We should express our loveto others by helping themand by sharingwhat we have with them.

While David and his grandfather were out collecting pears, David’s sister, Ruth, went with their grandmother to a small store near the farm.

Page 7

“Grandma, what are you going to buy at the store today?” Ruth asked, while they were on their way.

Page 8

“Well, I want to make a cake that I think you and David will really like. We have eggs and milk at the farm, but we still need some fine flour and some vanilla,” she replied.

Page 9

The thought of making a cake with Grandma made Ruth smile.

Since it didn’tsound likeDavid,Ruth looked outAs Ruth was watching, she suddenly heardthe voice of another child through the open window. When they got back home, Grandma began to put allthe ingredients on the kitchen table.

Page 11

Since it didn’tsound likeDavid,Ruth looked outto see who it could be.

Page 12

“Grandma, look at that little boy in the neighbor’s yard. Is he… um, well… babysitting the sheep, Grandma?”

Page 13

Grandmacame overand lookedout of the window. Then, she replied with a little laugh, “Well, yes, Ruth, I guess you could say he’s babysitting the sheep.

Page 14

That little boy is a shepherd. He’s taking good care of the sheepby leading them to eatthe long, soft grass in the meadow.See the two big ones with that little one?

Page 15

The bigger sheep could easily eat the grass before the smaller one, but they aren’t.

Page 16

Instead of being selfish, they are helping that little sheep get right in there with them to eat as well. Cute, isn’t he?”

Page 17

“Ahhh!” exclaimed Ruthin amazement. “That’s nice!”

Page 18

When the cake was finally finished,Ruth remembered those sheep sharing grassin the meadow and asked her grandmotherif she could save a corner piece of the cakefor her brother, David. She knew he really liked the corner pieces.

Page 19

“Well, you surely can, Ruth,” Grandma answered.“And you know what? I think I’d like to savea corner for Grandpa as well! After all, where do you think David learned to like those corner pieces?”That made Ruth laugh.

Page 20

Just then, they saw David and Grandpa coming up the walkwayto the farmhouse.

Page 21

Ruthran outto meet themand gave them botha great big hug.

Page 22

When she looked in David’s basket, she said, “Oh, look at the size of that giant pear! And it looks perfectly ripe! I’m guessing it will be wonderfully juicy. You are really going to enjoy eating that, David!”

Page 23

David smiled happilyat his sister and answered,“Only a pig would eatthis whole pear himself. It’s big enoughfor all four of us!You can divide itand give everyonea piece.”Then he handedthe great big pearto Ruth.

Page 24

When David saw how excited Ruth was, he couldn’t help but beam with happiness himself.

Page 25

When they entered the farmhouse,Grandpa stopped, sniffed around a little bit, then asked happily,“Ruth, have you and Grandmabeen baking while we were away?Something smells delicious!”

Page 26

Ruth answered excitedly,“We did, Grandpa!We made a delicious… ”

Page 27

Grandma interrupted,“Yes, we did bake a little something for all of us. But I’m afraid you’ll just have to waituntil after lunch to see what it is.”

Page 28

“Oh, well, I don’t mind that at all,” Grandpa said with the twinkle in his eye that he always gets when he’s about to make a playful little joke.

Page 29

“I can wait for hours to SEE it,as long as I can EAT it right now!Go ahead – put a blindfold on meand serve me up a big piece right quick!”Then, he scrunched his eyes shutand opened his mouth wide.

Page 30

“No, no, no! Grandma answered. All the seeing AND the eating of what we baked will have to wait until after lunch.”And they all laughed together.
