PRESIDENT S REPORT Board of Directors PRESIDENT S MESSAGE John Sliskovic John T Sliskovic ca ey com It is a good feeling to be writing a message for the spring edition of Club Life It means we are not far away from returning to golf and tennis the debut of pickleball and seeing more of our fellow Members at the Club Your Board has been focused on reviewing our strategic initiatives following our planning sessions held in the fall and input from the Member Survey Our strategic pillars remain to optimize Member experience enhance our facilities sustain a healthy membership ensure effective fiscal management enhance governance and improve brand awareness and communications From one year to the next additional emphasis is placed on one or more of the pillars but Member experience in all facets of our operations remains the most important This coming year the enhancement of our facilities will be a key area with the shading of the Terrace to be complete in the spring and the significant golf course refurbishment project to start August 1st We continue to consider enhancements to the Glenmore kitchen the Oxford Room and a renovation to the Glenmore Grill Room restaurant bar area and expect to provide more information on these in April From previous messages you will know our membership and financial position are in excellent shape and our branding and communications have received great reviews in the membership survey There are always some tweaks to look at with governance and there have been some legislative changes for all non profit organizations that we will address The Member Survey saw 678 responses which was slightly lower than in 2020 but still statistically significant Overall our Members reported positive levels of satisfaction with the core areas of Member experience All key satisfaction indicators are within or outperforming comparable club benchmark ranges With 90 of our Members who responded indicating the Club is meeting expectations on an overall basis it puts us at the 4 high end of the benchmark range and is a slight improvement from 2020 The survey also pointed out areas where the Club should improve and your Board and management are working on strategies and tactics to make these improvements The Nominating Committee has completed its mandate under Lynne Leitch s leadership and the committee has 3 nominees for the Board as well as 18 new additions to our standing committees ready for the membership vote at the annual meeting In all there are over 103 members who are actively volunteering their time on the various standing and ad hoc committees of the Club An impressive point to note is that every Member nominated to serve was willing to accept the nomination We will be firming up a date for our AGM in late April or early to mid May This is my fourth and last President s Message in Club Life and the Covid pandemic has now been a topic in all four of my messages as it was for Lynne in her year as president Not long after penning the message for the winter edition the Omicron variant arrived and we were back to reduced capacity limits gathering sizes and other restrictions Omicron ultimately resulted in the Club having to close in person dining fitness and winter golf through February 2 You can imagine the challenges this has posed for our management team At the time of writing the Province has relaxed some of the restrictions which has allowed our food and beverage operation to return to full capacity and the re opening of in person fitness and winter golf We remain hopeful the favourable developments will continue and the Club will be able to operate in some type of new normal with no steps backward Given all we have been through we definitely deserve an early spring S PS RP IRNI NG G220022 02
COO REPORT SPRING REPORT Jon Nusink GM COO jnusink londonhuntclub com Unless you were fortunate to situate yourself south the rest of us have enjoyed a mostly typical Southern Ontario winter with a classic mix of extremes in weather For parts of the world like home spring is when the short dark days of winter give way to warming temperatures and greener outdoor spaces If spring is your favourite season then you might crave new experiences and the possibilities of the future The spring season offers the chance of renewal and growth which you need after a long cold winter This spring feels more like renewal and fresh starts than most We are all hopeful that we have experienced our final lockdown due to covid after enduring the ups downs and pivots of constantly changing legislation and guidelines With the March sunshine comes the loosening of restrictions and the promise for returns to the old pre covid normal Thank you to all Members who provided feedback to me or the Board as we navigate through the implementation and removal of club policies some mandated and some in the best interest of the health and wellness of our diverse Membership and staff At the time of printing our vaccination policies for both Members and staff remain in place to be revised periodically The spring prompts a renewal of our Board and our various committees Thank you to all who are retiring at the ends of their terms and to all who have volunteered to pick up on the successes of their fellow Members I find our Club s committee structure with its 100 volunteers really bring together the Club community to a common goal of excellence and constant improvement What some might refer to as time wasting bureaucracy I see as an enriching experience to work with so many talented members and staff The Committee and Board cycle will reset as of the Annual General Meeting set for Monday May 2nd At this meeting it is the hope of the Board to put forward a motion for Shareholders to approve a renovation to our member dining areas The dining rooms as you know it today with exception of the Oxford Room were originally constructed in the Clubhouse Project in 1989 90 Other than changing the original whitewashed green walls to the current wood panelling about 18 years ago the removal of the wall between the Glenmore Room and old Card Room some new carpet and paint refreshes over the years it hasn t undergone anything extensive and is in desperate need of an update Both in terms of modernization flow of traffic and new furniture The Clubhouse Committee initiated this project in early 2018 and had settled on conceptual plans for the Grill and Glenmore Room only to have them shelved in early 2020 due to the uncertainty of the pandemic However in the last year it was brought forth once again by the Board in an effort to continually renew and invest in our capital infrastructure and Member experience The original concept taken to the Board which is still in play today involves the reconstruction of the bar in what is now the Terrace Lounge It will be an island bar that Members can sit around with views of the golf course and a new triple door system leading to the Terrace that can be left fully opened on good weather days to bring the bar area more into the Terrace area The wall separating the Terrace Lounge and the Grill Room will be removed and the full area will be updated and set up as a casual dining area Great for after golf or a fun night out with friends and family A new wall will be erected to separate this area from the Glenmore Room which will receive a welcomed upgrade in both d cor and furniture solidifying this as the fine dining destination of the Club It will be more secluded than what we are familiar with which will enhance enjoyment while celebrating special events or having a classier night out 5 SPRING 2022
COO REPORT We also acquired a consultant s opinion on the set up of the kitchen which we have known to be inept at best for our current set up This will result in a much needed modernization of the kitchen and the equipment to better handle our volumes and assist in providing the consistency and high quality that our members demand and deserve Although this smaller project will happen concurrently it will be done as a separate capital project since it needs to be done regardless of moving ahead with the new restaurants or not Lastly since these plans have been reignited a concept change for the Oxford Room will reshape this area into more of a caf style The island booths will be relocated to the windows overlooking the first tee and a mix of tables and casual settings will fill the space in addition to a quick service counter that will feature specialty coffee freshly made sandwiches and baked goods as well as beverages Think trendy caf this counter will be great for casual breakfast or lunch serve as a pickup point for our increasing take out business and quick and easy access from the first tee for that last minute meal on the run or can of beer I can see Members enjoying a caf latte while clearing off emails on their laptop while others enjoy a smoothie after a workout in the gym Final details and budgets are currently being developed and I will be very excited to begin communicating these proposals to the Membership with a target date of April 1st This is a great example of looking ahead to the future with capital improvements and renewal in the Club for the enjoyment of all Members The pre emptive feature to all this improvement in food and beverage is the Terrace Shading Project which is currently underway While it was our hope to have this up and ready by the end of March like everyone else we are facing supply chain issues and a few of the components have been delayed Our partners in this project remain confident that we should be back and using this area by the end of April pending any more setbacks As we inch towards the beginning of the golf course project it has been a very busy winter tying up loose ends and taking care of various preparations The truth is while we don t have heavy equipment on site yet the work has already begun with continuation of our tree preservation project removing declining trees that are at the end of their life cycle or impede on the health of the turf or other healthier trees around them Preparatory work is being done in the wooded areas to begin the installation of main irrigation lines Working closely with our irrigation consultant and General Contractor we have already purchased the lions share of piping irrigation components and bunker sand in an attempt to time the market through its volatility and secure the best pricing we can This in itself has presented an immense challenge that wasn t contemplated when this project began years ago with rare inflationary and supply chain issues now a reality All of this was highlighted in a recent communication by Committee Chair Doug Mackenzie where his committee s suggestion to defer phase 2 the regrassing of the greens in order to absorb the unexpected costs and maintain the shareholder approved budget while completing the original project to its full integrity was explained We are lucky to have such a dedicated Member at the helm backed by such skilled committee Members Any construction causing disruption remains on time to start after the August long weekend Just another example of a long awaited and welcome renewal As President John Sliskovic mentions in his address the Club is in a very good financial position and has weathered the covid storm well One indicator of Club health is the new Member pool which consistently has us on our toes At this time there are over 50 families currently on the waitlist which could translate into a two to three year wait for anyone being approved for Membership now While this has kept us busy and presents its own challenges we are happy to answer the demand and welcome new families to enrich our Club Community Recently the following families were welcomed to the Veranda Category from our waitlist In case this term sounds strange to you the Veranda is the top 12 families on the waitlist who are granted privileges to the Club with limited access to golf It s essentially the on deck circle until a spot is available Please help me in welcoming Chris and Diana Yuen with their children Vanessa and Michael Chris is District Vice President with RBC Global Asset Management and Diana is Senior Recruitment Advisor with BMO They were proposed by Chris Paterson and seconded by Angie Tai 6 SPRING 2022

GOLF REPORT 13 SPRING 2022
GOLF REPORT a SHIFT in the Game Chris Lawson Director of Golf clawson londonhuntclub com instagram com londonhuntclub_proshop The game of golf and golf courses continue to provide a record number of Canadians refuge during the COVID 19 pandemic as a proven safe activity that benefits both physical and mental health Even with an abundance of safety precautions in place for the better part of the past two seasons including no ball washers Clubhouse closures and no rakes in sand traps golf has been one of the sports best positioned to weather the COVID 19 pandemic while abiding to social distancing practices With less competition against other outdoor activities the pandemic has provided golf with an opportunity to grow in a way we haven t seen in over 20 years When discussing the surge of popularity within the game the debate carries on whether the golf industry s increased demand during the pandemic will continue on for a third season Insiders from the USGA and peers from Clubs in the southern regions of the U S indicate golf is still booming The industry has a substantial captive audience once again despite not maintaining the same level experienced in 2020 This rising interest may also translate to increased television audiences and ratings Golf has experienced increased viewership during the pandemic as many new golfers may be looking to view events online or on television to better understand the game Along with a greater social media presence this provides golf with another opportunity to expand its base in particular to younger generations Around one third of all golfers in Canada and the U S are now millennials which could come as a shock to the golfing community at large Younger touring professional stars such as Nelly Korda or Collin Morikawa help to prove the stereotype wrong that golf is a sport only for an older demographic In 2021 over 15 5 14 million millennials in Canada and the U S indicated that they would be interested in playing the game of golf regularly Tiger alone moved the needle back in 1996 and now we have several female and male tour professionals helping younger players become interested in the game Another positive noteworthy demographic shift is the increasing interest in golf from women In 2019 women made up about a quarter of all golfers Now recent surveys from Golf Canada and the USGA show that women s presence in golf has grown in the key beginners category aged 18 to 39 as well as in the junior girls segment of golfers This bodes well for the future of golf and the vision to continue the movement of being an inclusive sport enjoyed by all As we approach our 2022 season we want to focus on the positives that have come from the pandemic but we must not overlook the ongoing challenges we still face The golf industry has not escaped supply chain setbacks or product shortages Our team continues to stay on top of any issues that arise throughout the supply chain We are happy to say that most of our vendors are very optimistic and confident that deliveries will be more timely and the lines of communication have drastically improved for us to view daily updates throughout the order process Although we as golfers are a diverse breed we all share one trait we are optimists at heart Always clinging to the promise that something better is just around the corner or on the next hole Be it a pure drive sinking a long putt or a bounce back birdie after a poor hole With two COVID 19 interrupted seasons behind us we are optimistic and excited for the season that lies ahead The game of golf is in a good place at the Club and we look forward to seeing each of you on the first tee or practice range very soon SPRING 2022

GROUNDS REPORT large workforce of four plus the owner s retired father Murray an ex farmer who functioned as the head fixer upper welder and all around patriarch of what must have seemed to him to be a teenage summer camp My brother one morning at the age of sixteen was operating an Alice Chalmers front end loader tractor He soon discovered hydraulics do not appreciate sudden loads when a full bucket of wet sand dropped too quickly The valve lever released hydraulic fluid burst everywhere it was a learning opportunity for all present in the yard that morning Murray calmly arrived on scene to let us know it was okay and he would fix it Those few summers on the course were special we thrived on the physical nature of the job as everything was done by hand Topdressing greens with individual swipes of the shovel we would hand throw curtains of sand across the greens during play a little heavy at times before the owner superintendent brushed our artwork with a steel matt A friendly wave to the regular players and a mandatory two putt would set things straight My boss Kevin was a young owner superintendent He grew up on a farm and decided to build his own golf course with another industrialist grass grower They have since become one of the largest family run operations in the Durham region with over six golf courses amongst them Business shrewd cash was king we earned a market value 3 50 per hour in 1987 Pocket money in high school was just that on occasion Kevin would ask us if we were interested in earning extra money by swimming for golf balls We were always up for a challenge boots off beside the first fairway pond and all four of us would jump in The passing golfers were not all amused but an errant ball soon retrieved would settle the mood Dark muddy water silt filled we closed our eyes held our breath and dove down into the murky bottom one ball two ball three ball It was a competition to see who would find the most Kevin paid us 25 cents per ball that day It was not until later we saw a sign below the Clubhouse snack bar counter Refurbished Next to New Golf Balls 75 cents We learnt a good business lesson that day but it was worth it We did the work gladly and were happy to be physically exhausted amongst brothers and friends to go home hungry then out to the gym only to come back early the next morning to that summer oasis to do it all over again One promotion I remember was being trusted with the manual night watering of the golf course I had thought I had arrived although having no idea why I was watering or how to water it soon appealed to my senses The first evening after training I arrived at dusk 16 Walking down to the farm shed I loaded my 3 wheel EZ Go cart with manual Buckner impact sprinklers a flash light and a bucket Cell phones did not exist as the dark set in and I could only hope my parents would be back at midnight to pick me up The bucket was key to success as the pumphouse was located a precarious stroll from the small creek It required patience as the old centrifugal pump required a deft touch to prime and catch before roaring off to a whirl of power Usually it required 3 or 4 round trips over rocks and brush before the pull of water occurred It was a relief as the summer watering was on my watch and the owner operator was expecting a certain level of moisture across the golf course the following morning always place one sprinkler in before you take one out Kevin would say He was trying to tell me about pressure and water dynamics As a teenager you pick things up especially if you enjoy the craft I certainly did and have fond memories of the early days where the stress and pressures of the profession were non existent We were not even remotely aware of the business model and expectations those young owners were experiencing The clientele was happy and always received a friendly warm smile a polite hello and a well kept golf course considering the resources and the efforts of those who knew so little times have changed but the effort certainly has not The History of Golf Course Irrigation is profound from its early years of hand dug wells beside the greens of St Andrews to the sand greens of early Pinehurst Of which National Golf Links and Pinehurst were early pioneers in automatic irrigation To think a complete irrigation system installation at Brentwood Country Club in the 1950 s cost 120 000 Today the advancement in material technologies and specifications relative to precise watering practices has led to a recent influx in new irrigation system upgrades The construction boom of the 1980 s has come full circle and the 30 year life expectancy of most infrastructure has impacted the North American private club market https archive lib msu edu tic holen article 2003may11 pdf With this said the anticipation of a tremendous season is upon us Behind the scenes countless volunteer Member hours and special committees are working to ensure the planning communication and implementation of this season s 2022 Master Plan By all accounts the experience of our professional architects Hurdzan Golf combined with the thoughtful enthusiasm of specialists and all involved will shape a clear pathway to defined success The Agronomy Team is excited for another season of freshly clipped turf and fresh morning air With favourable spring weather the exciting Faces in the Club FACES IN THE CLUB JESSICA BIRCH PRO SHOP ATTENDANT Bio I grew up here in London and attended Trent University for nursing school After completing my BScN I moved back to London and began my career as a registered nurse at University Hospital on the Orthopaedic unit I worked full time on Orthopaedics for 3 years but recently started working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit NICU at Victoria Hospital Working in the NICU has always been a goal of mine since beginning nursing so it has been very exciting and rewarding to achieve it It has been a big transition switching from working with adults to the tiny babies but I am enjoying the opportunity to learn a new specialty and challenge myself in a critical care setting I started working at the Hunt Club in the summer of 2015 in the Pro Shop and with the Junior camp and later worked in the Backshop and as a Starter I began my first summer at the Club after completing my first year of university and I imagined myself working at the Club until I was finished school At the time I did not expect to still be working at the Club all these years later but I am happy to be returning for my 8th season this summer Future Goals My goal for this summer is to work on improving my golf game I d like to think I ve picked up on a few things over the years but I am still very much a beginner golfer I am hoping that my fellow Pro Shop team members can assist me with achieving this goal Hobbies Throughout the pandemic I have grown to love reading books baking for friends and family doing puzzles and staying active with at home workouts Regularly some of my other hobbies include going to concerts with friends trying new restaurants and patios as well as travelling and exploring new places One of my favourite summers was spent in Madrid Spain as an au pair where I was able to take weekend trips to new cities and countries throughout Europe 20 Favourite Thing About the Club I really love the atmosphere of the Club overall From the Members to the staff to the course and landscape itself it s hard to find something not to like and appreciate The Members are great about not only asking how your day is going but also engaging in conversation beyond that Feeling recognized and valued by the membership is an aspect of what makes working at the Club so enjoyable The staff are another one of my favourite things about the Club and a big part of what keeps me returning each summer They are all people I can laugh with learn from and depend on Despite Chris optimistic and frequent suggestion that I take the summer off from the hospital to work at the Club fulltime throughout the golf season I am fortunate to be able to balance both jobs While I do sincerely enjoy nursing working at the Club has provided me with a positive change of pace and scenery from my shift work at the hospital especially these past few years to which I am thankful for SPRING 2022

JUNIOR REPORT J U N I O R F E AT U R E KAYLA CROSS Where are you right now I am currently in Brazil playing in an ITF Junior J1 tournament 2019 W TA FU T U14 F URE S inal What motivates you to compete at such a high level It takes a lot of work dedication and sacrifice to get to the level I am at now but I still want to go much further To be able to travel the world and play the sport I love is definitely the biggest motivation The better I can get the more longer I get to travel and see new things TARS What other sports do you love I love soccer I played competitive soccer up until Covid and I loved every minute of it Being able to play as a team and get to go through the highs and lows with your friends was amazing but I would never pick anything over tennis How do you balance school and tennis It is definitely a hard task balancing both but staying organized and communicating is very important Planning out my days and knowing that I need to put aside 3 4 hrs of school each day is important so that I stay on track with my classes Communication is a huge part in this as well my teachers know where I am and what kind of hours I have to work with at all times Who is your favourite athlete Ashleigh Barty is my favourite athlete because she is an amazing tennis player that has a similar game style as me She played multiple sports growing up and most importantly she is so kind to all her fans and takes the time to talk to the junior players What is your favourite pre game meal I would like to say I have one but it varies as my matches can be as early as 8 30 a m or as late as 9 00 p m so it really depends on the time of day Of course what country I am in also dictates the options available to me at any given time What is one thing that you always bring with you when you travel My phone it s probably a very 2022 thing to say but I use it every day I use it for school to contact my family my friends my coaches at home and google translate It s an everyday essential for me Where is your favourite place to compete My favourite place to compete at is Wimbledon for sure It has this unique atmosphere to the site and last year when I played there in the junior event I had a lot of supporters What is your greatest achievement to date Getting to the finals of Junior Australian Open doubles last month and being able to play on Margaret Court Arena It was a surreal experience that I will never forget It made me realize how far I have come and it gave me a lot of motivation to keep working hard so that I can play the Women s Australian Open Who do you listen to prior to a match Around 20 30min before my match I talk to my coach to go over my game plan then 15min before I do a quick activation sprints and change of directions and then the last 10 minutes before I go on I like to put my headphones on and listen to music and be by myself to relax and focus What advice do you have for young athletes who want to compete at a high level For young athletes I would say that playing multiple sports is very important because if you do too many hours of the same thing all the time you can get burnt out To enjoy every moment the good and the hard times because that s what helps you get to the next level Lastly to work hard but remember that tennis is not who you are it is what you do You need to want it not your parents not your coaches It is your life so you need to want and enjoy it in the end 22 SPRING 2022
