2Greetings!Back in January, I made the decision to turn our originally scheduled, full-length ballet of Snow White, a theater performance, into a live-action movie (Whew!). I was determined to create an experience that would still immerse our audience into the wondrous world of live performance despite the fact that backdrops, lighting and facial expressions were not really an option. From our endearing bunnies to our striking queen, I am condent that these dancers and their talents will steal your heart. But the story that you cannot see is the one that happened behind the screen, and that is the fairest of them all. I will admit that I had no clue what making a movie would look like, or should look like. I wasn’t aware of the hundreds of thousands of little details that would need to be adjusted from creating a theater performance, to creating a performance for lm... and I wasn’t working with a Hollywood budget. But what I did have, was a small, but mighty team of artists, professionals, and volunteers who were passionate and innovative and whole-heartedly believed in what we were creating. Week after week I watched our team adapt to uneven ground, inclement weather, freezing cold temperatures, wet toes, packing and loading, unloading and packing, and transforming four Connecticut locations into our Snow White set.It should come as no surprise that my heart overows with pride and joy to nally share the hard work of this journey with all of you. Thank you again for supporting this performance. Enjoy!Sincerely,Stephanie DattellasArtistic DirectorPhoto by Lanny Nagler Photography

17SNOW WHITE SYNOPSISSNOW WHITE SYNOPSISPROLOGUEDuring a winter snowfall, a Queen sits sewing by an open window. She accidentally pricks her nger with her needle, causing three drops of blood to drip onto the freshly-fallen, white snow. She then says to herself, “How I wish that I had a daughter that had skin white as snow, lips red as blood, and hair as black as ebony.” A short while later, the queen gives birth to a baby daughter who she names Snow White. Tragically, the queen passes away during childbirth.ACT 1SNOW WHITE’S GARDENMany years later, the courtyard garden awakens to Snow White’s loving attention. She is surrounded by her adoring bunnies, bluebirds, and butteries. In the garden, she unexpectedly meets a handsome stranger. They spend the day together before regrettably parting as dusk falls.EVIL QUEEN’S LAIR - THE QUEEN SUMMONS THE HUNTSMANSnow White’s stepmother, who took reign as the Queen of the kingdom, consults her Magic Mirror to determine who is the fairest in the land. Expecting to hear herself declared the fairest, she is outraged when the Mirror reveals that Snow White is, indeed, the fairest of them all. The Queen sends her sirens to summon the Huntsman, and orders him to take Snow White into the forest and kill her.THE HUNTSMAN’S QUESTThe Huntsman takes Snow White into the forest with every intention of completing his order. However, her happy innocence overcomes him, and he nds that he is unable to take her life. Instead, he sends her deeper into the forest. As night falls, it grows dark and Snow White is frightened. She continues past terrifying sights until the morning light slowly appears, revealing a friendly looking cottage.THE DWARFS’ COTTAGESnow White enters the cottage and nds no one home. She is hesitant at rst, but after her long night in the forest, she soon falls asleep. The Dwarfs return home and awaken her. Delighted to have a guest, they introduce themselves; Brainy, Smiley, Timid, Snoozy, Sniy, Grouchy and Muzzy.EVIL QUEEN’S LAIR - THE BODICE WITCH TRANSFORMATIONBack at the castle, the Queen once again consults the Mirror, only to hear that Snow White still lives, sheltered by Dwarfs deep in the forest. The Queen disguises herself as a beautiful modiste selling handmade bodices and sets o for the Dwarfs’ cottage.adapted from Grimms’ Fairy Tales

18IN THE FOREST WITH SNOW WHITE AND THE BODICE WITCHIn the meadow by the cottage, the Bodice Witch (modiste) enchants Snow White with beautiful bodices draped with owing skirts. After the Bodice Witch convinces Snow White to try on one of her designs, she secures the bodice tightly around Snow White, who, overcome by its evil magic, loses her breath. The Dwarfs return home to nd her laying on the ground and hastily loosen the bodice to revive Snow White.EVIL QUEEN’S LAIR - THE COMB WITCH TRANSFORMATIONUpon returning to her castle, the Queen learns that Snow White escaped the magic bodice. She decides to return to the cottage, this time disguised as a merchant girl, selling ornate jewelry and combs.IN THE FOREST WITH SNOW WHITE AND THE COMB WITCHThe Comb Witch (merchant girl) shows Snow White a beautiful comb and places it in her hair. Snow White is quickly overcome by its evil spell and passes out. When the Dwarfs return home, they nd Snow White lying in the grass. The Dwarfs remove the comb and she is released from its power. Worried and not wanting to leave her alone, the Dwarfs draw straws to see who will stay to protect Snow White. Muzzy draws the shortest straw, so he stays behind as the rest go o to work.EVIL QUEEN’S LAIR - THE APPLE WITCH TRANSFORMATIONThe Queen again learns that Snow White still lives. In a fury, she ips through the pages of her wicked spellbook in search of a spell that Snow White and the Dwarfs won’t be able to thwart. The Queen discovers a spell for a poisonous apple and cackles with glee. With a shiny, very poisonous apple that looks too delicious for Snow White to resist, she disguises herself as a peasant girl and sets o to the Dwarfs’ cottage.IN THE FOREST WITH SNOW WHITE AND THE APPLE WITCHMuzzy and Snow White are enjoying a lovely afternoon in the meadow outside the cottage. The Queen’s sirens slip sleeping powder into his drink and unwittingly, he falls asleep. Without a dwarf to protect Snow White, the Apple Witch (peasant girl) convinces the unsuspecting girl to take a bite of a beautiful, shiny, poisonous apple.SNOW WHITE IS LAID TO RESTThe Dwarfs again return to nd Snow White on the ground, but are unable to wake her. Furious with Muzzy, they confront him, only to nd that he was tricked with a sleeping potion. Saddened, they prepare a beautiful resting place and say good-bye as Muzzy sneaks o in shame.SNOW WHITE SYNOPSISSNOW WHITE SYNOPSIS

33ABOUT BALLET THEATRE COMPANYThe mission of Ballet Theatre Company (BTC) is to enrich Greater Hartford by oering professional-caliber dance productions, dance education for ages 3 to adult in its training school, The School of Ballet Theatre Company, and dance related experiences and workshops free of charge to children who otherwise would not have the opportunity through its Community Youth Outreach Program.BTC was founded in West Hartford in 1999. During its rst three years, the performance company presented an annual spring repertory performance at the Gilman Theater, Greater Hartford Jewish Community Center. In December 2002, BTC accepted an invitation to stage its rst production of The Nutcracker at the University of Saint Joseph’s Homan Auditorium in the Carol Autorino Center for the Arts and Humanities. This production has become an annual tradition for BTC, the Homan Auditorium, and the Greater Hartford community for 19 years. BTC’s annual Spring Repertory performance, held at the Homan Auditorium since 2002, has become a showcase for new works by regional and guest choreographers as well as select repertoire of classical ballets. In 2018, BTC introduced its rst full-length spring ballet, Cinderella. The staging of storybook ballets has since become another annual tradition, with subsequent seasons featuring Sleeping Beauty and Aladdin (canceled due to COVID-19). This year, BTC will adapt the classical ballet into a live-action production of Snow White for lm.Ruth Whitney as Princess Aurora in BTC’s 2019 Sleeping Beauty | Photo by Thomas Giroir

34SEASON 22This season, BTC is celebrating its 22nd anniversary. To celebrate this 2-2 (tutu) season, BTC curated Through the Tulle, a touring costume exhibition, that shines a spotlight on one of the most lovable, and often under-appreciated, parts of ballet productions; it’s tutus and their designers. The 22 costumes included in the exhibit are all designed and handmade by BTC’s talented costumers, and range from pancake tutus to character costumes from four main stage ballets the company has produced, including The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Don Quixote. Through the Tulle has traveled to museums and galleries throughout the Greater Hartford area including the Noah Webster House, the West Hartford Art League, the Hill-Stead Museum, and the Connecticut Children’s Museum, oering attendees the opportunity to learn about one of ballet’s most unique aspects. The exhibit was also on display at Duncaster Retirement Community, a sponsor of Through the Tulle.Carabosse on display at the West Hartford Art League designed by Norma Savarino and featured in BTC’s 2019 Sleeping BeautyPrincess Aurora’s Birthday tutu designed by Pat Nurnberger and featured in BTC’s 2019 Sleeping Beauty | Photo by Erica Marie PhotographyThrg he u
