KEEPING PHYSICIANS ABREAST OF THE LATEST NEWS AND INFORMATION AT DIGNITY HEALTH – ST. JOHN’S HOSPITALSSEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2022Medical DialogueMSQC Update for the Medical StaffThe Medical Sta Quality Committee (MSQC) continues to review cases on a monthly basis. As of the end of August, 31 cases have been reviewed. The committee has noted that communication between Nursing Sta and Medical Sta remains a frequent challenge. Of particular concern is the need for the Nursing Sta to leave a voice message when a call goes to voicemail. We have reached out to Nursing Leadership to remind the Nursing Sta to leave a message if a call back is expected. Also, remember to download the TigerConnect App, which is a HIPAA compliant method for text communication. As a reminder, the MSQC Committee is made up of physicians from all specialties. As the Committee Chair, it is my goal to review a case, determine what happened, what can be learned from the case, and what can be done to prevent a similar event from recurring. It is not the goal of the Committee to see who did what wrong and apply blame. It is the Committee’s underlying premise that nobody sets out to make a bad choice. The Committee recognizes that many factors lead to an event and we take that into consideration.Pearls of Wisdom from Recent MSQC Cases1. Make a concerted eort to personally speak with other doctors involved in a case. Care coordination ensures good care and facilitates a timely discharge.2. Remember to consider alternative explanations for a patient’s presenting complaint–particularly when diagnostic imaging does not reveal pathology. Keep looking for an explanation.SJRMC Recognized with Largest Business of the Year AwardDignity Health – St. John’s Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) has received the Largest Business of the Year award at the 72nd Annual Oxnard Community and Business Awards. St. John’s Heart Team First in Tri-County Area to Implant Aveir™ VR Leadless PacemakerThe heart team at St. John’s Regional Medical Center doesn’t skip a beat when it comes to innovation in cardiac care. We are thrilled to share that the St. John’s heart team, led by Dr. Ali Sovari, is the rst in the Tri-County area to implant Abbott’s FDA-approved Aveir™ VR leadless pacemaker system for treating certain abnormal heart rhythms. The Aveir VR leadless pacemaker is the world’s only leadless pacemaker designed to be retrieved – or removed – when it has to be replaced. Like other leadless pacemakers, Aveir VR does not require an incision in the chest to implant the device or insulated wires – known as cardiac leads – that deliver electrical energy to the heart. Rather, this leadless pacemaker is implanted during a minimally invasive procedure via an ergonomic catheter that is inserted into the femoral vein through a very small incision in the groin. This is a great option for patients who need a pacemaker, but where physicians are concerned about more invasive surgery. We are excited to oer this new pacemaker to make the implantation and retrieval processes as seamless as possible for physicians and patients. Healing Hands AwardEvery quarter, we present deserving physicians who go above and beyond with the Healing Hands Award. Join us in congratulating the following physicians.Dominic D. He takes time with the nursing sta as well as his patients and their families to make sure all of their questions are answered and they are comfortable with their course of treatment. He is an excellent addition to the team!”Natalie Daoud, MD, Internal Medicine, SJRMC – Her nomination reads in part, “Dr. Daoud has been a valuable member of the Sound Physician’s group for many years. She participates in “It Takes 2” rounding, by reaching out to the nurses while rounding and addressing any concerns. She utilizes a team approach by connecting with everyone involved in a patient’s care, including the Case Managers and Social workers to ensure that the patient has everything they need to thrive both in the hospital and after discharge. Her bedside manner has a calm and professional approach and she includes family whenever possible.”3 St. John’s Medical Dialogue
