St Joseph s Boys School Achievement for All NUTRITION POLICY Introduction 1 1 What we eat and how often we eat is important to our health The food we eat affects our health In Northern Ireland dietary related diseases account for a considerable proportion of deaths due to ill health 1 2 Coronary heart disease is the major cause of death in the province and accounts for 4 000 deaths each year Cancer is the second major cause and accounts for 3 000 deaths Aims 2 1 To create an awareness among our school community and in particular the pupils that there is a direct link between eating patterns and health Through planned structured approach we aim to change the eating patterns of our pupils The school actively supports healthy eating throughout the school day Objectives 3 1 Increase awareness and understanding of the dietary risk factors and identify main dietary related diseases 3 2 Enable those who want to make dietary changes to do so 3 3 Create an environment to make changes easier for example through increased availability accessibility and affordability of healthy foods 3 4 Encourage continued participation in the Healthy Break campaign and nutritional cookery programmes offered in the school either in class or as extra curricular programmes 3 5 Consult professional agencies to assist in the promotion of healthy eating 3 6 Encourage parents to provide only healthy choices in lunch boxes 3 7 Liaise with canteen manager on providing a range of healthy food and adhere to any nutritional guidelines issued by relevant bodies

3 8 Encourage pupils to take advantage of school breakfast club Reinforce the message that breakfast is the most important meal of the day 3 9 Encourage pupils to drink water as opposed to fizzy drinks 3 10 Consult with PTA on how to engage the wider parent community in promoting healthy eating 3 11 Ensure a formal curriculum is consistently reviewed to include information relating to food and nutrition in different learning areas e g home economics science and is consistent and up to date 3 12 Participation in Health Promoting Schools Award 3 13 Pupils who need support or advice regarding eating disorders will have access to relevant staff and be provided with information of relevant professional agencies Monitoring and Reviewing 4 1 The policy will be monitored by Mr Paul Gibbons Health Education Co ordinator in line with Whole School Review Policy on a biannual basis Various methods of monitoring and evaluation will be accessed Formal School monitoring procedures Relevant data from Breakfast Club access via Extended Schools Coordinator and monitoring documents Parent pupil survey via School Council PTA survey Feedback Accreditation from Health Promoting Schools Award This policy document is produced in consultation with entire school community including staff pupils parents Board of Govenors and Catering supervisor SMT PRINCIPAL ___________________________ BOG Chairman ___________________________
