Free Supports and Services for Schools and Families There are many ways in which Offaly Libraries can support your school community Free library membership for everyone This entitles students families and teachers to avail of our facilities free of charge We are very happy to welcome everyone whether it s for research class visits or a planned event like an author visit or a workshop Requests It is now free to request a book from any public library in Ireland There are over 12 million items to choose from Teacher card This card entitles teachers to borrow up to 30 books at a time The lending period is 3 months Class visits If you wish to bring a class to the library please get in touch with your local library The class can then borrow books and get to know the library Reading resources and supports Offaly Libraries has an extensive collection of material both print and online suitable for all reading stages We have an array of non fiction books to help with project work and study Programming and events Offaly Libraries provide ongoing library programmes throughout the year to encourage and support the curious minds of our younger community members No more fines There are no longer any fines for overdue items Page 1

Space Week 4th 8th October Let s Draw Women in Space with Deirdre Kelleghan Suitable for 5th 6th Class This workshop includes a presentation on the past present and future of women in space Deirdre will discuss the contribution of ESA and NASA female astronauts to space exploration and more She will explain the forthcoming NASA ARTEMIS program and its plan to land a woman and a man on the moon by 2024 thereby setting alight a new era in space exploration Did you know Monday 4th October 10 00am Monday 4th October 11 30am It takes 8 minutes 19 seconds for light to travel from the Sun to the Earth Kite Workshop with Go Fly Your Kite Suitable for 3rd 6th Class Limited to 30 participants only This workshop will look at space travel and the Lunar landing in July 1969 and the science flight and luck that made the expedition a success The Apollo 11 mission and the Saturn 5 spacecraft that changed space travel forever will be covered Video clips will be shown of the mission and there will be a discussion of why aeronautics were so important to the success of this mission Each child will design their own spacethemed kite Tuesday 5th October 9 30am Tuesday 5th October 12 30pm Page 4

Maths Week 16th 24th October CSI Michaela Maths with As Creatives Did you know Zero is not represented in Roman numerals Suitable for 4th Class If it hadn t been for the quick thinking of one of her teammates Michaela Maths one of Britain s most promising young athletes would be dead slain by an unseen hand The police are baffled by the dastardly deed and want the children s help in solving it Having been introduced to the crime the suspects and their possible motives pupils will work in teams on a carousel probing a range of mathematical skills Taken together these lead to the suspects being eliminated one by one until if all the calculations are correct the criminal is unmasked Tuesday 19th October 10 45am Tuesday 19th October 2 00pm CSI Bake Off with As Creatives Suitable for 6th Class All is not well in the world of the Bake Off one of the judges Saul Pinewood has had food poisoning and he knows it wasn t an accident He s narrowed the field down to six suspects and hopes that pupils can use their understanding of fractions percentages and measurements to help him take the final step Tuesday 19th October 9 15am Tuesday 19th October 12 00pm Page 6

Importance of STEAM STEAM education is an approach to teaching and learning that integrates Science Technology Engineering the Arts and Maths By engaging with STEAM exploration young children develop curiosity inquisitiveness critical thinking and problemsolving capacities which are built on through their primary and post primary school experience STEAM subjects are at the heart of a wide variety of professions and these are the skills that children need today to take part in the building of their future This programme will provide an opportunity to explore STEAM learning beyond the classroom The jobs of tomorrow will be STEAM focused so introducing these subjects in a fun and creative way will remove the stigma and will let children in Offaly see the relevance that these subjects can have in real life It is important that children realise that STEAM subjects are constantly evolving with new discoveries and that hundreds of years of creativity and outside the box thinking have shaped the world of today Our 2022 STEAM offering will be launched in the coming weeks Keep an eye out for more exciting and fun learning opportunities Offaly County Council is helping to shape Offaly s Smart Future with Primary and Post Primary School children through STEM using VEX Robotics Offaly County Council is innovating and transforming through a range of business community and educational initiatives and the VEX Robotics Competition is just one of these initiatives Keep an eye out for future VEX Robotics competitions Page 10
