w w s o u t h e r n i d a h o k i d s c o m
