BRIDGE AMIDST THE ATL AIRPORT DISTRICT S BUSTLING ARTS SCENE WHITNEY AND MICAH STANSELL 97 ARE ILLUMINATING TO THE Arts HAPEVILLE IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE When they heard they had won the commission for the Hapeville pedestrian bridge art installation WHITNEY AND MICAH STANSELL 97 happened to be nearby having dinner with their kids It was a joyful moment one they celebrated by taking Ezra Ellsworth and Corabelle to climb the stairs to the bridge over the railroad tracks Back when he was a nervous sixth grader in his first year at Woodward Academy Micah might not have predicted that day would come or that his work as a filmmaker and installation artist would appear in cities as far flung as Beijing Vienna Toronto New York and L A Micah and Whitney who is his wife and collaborator work out of their home and studio just blocks away from Woodward in College Park The couple met and instantly became friends at Samford University where they were both on track scholarships and studying art From Samford Micah went to Georgia State to double major in journalism and fine arts while Whitney headed to the University of Georgia for a B F A in fiber arts She went on to study drawing and painting at SCAD Atlanta while he earned an M F A from Georgia State in filmmaking and the arts When Micah was in grad school the couple moved to College Park to be closer to Whitney s day job as an art teacher Meanwhile their careers as artists were gathering steam both as collaborators and individuals Whitney had her first solo gallery show during grad school at SCAD attracting the attention of collectors as well as her first review in Art in America Micah s interests in journalism and film converged in video installation I made a film that combined my family stories with a series of stories that Whitney was exploring through paintings at the same time That film won a regional student Academy Award and sort of confirmed that the direction I was moving in was the right direction My M F A thesis project Between You and Me eventually became our first big public video installation at Flux in 2010 It was really big covering the entire Norfolk Southern Building 10 With The Water and the Blood in 2012 Micah and Whitney combined a shared love of telling family stories with the more complex visual multi screen style they had been developing creating a multi channel installation that was projected onto the buildings of the High Museum of Atlanta For An Inversion with Sky created for Flux Night in 2013 they suspended 3 000 sheets of paper between two buildings and projected video of daytime skies onto them In 2013 they won the Tequila Herradura Barrel Art Collection competition which came with a 100 000 prize that allowed them to buy property next door to their home to convert into a studio When Hapeville announced a national call for proposals to transform the aging concrete pedestrian bridge over the railroad tracks that bisect Central Avenue the couple saw the perfect opportunity to create a work of public art that interjects itself into people s everyday lives They plan to install stainless steel mesh over the concrete structure of the bridge thousands of aluminum disks will be suspended to shift and twist in the breeze creating what Whitney and Micah describe as a giant kinetic sculpture that reacts to and reflects the environment Colored disks will spell out Hapeville as a welcome sign to the community and at night LED lights will transform the bridge with a mixture of time lapse videos of skies filmed from the bridge during the day At intervals the lights will display the actual constellations in the sky above When we read the call for the bridge project we knew we wanted to create something great for our community a destination and a place to gather and experience art says Whitney We love living in the Tri Cities area and have been really impressed with Hapeville s desire to foster and support creativity Micah adds that the community has informed their work up to now It has sort of become the visual backdrop for a lot of projects we have made and we ve enjoyed gathering stories from friends and neighbors who have lived here their entire lives Even beyond their work the area has produced a bustling art scene Among the many artistic developments in the neighborhood Whitney mentions East Point s WindMill Arts Center home to the dance organization Fly on A Wall which teaches presents and supports innovative dance and black box theater They also mention Hapeville Art Walks sponsored by Dashboard and the Arts Exchange in East Point which holds exhibitions poetry workshops and film screenings Looking ahead they both expect that young families and artists will continue to be drawn to the area I think good things are ahead More and more people are starting to discover the things about these neighborhoods that we have loved for so long For us it is especially exciting because there is a sense that the arts are becoming increasingly important for the area 1 2 3 Follow the Stansell s artwork on Instagram whitneystansell and micahstansell 4 LEFT RENDERING OF THE HAPEVILLE BRIDGE PROJECT 1 THE STANSELL FAMILY 2 OPEN BRIDGE AMIDST THE ATL AIRPORT DISTRICT S BUSTLING ARTS SCENE WHITNEY AND MICAH STANSELL 97 ARE ILLUMINATING TO THE Arts HAPEVILLE IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE When they heard they had won the commission for the Hapeville pedestrian bridge art installation WHITNEY AND MICAH STANSELL 97 happened to be nearby having dinner with their kids It was a joyful moment one they celebrated by taking Ezra Ellsworth and Corabelle to climb the stairs to the bridge over the railroad tracks Back when he was a nervous sixth grader in his first year at Woodward Academy Micah might not have predicted that day would come or that his work as a filmmaker and installation artist would appear in cities as far flung as Beijing Vienna Toronto New York and L A Micah and Whitney who is his wife and collaborator work out of their home and studio just blocks away from Woodward in College Park The couple met and instantly became friends at Samford University where they were both on track scholarships and studying art From Samford Micah went to Georgia State to double major in journalism and fine arts while Whitney headed to the University of Georgia for a B F A in fiber arts She went on to study drawing and painting at SCAD Atlanta while he earned an M F A from Georgia State in filmmaking and the arts When Micah was in grad school the couple moved to College Park to be closer to Whitney s day job as an art teacher Meanwhile their careers as artists were gathering steam both as collaborators and individuals Whitney had her first solo gallery show during grad school at SCAD attracting the attention of collectors as well as her first review in Art in America Micah s interests in journalism and film converged in video installation I made a film that combined my family stories with a series of stories that Whitney was exploring through paintings at the same time That film won a regional student Academy Award and sort of confirmed that the direction I was moving in was the right direction My M F A thesis project Between You and Me eventually became our first big public video installation at Flux in 2010 It was really big covering the entire Norfolk Southern Building 10 With The Water and the Blood in 2012 Micah and Whitney combined a shared love of telling family stories with the more complex visual multi screen style they had been developing creating a multi channel installation that was projected onto the buildings of the High Museum of Atlanta For An Inversion with Sky created for Flux Night in 2013 they suspended 3 000 sheets of paper between two buildings and projected video of daytime skies onto them In 2013 they won the Tequila Herradura Barrel Art Collection competition which came with a 100 000 prize that allowed them to buy property next door to their home to convert into a studio When Hapeville announced a national call for proposals to transform the aging concrete pedestrian bridge over the railroad tracks that bisect Central Avenue the couple saw the perfect opportunity to create a work of public art that interjects itself into people s everyday lives They plan to install stainless steel mesh over the concrete structure of the bridge thousands of aluminum disks will be suspended to shift and twist in the breeze creating what Whitney and Micah describe as a giant kinetic sculpture that reacts to and reflects the environment Colored disks will spell out Hapeville as a welcome sign to the community and at night LED lights will transform the bridge with a mixture of time lapse videos of skies filmed from the bridge during the day At intervals the lights will display the actual constellations in the sky above When we read the call for the bridge project we knew we wanted to create something great for our community a destination and a place to gather and experience art says Whitney We love living in the Tri Cities area and have been really impressed with Hapeville s desire to foster and support creativity Micah adds that the community has informed their work up to now It has sort of become the visual backdrop for a lot of projects we have made and we ve enjoyed gathering stories from friends and neighbors who have lived here their entire lives Even beyond their work the area has produced a bustling art scene Among the many artistic developments in the neighborhood Whitney mentions East Point s WindMill Arts Center home to the dance organization Fly on A Wall which teaches presents and supports innovative dance and black box theater They also mention Hapeville Art Walks sponsored by Dashboard and the Arts Exchange in East Point which holds exhibitions poetry workshops and film screenings Looking ahead they both expect that young families and artists will continue to be drawn to the area I think good things are ahead More and more people are starting to discover the things about these neighborhoods that we have loved for so long For us it is especially exciting because there is a sense that the arts are becoming increasingly important for the area 1 2 3 Follow the Stansell s artwork on Instagram whitneystansell and micahstansell 4 LEFT RENDERING OF THE HAPEVILLE BRIDGE PROJECT 1 THE STANSELL FAMILY 2 OPEN Would you College Park RELOCATE TO AB While Woodward draws families from 23 counties many families are choosing to live in and around College Park More and more families are making the move not just to be close to Main Campus but also because it s a thriving area with livable neighborhoods in close proximity to intown Atlanta The Clapes family lived near Newtown Park in Johns Creek for 20 years and sent their three children Becky 10 Spencer 13 and Carley 16 to Woodward North While Becky bussed to Main Campus for Middle and Upper School and drove her senior year when Spencer and Carley transitioned to Main Campus the Clapes decided to move to College Park In 2011 they moved to Rugby Avenue near Barrett Park right down the street from Woodward What s more they stayed These days Diane and Bill Clapes are still in College Park even though their three kids are long graduated With so many Woodward families making similar choices we decided to catch up with Diane to hear more about their decision and see the community through her eyes THE CLAPES FAMILY DIANE BILL BECKY 10 CARLEY 16 AND SPENCER 13 WOODWARD MAGAZINE When you decided to move to College Park were you nervous about the change Excited Both DIANE CLAPES Bill and I were both nervous and excited about the move We did have a couple of very close friends who already lived in College Park so we certainly were not pioneers After living in our home for 20 years it just seemed like the time to make a change a bit of an adventure There s very much a sense of community always neighbors to talk to if you are outside gardening or taking a walk In the summer people host porch parties every Friday that are open to all and in the fall we have a chili cookoff block party The Woman s Club also is a great way to meet people and get involved Not everyone who we re neighbors and friends with has a Woodward connection which is nice for a little bit of variation WM What s been your experience living here What s your neighborhood or local community like DC We couldn t be happier here The west side of Rugby Avenue is lovely First of all it is picturesque in an old fashioned way and we love that charm WM Is there anything unique about the neighborhood that you especially love DC We re much closer to intown Atlanta and of course to the airport We take advantage of the city so much more now and it s great going to the 12 WM Why did you decide to stay even after your children graduated DC We love our house and yard and being so close to the airport Plus we have so many friends here now we wouldn t want to start over again We re also excited that with the growth of the Aerotropolis and Westside BeltLine College Park will continue to grow OA AL RD L FIND OUT WHY FAMILIES LIKE THE CLAPES ARE MAKING THE MOVE FOR WOODWARD BUT STAYING FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD Fox Theatre an Atlanta United game or just grabbing dinner and we love Ponce City Market and the BeltLine As for the airport Bill travels a lot for work both my older kids flew to college and now that the kids are out of the house we re both traveling more for pleasure so being close to the airport is fantastic I have picked up or dropped off four times in the last four days and all the neighbors take each other back and forth if you send out a text you have a driver WM Would you recommend living in the area If so what would you say to a family that had trepidations about it DC We absolutely LOVE it here it really is such a nice community and if you have made the commitment to send your kids to WA and you re considering a move or able to make one why not go all in so that your family can fully take advantage of all that Woodward has to offer It s also really fun to get to know some of the teachers who live in the neighborhood We now consider them friends I remember the first week of school after we had moved Carley didn t have to get up until 7 30 a m to get to school on time She came home the first day and said something like This is sooo awesome why doesn t everyone live down here PLANNERS ARE TAKING A FRESH LOOK AT THE COLLEGE PARK MARTA STATION AND WE COULDN T BE HAPPIER ABOUT IT A study is underway to look at opportunities to enhance the MARTA College Park Transit Station which could mean big things for the Woodward community especially the 350 students who ride MARTA every day Enhancements to the station could include creating safer connections to the shops on Main Street and other nearby destinations better curbside management for shuttles carshare and other low speed mobility options as well as retail kiosks art installations landscaping expanded seating and new wayfinding The study was made possible through the support of the Atlanta Regional Commission the City of College Park and MARTA As for others involved project consultant Kimley Horn and the College Park Main Street Association are leading a robust public engagement program to ensure transit users and community voices inform the process each step of the way and a core team of local residents and community stakeholders including representatives from Woodward has been assembled to provide oversight Why now The MARTA College Park Transit Station is 30 years old says Will Herbig an urban designer and planner who is consulting on the project What was designed as a community station has grown to become a regional hub College Park is the second busiest station in the entire MARTA system and Downtown College Park is poised to leverage this momentum for redevelopment into a vibrant transit oriented activity center We ll have to wait and see what this will mean for Woodward but one can imagine MARTA being an incredible resource for us even beyond our daily riders Could a beautified and pedestrian friendly College Park station tip the scale for Woodward families and visitors who want to ditch the traffic for a quick safe and passive commute THE WOODWARD NEIGHBORHOOD 13

Class of 2019 REFLECTIONS THE CLASS OF 2019 HAS EXCELLED IN FAR MORE WAYS THAN WE CAN ENUMERATE in a magazine story but the following reflections from class leaders and administrators should give you a sense of their accomplishments and incredible spirit Beyond the outstanding numbers above this class has led our visual and performing arts programs earning praise and awards well beyond the gates of Woodward With 26 students going on to play college sports they ve also triumphed in athletics earning multiple region area and state championships as well as the respect of our competitors and a reputation for sportsmanship They ve soared to great heights in their cocurriculars winning awards championships and widespread praise in robotics debate publications and more While such huge wins for the Class of 2019 are no doubt impressive they re not what ultimately sets this class apart Many of the following comments mention this class outspokenness and I have to agree Their will to speak up for what they believe in has manifested itself in a sense of joy in our hallways and classrooms huge strides in their clubs and organizations and a broad commitment to service both inside and outside of Woodward Every community they touch is better for their ability to think critically voice their opinions tackle problems and make change and often with a sense of humor too At the same time in addition to their numerous accomplishments and accolades the Class of 2019 has embodied the virtue of gratitude by investing in their communities here at school and beyond These qualities perhaps more than any others prove the Class of 2019 is ready to thrive in their next step to college as well as in the world beyond Jonathan Merrill Upper School Principal THIS CLASS HAS A VIBRANT SAY YES TO ALL Coach Pete Fritts 83 about being selected as the 2018 Girls Golf Coach of the Year in the State of Georgia by the National Federation of State High School Associations winning a state title last year and his history at Woodward 25 Sultan Simms Kennesaw State University Track Field 26 Malcolm Wiley US Naval Academy Wrestling WOODWARD MAGAZINE So you started out as the wrestling coach Coach Fritts coached the team to a state wrestling title in 2013 and took on golf right around 1998 Pete Fritts I never played golf in high school but I grew up playing golf I played recreationally in college so when I got wind that they were starting the program in 1998 I decided I d put my name in to be the coach I really didn t know too much about competitive golf at that time so the girls and I were learning as we went along but we were pretty good right off the bat As the years went by I started to put my stamp on it and run it almost like I did the wrestling program WM What does that entail PF I have the type of philosophy that you can t work enough I mean we ll practice in rain the snow I really don t care how cold it is I don t like to lose time that we could be doing stuff and if we can t be outside we re inside going over situations on the board I would hate for somebody to graduate from one of my programs and say Well gosh we could ve been better if we had done more WM What do you see as the commonalities between those two sports golf and wrestling PF Both are individual sports but at our level you re on a team working to a common goal and that s really a mirror image of life You can t get anywhere on your own and if you think you can you re sorely mistaken I often tell both groups You know it s great if you win an individual tournament title or state championship But winning a team title is so much more enjoyable because years from now you get to celebrate with people and tell the stories As an individual it s great but who are you going to share that with The individual stuff I would trade all of that for team titles any day WM How does that translate to coaching the golf team now PF Nobody does it alone Even the girls that are not in the starting lineup we need them We ve got nine girls right now and if we get over the hump this year it s because nine girls did their job and helped us a lot not because four girls did it It just doesn t work like that And when you get the kids buying into your philosophy if it s the correct philosophy they can do things they didn t think they could do WM Where does earning national coach of the year for girls golf rank in the list of things that you ve accomplished PF I didn t even know Jose Fernandez came in and said Hey congratulations and I said For what and he said Well you re national coach of the year Who knew It s nice and I appreciate whoever nominated me or voted but at the end of the day it s not going to affect how I do my job with the girls If anything else we re just going to push harder because once you win these titles you want to win more It s harder than people think regardless of how talented you are because the mesh has to be there the chemistry has to be there WM How are things looking this year PF We won last year but this year s a whole different animal We try to do all we can to cover all the bases so that if we are not successful it s not because we weren t prepared We pride ourselves on working harder than anybody in the state Our girls have probably had 85 morning workouts lifting and running Nobody in the state probably nobody in the country at the high school level does that But I m trying to run it like a college program so they understand when they get there It helps strength it helps conditioning but struggling together in the mornings that s what it s all about So when the hard times come they know that we have that base that other people don t have WM What are you most proud of as a coach PF In the last two years our team grade point average has been well over 4 0 We miss class on Fridays occasionally as we have to We have to travel to many different venues So our girls have to be very organized What they miss they study on the bus They ve got the computers plugged in and they help each other As a coach you can t ask for more when you see a senior girl helping out a freshman with a paper They won t remember years from now the scores they shot on the golf course but they ll remember those bus rides and helping people out and the fun things they did together And that s what I m trying to create that chemistry that years from now they ll tell their kids and they ll tell their friends Well this is what we did and we were a good team but we had so much fun together At time of printing spring athletics were not complete For full spring sport
