St Joseph s Boys School Achievement for All STAFF INDUCTION POLICY Rationale In order to establish an ethos of aspiration and high achievement school leaders should demonstrate a commitment providing professional development opportunities for staff particularly teachers and promote a readiness to share and learn from best practice Every school A Good School 2009 General Policy As identified in our staff development policy 2 1 It is the policy of the school to seek to provide all its staff teaching and non teaching at whatever level with the training necessary to enable them to perform their duties most effectively and improve learning for all pupils In addition the school seeks to provide all staff with opportunities to learn further skills which may help in the achievement of personal and career development goals of all school employees The school seeks to enable newly appointed promoted staff to develop their new roles and responsibilities effectively by Ensuring they have access to a support training and professional development induction programme Establishing an individualised programme of monitoring and support 2 2 The school seeks to enable NQTs to quickly develop into more confident and effective teachers by 2 3 ensuring NQTs have access to and participate in a high status professional development programme which operates in an atmosphere of trust and support establishing an individualised programme of monitoring and support supporting NQTs in becoming more confident fluent productive responsible collaborative or expert i e taking on more complex and more challenging problems In pursuance of this policy it is the school s intention a To link with the priorities of the SDP b To encourage staff to identify personal departmental and organisational training and development needs

c To provide the resources to meet these needs internally and externally where possible d To use the SMT induction PRSD and other team individual requests where they support the SDP priorities to inform training needs Entitlement to Training 3 1 New staff in St Joseph s Boys school are entitled to an induction process 3 2 Newly Qualified Teachers NQT s and Early professional development Teachers EPD s should expect guidance and support from a designated member of SMT 3 3 Where a staff member teaching or non teaching has acquired new or additional duties requiring the development of further skills staff should expect to be given training in those skills 3 4 It is the school s expectation that a member of staff will perform his her duties up to the best of his her capabilities Where training is required to support the practice of new and or additional duties within the resources made available by the school WELB DENI the SMT will endeavour to support and or provide training to enable staff members to carry out their duties most effectively 3 4 This policy applies to all staff teaching and non teaching Roles and Responsibilities 4 1 It is the responsibility of the individual member of staff to attend meetings convened to support the performance of his her duties under review and attend training to support new and or additional roles 4 2 Completion of Files assignments will be necessary in the case of NQT s EPD s in accordance with the terms of Practice by DENI Induction of newly appointed teachers will be under supervision of designated member of SMT All other staff teaching and non teaching who have been newly promoted will be supervised by SMT Member for Staff Development During the course of induction they will be linked with a member of staff in their management area for support A short evaluative report on progress at the end of the first year to highlight any concerns will complete the induction procedures 4 3 Newly appointed Heads of Departments Heads of Year Co ordinators Heads of School should keep the needs of their management areas under review identifying areas for reassessment or change and advise the needs or appropriate staff training in this area after the period of formal induction has passed 4 4 The Senior Teachers with responsibility for Staff Induction Development will provide a staff induction Action Plan for any given academic year 4 5 The SMT will have overall responsibility for staff induction to build on the professional development of all staff to enable them to undertake their new roles with confidence and support SMT will take measures to identify training needs when staff acquires management or other promotional points and for revised curriculum

demands Outcomes of PRSD Training can be addressed through provision of formal training or shared practice 4 6 It is responsibility of the Senior Leadership of the school to respond to staff induction and to seek to meet such requests within the constraints of the budget and in line with the School Development Plan 4 7 Staff induction requires evaluation All members of staff should keep a record of their training as identified in 4 2 and a copy should be given to SMT members with responsibility for staff induction 4 8 Opportunities should be created to provide support as in 4 2 and to determine the extent to which this is useful Where staff induction is considered unsuccessful this should be addressed by SMT 4 8 It is the function of Senior Management to support and foster individual induction needs identified within the school In so doing it seeks to move towards the achievement of the full potential of all individuals whatever their role as members of St Joseph s staff Staff Induction can be achieved by 5 1 INSET training Internal external Individuals may learn through working with others in coaching mentoring or supported role Staff sharing disseminating good practice Developmental programmes leading to career opportunities formal qualifications Observation Organisation 6 1 The school has appointed a Senior Teacher with special responsibility for the coordination of staff training and development provision within the school A separate member of SMT in liaison with CASS ensures that Newly Qualified Teacher s meet the requirements of DENI for qualified status 6 2 The Senior Management Team acts as organiser promoter and information centre liaising with other staff members within their various capacities wherever possible to support new staff and newly appointed staff members 6 3 The Senior Management Team is the official body charged with the promotion of induction training across the school Those undertaking induction regularly report to SMT on training and development activities 6 4 The Senior Management Team will ensure that the requirements of DENI and CEA are met on INSET days They will ensure the opportunities for CASS training for NQT s and EPD s are met The SMT will avail of other bodies and external agencies where necessary especially in the provision of induction for non teaching staff Procedures

7 1 Use of application for courses attached sheet App 2 7 2 Approval of training will go through SMT with final approval from the principal 7 3 Work should be left for classes when absent on INSET 7 4 An evaluation sheet should be completed on return and given to SMT for consideration of further or internal dissemination of knowledge and practice 7 5 Regular review meetings to ensure all staff induction needs are met Policy Review 8 1 This policy has been determined by Board of Governors which body may approve revisions from time to time 8 2 This policy was agreed on________________________ It will take effect from___________________________ and will be reviewed three years hence
