Bucharest: 4 nightsBrasov: 2 nightsTusnad: 2 nightsChirpar: 5 nightsSibiu: 2 nights Dear Students, I invite you to join me this summer on anadventure that will change your life! This trip toRomania will allow you to experience severalaspects of European life – the cities, thecountryside, and the breathtaking mountains! Ihave lived and taught in Romania for over threeyears and keep finding myself returning. Ourcourse will focus on the psychological values andtypes of living experienced by Romanians, with aparticular focus on the issue of trust (and mistrust)and the pivotal role that trust plays in ourindividual and communal lives. Our journey will begin in Bucharest, a city thatshines with the architecture and charm of anyWestern European capital yet also bears the scarsof decades of rule by a brutal communist regime. After reflecting on the ways that trust wasdemolished throughout the 80s in Bucharest, wemove on to our work and training with a non-profit organization that seeks to build trust andcommunity among Romanian teens. Workingwith these young leaders in rural Transylvania, wewill experience and help them in their efforts tocultivate ecotourism and the appreciation ofRomania’s beautiful landscape and traditions. Wewill also work closely with members of a Romacommunity. The heart of this study abroad experience mightbe captured in the concept of “local.” Just as thistrip is spent getting to know Romaniansthemselves, their land, and their customs, we willalso come to understand better ourselves, ourfellow travelers, and even our own culture. As westudy and watch Romanians struggle fordemocratic values and better ways of living, weponder our own culture’s continued struggles tounderstand the effects of various lifestyles on ourown mental health.
