SCIENCE SPOT STEM While The Sun Shines Summer is a great time of year to spend outside with your family The long days the flexible schedules and the warm weather are perfect ingredients to explore nature and jump into new experiences Here are a few simple suggestions that helps our family has done to create fun memories each summer Gardening is a great way to grow your own food and flowers But if planting a big garden is not practical for your family purchase a packet of mammoth sunflower seeds Choose a sunny spot in the yard to plant the seeds Mammoth sunflowers grow quickly and by the time kids are back to school in August the flowers will tower over them If you want to add a little engineering to your flower display make a sunflower house Prepare an open space in a sunny corner of the yard and plant the seeds in a rectangular shape By mid summer you can train the sunflower stalks to create a magical house that keeps growing Making bubble solution is a simple and easy way to experiment with formulas and tools used to make the largest bubbles Try different ingredients like glycerin and dish soap and provide a range of kitchen gadgets for kids to play with Summer birthdays are the perfect time to make ice cream in a bag With a few ingredients and some rock salt kids can dance with their bags until the tasty treat is ready Rookie mistake warning don t dump the ice water on the grass when this activity is done The salt will kill the grass I learned that the hard way One tradition I am looking forward to is Grandma Camp Although our grandchildren are still in the toddler stage I hope to spend a few days with them Burley Kids Dental 1 2 Page Horizontal 6 www southernidahokids com

BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS Preschool Pete the Cat Goes Camping by James and Kimberly Dean In this cute early reader book Pete and his family go camping It s Pete s first time and he learns how to fish make s mores and enjoy all the camping activities However when Bob tells him about a creature called Bigfoot Pete becomes scared Pete s mom and dad tell him not to worry but being out in the woods at night with strange noises all around Pete starts to wonder Is Bigfoot nice or scary 4th 6th grade Katt vs Dogg by James Patterson and Chris Grabenstein A tail as old as time dogs versus cats Who is better Molly and Oscar are opposites in every way but when they both get lost in the woods while their families are out camping they must put their cat and dog differences aside and work together so they can get home Besides surviving in the woods can they also learn to be friends too Grab this cute and engaging illustrated chapter book to find out K 3rd grade A Campfire Tail by Sarah Glenn Marsh Dragon is so excited to go to summer camp but nervous since he s never been before At camp a young girl takes him under her wing as her camp buddy to show him the ropes Unfortunately the more Dragon tries to do well at camp activities the more he messes up The other campers don t want anything to do with him or his buddy Even his buddy starts to get angry with him Can poor Dragon make amends before the summer camp ends 7TH GRADE Camp by Kayla Miller Book number two in the Click series Olive and Willow are going to summer camp and they plan to make the most of it But when Olive starts making friends and getting along with the other campers easier than her friend Willow it starts to create a rift in their own friendship Can the two of them survive the summer and will their friendship endure RECOMMENDATIONS FROM BURLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY GIVE YOUR MARKETING A Boost 208 Grill 1 4 Page Vertical 2359 Overland Ave in Burley the 208 grill com xxx 1 4 Page Vertical ADVERTISE WITH US To learn more visit www southernidahokids com advertise 12 w w w s o u t h e r n i d a h o k i d s c o m

sponsored by HEALTH WELLNESS HEALTHYHABITS Situational Awareness During the Summer With summer approaching it is a great time to create situational awareness habits to protect your children as they play outdoors and interact with strangers Situational awareness means you are always aware of your surroundings and have your head on a swivel For example you re walking down the hallway at school you see a person with questionable behavior As they get closer you notice they do not have a visitor pass What do you do We encourage you to listen to your inner voice trust your instincts and report that person to staff immediately Another example your smoke detectors activate while you re asleep at home Having an escape plan and practicing that escape plan is a form of situational awareness A typical child abductor may use verbal ploys by directing or demanding the child to come to them engaging in conversation with a child or impersonating someone such as a trusted family friend medical professional or police officer They often offer food candy or drinks and ask children to help locate something often an animal A few opportunities to put Situational Awareness into practice this summer include 1 Trust your instincts If you see something say something Pay attention to your gut feelings or any suspicious behavior from individuals around your child If something feels off remove your child from the situation and report any concerns to the appropriate authorities 2 Teach stranger awareness Educate your child about the concept of strangers and the importance of not talking to or accepting anything without your permission It is important to teach children that an adult would never ask a child for help directions lost pet etc 3 Keep your head on a swivel and always be looking Keep your child within your line of sight when they are playing or moving around in public areas Avoid distractions like phone usage that may hinder your ability to monitor their activities 4 Always be prepared Have an escape plan for any situation Randy Hall Emergency Manager St Luke s Sponsored by 15 S u m m e r 2 0 2 4
