on since 2012 The complex will include baseball fields softball fields football soccer and rugby fields a concession stand with restrooms and walking trails Fundraising is challenging and this is the largest fundraising endeavor in recent history for Sparta The process has taken longer than we hoped but we are well on our way as this massive undertaking is worth it for what the results will be for our community Opening in 2018 Yes that goal and dream is becoming a reality A number of tasks have been completed in 2017 and the SRA Board is excited to have projects moving forward As funding permits we have a timeline of items to be completed in the months to come and we are busy organizing the various companies and laborers In Kind and contracted to get the work completed There are several items that we will continue to work on over the next couple of months Pending grant bid approvals the irrigation system will be installed the diamond dust for the ball fields will be delivered and the test well will be drilled The concession stand has been started and construction will continue throughout the Fall The soil on the playing fields has been tested and will be treated and maintained according to the results of those tests Despite the lack of rain this summer the grass is growing and is being mowed as needed There is still a lot of work to do but the Project Plan has been developed and is being implemented Funding for this project is also continuing We have been awarded a DNR Land Water matching grant of 150 000 This is wonderful news However since this is a matching grant it means we have to spend 300 000 on the designated items and then we will be reimbursed half of that amount The other challenge of this grant is that it requires all paperwork and bids to be approved by the Federal government We cannot do any of the work listed on the grant prior to that approval or we jeopardize losing the grant Once again timing is everything This has been a challenge but the SRA Board Project Manager and Contractors have been working through all timing issues as they arise Throughout this project there have been many generous In Kind donations of labor and materials from companies and individuals We would like to acknowledge and thank them for their efforts Without their generosity this project would not be moving forward Tim Gordon Design Leroy SpartaTODAY Volume 18 Issue 15 November 2017 The Sparta 500 Takes Off The Sparta 500 a snowmobile race took place on the weekend of October 13th And although the races on Saturday October 14 were cancelled due to rain the Friday October 13 races were a success Snowmobile racers not only were local folks but from all over the Midwest as well Reaching speeds up to 140 mph at 500 ft the spectators seemed to enjoy the excitement at the annual Sparta 500 event Your Local Watershed and You What can you do to help protect your watershed Do you know what a watershed is Did you know you are in a watershed right now Think of a giant glass bowl Now picture a drop of water hitting the rim of the bowl sliding down the side and finally resting on the bottom of the bowl Each drop of water that hits the rim will follow the same routine down the side to the bottom The bottom of the bowl eventually fills with those water drops This is a small scale demonstration of a watershed A watershed is an area of land that drains into the same body of water whether it s a stream river lake or ocean All of the land that drains into the Grand River also referred to as the Grand River Basin represents a subwatershed of the Lake Michigan Basin To find out which subwatershed you live in enter your address in the Lower Grand River Watershed Map at LGROW org Grand Haven Grand Rapids When it rains the water that isn t soaked back into the ground is called stormwater Stormwater runs off of impervious surfaces like concrete driveways and asphalt paved streets then eventually into the Grand River Unfortunately stormwater can carry a lot of harmful waste on its way to our lakes and streams gas and oil from parking lots excess fertilizer from your lawn pet waste and various other pollutants These pollutants can end up in the lakes rivers and streams in which we fish play and swim What Can You Do You can help reduce the pollutants entering our waterways and their negative impact on our environment in many ways from picking up after your pet to installing a rain barrel on your property For a full list of activities to prevent stormwater pollution in the Lower Grand River Watershed visit the Lower Grand River Organization of Watersheds Information and Education Page at LGROW org Share Explore Protect Heading the ChoiceOne Outreach Committee are President and CEO don t worry There will be more snowmobile racing on December 2nd at 11 AM with a 5 00 cover charge at the grounds located at 10129 Peach Ridge AVE NW Sparta MI Your Local Watershed and You How You Can Help Reduce Pollution Entering The Grand River Stormwater is rain water that isn t soaked into the ground during a rain event As stormwater passes over impervious surfaces like streets and parking lots it picks up pollutants such as oil and grease from parking lots and roadways excess fertilizer from lawns and pet waste Locally this stormwater is not treated rather it is discharged to the Grand River and its tributaries via storm sewer systems and drainage ditches Find out where stormwater from your property goes by using the Lower Grand River Watershed Map at LGROW org Here are a few ways YOU can reduce stormwater pollution from entering the storm sewer system in your community Reduce stormwater by planting rain gardens and using rain barrels in your gardens to prevent water from leaving your property Keep storm drains near your home clear of litter by disposing of trash and recyclables in proper containers Collect yard waste to prevent grass clippings and leaves from clogging the storm sewer system Avoid fertilizing your lawn before a Why Should You Care 7 rain storm use only the manufacturer s recommendations and sweep up excess fertilizer on hard surfaces like sidewalks driveways and roadways Ensure that soiled water and other wastes from car washing practices do not enter the storm sewer system by washing your car on grass or gravel rather than your driveway Better yet take your vehicles to a commercial car wash that sends wash water through the sanitary sewer Be Septic Smart Keep your septic system maintained to protect your family s drinking water and reduce the risk of contaminating local water Properly dispose of any pet waste in a closed trash receptacle Pet waste is raw sewage and contains harmful bacteria easily transported to water through stormwater Be conscious in closing lids on dumpsters and outdoor trash cans For more ways to protect the Lower Grand River Watershed visit the Lower Grand River Organization of Watersheds Information SpartaTODAY 21 Volume 18 Issue 15 November 2017 Sparta Area Schools Vol 18 No 15 November 2017 Home of the Michigan Blue Ribbon Exemplary School www spartaschools org BELL RINGER GREETINGS FROM GORDIE Dear District Residents It is hard to believe that we are almost two full months into the 2017 2018 school year I think having the hottest week of the summer in September took us all by surprise I am not sure what that means for this coming winter but maybe just enjoying this weather right now is all we should think about Two of our three projects from the first phase of our 2016 bond issue are complete The renovations at both Appleview and Ridgeview were extensive with a tight time line Thanks to the many contractors who made sure sufficient crews were on hand and who were not afraid to work later into the day we were able to gain occupancy on August 28th That did not leave a lot of time for our teachers to set up their rooms but they too rolled up their sleeves and got to work so that all was ready for students on September 5th We continue to be very grateful for the opportunity the Sparta Community gave us with the bond issue Our third project is the new athletic complex at our high school It is scheduled to be completed this December As of this writing we are not sure if we will be able to use the facilities this coming spring but we will keep everyone posted and if all goes as planned our spring athletes might see some time in our new complex Not as visible as the physical renovations and building is the technology We made some needed upgrades to our infrastructure including enlarging our bandwidth and increasing the number of wireless access points Also our high school went one to one with students receiving a Chromebook Our K 5 teachers received some updated classroom devices including audio enhancement so that their voice can be heard in all areas of the classroom Again all of this is due to the generosity of our great community Thank you for the opportunities you have given us to help make our facilities more secure and for allowing us to enrich the environments we have for our students and their learning Last year I wrote a little bit about an issue we have with chronic absenteeism with about 20 of our students Though this might seem like a small percentage it literally involves over 400 students So though the majority of you do not have to be concerned about this issue for your family I do want to reach out to those who do If you think of the game Jenga every time you remove a piece of the structure the structure becomes less stable Missing school is much the same way Every day missed has a negative impact on a student s overall performance Any student who misses 15 days of school in one year would be considered chronically absent Any student who misses more than 3 days in a given month is considered truant by definition of the laws we have in the State of Michigan I know some may think that it does not affect anyone but their student However that is not true Teachers need to take time to try to catch students up students miss out on the rich conversation with the teacher and classmates that cannot be replicated Students who have poor attendance score lower on tests which does not bode well for our district as we are marked down on our school accountability card If you find you have a student that would be considered chronically absent or truant please contact your student s building principal and set up a meeting to work together to come up with a plan to improve attendance We want to work with you so that we can help your student reach their fullest potential Please be sure to look through the Bellringer to see some of the exciting things that have been going on since opening our doors on September 5th We greatly appreciate the opportunity we have to work with your students and family As the month of November looms ahead please know we are thankful for our awesome students wonderful families and great community Gordie Nickels Superintendent If there is hope in the future there is power in the present John Maxwell Fire Station Visit All of the Kindergarten classes enjoyed a field trip to the Grand Rapids Fire Department Bridge Street Station and Schwallier s Country Basket Apple Orchard during the week of October 2 5 At the fire station the students learned about the equipment on the fire trucks where the firefighters sleep and even got to sit in a river rescue boat After the fire station the students enjoyed the beautiful weather and ate lunch outside at Wahlfield Park Then the students ventured on to Schwallier s Country Basket where they picked an apple in the orchard fed the goats and of course ate a donut They definitely had a fun time Appleview Premiere On August 29th the red carpet was rolled out at Appleview to welcome students back to an exciting school year This premiere was filled with a variety of activities During this grand celebration the students were greeted by paparazzi who snapped photos of students with their families The students were able to view the newly remodeled library cafeteria and main entrance area Then they were greeted by their teachers as they stepped into their classrooms Afterwards all of the stu dents in attendance were able to enter their names into a drawing for video gift cards As families exited from this magical experience they were given popcorn provided by Wesco This night was truly a wonderful starfilled evening
