This trip toRomania  will  allow  you to experience severalaspects of European life  – the cities, thecountryside, and the breathtaking mountains! Ihave lived and taught in Romania for over threeyears  and  keep finding myself returning. Ourcourse will focus on the psychological values andtypes of living experienced by Romanians, with aparticular focus on the issue of trust (and mistrust)and the pivotal role that trust plays in ourindividual and communal lives. Our journey will  begin  in Bucharest, a  city  thatshines with the architecture and charm of anyWestern European capital yet also bears the scars of decades  of rule  by a brutal communistregime. After  reflecting on  the ways  that trustwas demolished throughout the 80s in Bucharest, we move on  to  our work and training  with  anon-profit organization that seeks  to build  trustand community among Romanian teens. Workingwith these young leaders in rural Transylvania, wewill experience and help them in  their efforts tocultivate ecotourism  and  the appreciation ofRomania’s beautiful landscape and traditions. Wewill also work closely  with  members  of a Romacommunity. The heart of this  study abroad experience mightbe captured in the concept of “local.” Just as this trip is spent getting to know Romaniansthemselves, their land, and their customs, we willalso  come to  understand better ourselves, ourfellow travelers, and even our own culture. As westudy  and watch Romanians struggle  fordemocratic  values and better ways of living,  weponder  our own culture’s continued struggles tounderstand the effects of various lifestyles on ourown mental health.
