Joseph Barbera

Animator of The Flintstones, The Jetsons, and Tom and Jerry.

By Conner S.

Joseph Barbera is the animator of many different animated television shows, such as The Flintstones and Tom and Jerry. I chose him for my project because he made Tom and Jerry, with William Hanna, and Tom and Jerry being my favorite animated TV show, I wanted to choose him. He co-founded his company with William Hanna, calling it "Barbera-Hanna" and made multiple shows under this company.

Joseph Barbera was born in March 24, 1911. He found a job at MGM enterprises in 1936, and two years lates he joined forces with William Hanna, and then made their first ever animation together in 1940. It was named Puss Gets the Boot, and was the predecessor of Tom and Jerry. They eventually took control of MGM's animation division in 1955, due to their animating skills, until it got closed down in 1957. After that, they made H-B Enterprises, which grew to be Hanna-Barbera as of today. Hanna-Barbera was originally owned by Taft Broadcasting, but then they sold it to Turner Broadcasting in 1991. They earned many Emmys and Academy nominations, before William Hanna died in 2001. However, Barbera kept on animating, until his own death in 2006. He died of natural causes at his home in Studio Hills, California. He was 95 years old.

His productions include The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Jonny Quest, Scooby-Doo, and Tom and Jerry.
