The construction industry is facing a crisis. According to the CDC, the average suicide rate in the United States is12.93 per 100,000 people. In the construction industry, 53.3 out of every 100,000 workers commit suicide. Thismakes the suicide rate among construction workers more than four times the national average. By understandingthe essential aspects of mental well-being and establishing dedicated support systems, we can create anenvironment where individuals are better prepared to handle life's challenges.Fostering a workplace culture of health and safety includes prioritizing mental health. Mental healthencompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, affecting how we think, feel, and act. Itinfluences our capacity to handle stress, connect with others, and make decisions. Good mental health enablesus to manage stress more effectively and build resilience against life's challenges. It is crucial for managers andcoworkers to be prepared to recognize and respond to changes in a colleague’s behavior and to offerassistance where they can.By raising awareness, providing access to resources, and fostering supportive cultures, the construction industrycan significantly enhance the mental health of its workforce. Ensuring the well-being of construction workers isnot only a moral obligation but also crucial for the sustained success and productivity of the industry. If you or a loved one is in crisis, please know there is help available. (Suicide Prevention and CrisisSupport can be reached by dialing 988.) Maybe you are not in crisis, but you or one of your dependentswant to talk to someone. Norwood’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) through MetLife is a greatplace to have that first conversation. Employees and their dependents have access to 5 free phone orvideo consultations with licensed counselors per issue, per calendar year. Please consider reaching outto MetLife’s TELUS Health EAP 24/7 line at 888-319-7819 or online via one.telushealth.com (username:metlifeeap password: eap).SAFETYWhat song would you sing at karaoke?NOOOOO! “Brokedown Palace”by The Grateful Dead.“I’m Still Standing” byElton John.“Jerusalema” byMaster KG.“Hotel California” byThe EaglesAbsolutely not, but also“What’s Up?” by 4 NonBlondes Mary SypherRichard PaganoAlicia KeenanRaymond MutebiBrian HofmannTheresa KouryIt would only be “Turn thePage (Live)” by Bob Seger& The Silver Bullet Band.Tom Mellon“Friends in Low Places”by Garth Brooks.Wil Ferry
