We are excited about what’s coming, but I would like to look back for a moment rst.We continue to celebrate the ways in which students, teachers and families pulled together to keep the program moving over the past year in challenging circumstances. Before COVID, it would have been hard to imagine the kind of resilience we saw: students taking charge of their own learning as they pivoted back and forth from in-person learning to remote learning; teachers teaching the students in front of them while simultaneously teaching those in another room, another town, or even another country; parents adjusting their lives to support students who were learning at home one day a week or ve days a week. Resuming, remembering, and reimagining

2ECHOES AUGUST 2021. . . continued from page 1Even in the midst of a very strange year, students and teachers still found a way to get the important parts of the curriculum accomplished, to devise and complete creative projects that demonstrated excellent learning, and even to bless our community with initiatives of signicance. We had to gure it out as we went, but together we learned a great deal about making things work whatever came. There is much to celebrate as we look back on last year, and we have learned a lot that can apply to “normal” times going forward. We are not ready to call the new year ‘normal,’ but, with slightly adjusted restrictions, we have been able to restart programs that we were unable to enjoy over the last year and a half. Though the pandemic persists and more waves threaten, our prayer is that these opportunities will increase as the months go by.As we prepared for this year, staff realized that three of our four classes have not had a school year without COVID interruption. This puts our learning community in a remembering and reimagining space. We need to remember the most beautiful aspects of Smithville Christian High School, and we need to reimagine what we can accomplish together as we carry on our call to Belong, Believe and Succeed in times that are inevitably different than they were before the pandemic. Led by the Holy Spirit, this joyful reimagining will be in the forefront of our thoughts and plans as we move through the year ahead. The rst step in that reimagining process was celebrating the return of our students. Being separated from them for so long has reminded us what a beautiful privilege we have to spend time with terric young people and encourage them as disciples of Jesus Christ. Please pray for us as we resume, remember, and reimagine.

3www.smithvillechristian.caThis issue of Echoes celebrates the Class of 2021. As you read on, you will see the smiles and faces of the young men and women of this exible and resilient class, and you will hear, in their own words, how grateful they are to be graduates of Smithville Christian. What a joy it is to launch so many bright, talented, and well-equipped teenagers into the world, trusting that they have a grasp of God’s love for them and God’s call on their lives. But launching all these students in this way would not be possible without our Annual Bursary Campaign, which supports over 30% of the families who send their kids here.Of course, you have heard of all the challenges that faced every school during this past year. Yet, I am so pleased to be able to say that our bursary fund did not miss a beat. Why? Because of the wonderful, continued generosity of our supporters. Thanks to our donors – people like you – the bursary fund had all it needed to support eligible families for the coming school year well before the school year began! Not only that, the fund has a very strong head start on the support we will be able to offer in the 2022-2023 school year. The astounding thing to note here is that all this support came our way during a pandemic and without the ability to have a bursary celebration or a formal campaign. We talk to supporters and encourage giving, but it is a great blessing simply to see cheques and automatic monthly gifts keep rolling in. It’s incredible to see that support for Christian education is simply a matter of routine for so many. This support is our lifeblood, and I can’t tell you how grateful families are to receive the nancial boost that results from this kind of generosity. What a blessing to be able to surround hundreds of teenagers a year with a promise that a community of support is praying for them and their school, offering them and their teachers words of encouragement, or sending cheques or making automatic donations – of all sizes. And these are gifts that keep on giving. There are former students who once received bursary support who are today’s donors to our bursary fund. What a beautiful thing – to see the generosity paid forward. If you want to join the ranks of those who give ongoing support to our bursary fund, please visit www.smithvillechristian.ca to donate online, or send an eTransfer to finance@smithvillechristian.ca. Cheques can be dropped off or mailed to the address on the front cover.Bursary FundBY TED HARRIS, ADMINISTRATORStay tuned for an invitation to an upcoming celebration of God’s goodness to Smithville Christian. We want to invite you to dinner this fall, and give you a chance to hear more stories of how God is at work in the lives of our students, teachers, parents, and alumni.

4ECHOES AUGUST 2021Walking the red carpet: graduation COVID-styleBY MARLENE BERGSMA, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS AND ADVANCEMENTOnce it became clear that a traditional grad was going to be in jeopardy for the second year in a row, a decision was made – with input from students – to hold an online event. But students were also promised that the school would take advantage, as much as possible, of the gathering options available to them at the end of June.A videographer was hired, a program was drafted, a praise team was formed, and the Class of 2021 chose a theme verse and valedictorians.A two-storey, outdoor screen was booked, a red carpet was rented, treats and balloons were ordered, and students were invited to book a ve-minute time slot to don a grad gown and personalize their walk across “the stage.”All the recordings were made early in June, and, on June 30, the night on which grad was originally scheduled, students and their parents were invited to come to school and arrange themselves safely in the school parking lot. The YouTube premiere was slated for 9:30 p.m., when the sky would be sufciently dark for good visibility. Staff were on hand to serve as ushers and to serve popcorn, and the students and their families were blessed with a beautiful summer evening.Donate your yearHelp keep the blessing of a Christian education goingIf you are a supporter of Smithville Christian High School, or an alumnus, or an alumni parent, please consider donating your year – the year you graduated or the year you made your last tuition payment. You can donate it once a year, or once a month. You can put the decimal point wherever you want.We need $200,000 a year for our bursary fund to support three out of every ten students. If half of the alumni from each graduating year set up a monthly gift, donating their year every month, and the rest gave just once a year, we would exceed our goal. That would be awesome!Your gift, no matter the size, makes a difference. Visit www.smithvillechristian.ca to make a one-time gift or set up monthly giving. Or eTransfer to finance@smithvillechristian.ca or send a cheque to Smithville Christian High School, P.O. Box 40, Smithville, Ontario, L0R 2A0.

5www.smithvillechristian.caA graduation-by-video is not what the school or students would choose, but releasing the video online gave students and their families in Nigeria, South Korea, China, and around the world an opportunity to participate and attend. It also means there is a permanent record of the Class of 2021 on the school’s YouTube channel, which students and their families can share or watch again. It also appears to be popular. In addition to the roughly 200 people who watched it together in the parking lot that night and another 400-plus online, the video now has over 780 views – more people than could t in our traditional church venue!Graduation from a Christian high school is an accomplishment and a blessing. It is the culmination of dedication and hard work on the part of students, and of love and devotion on the part of parents, guardians, and a supportive community. Smithville Christian High School teachers, board, families, and staff celebrate the resilience and accomplishments of these young men and women. We are proud of them, and we wish them God’s continued blessings.CLASS OF 2021 THEME VERSE“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” – 1 JOHN 4:4See pages 12 and 13 for the valedictorians’ explanation for how this verse applies to the students’ experience.Watch the videoThe graduation of the Smithville Christian High School Class of 2021 can be viewed via a link from the bulletin board of the school’s website, or here: https://youtu.be/nywuGadPtKs

6ECHOES AUGUST 2021Vices and virtues: thoughts for the Class of 2021 on Portfolio Day 2021BY WILL LAMMERS, VP OF PROGRAMPortfolio Day is an annual event at Smithville Christian, held in late spring, when the soon-to-be-graduates reect on their experiences in high school, and how they were shaped – academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually – by their teachers, peers, and learning. On pages 10 and 11 you can read excerpts from what the students shared. For the second year in a row, Portfolio Day was held via Zoom. Here is the meditation (edited for length) that began the day.Dear graduates, parents and families, teachers, staff and guests:Welcome to Portfolio Day 2021! Guests, it is so good to have you with us, whether for the rst time or again. Parents, we are encouraged that you could be with us to start the day in devotions. Panellists, and especially those who are our guests at portfolio presentations, thank you so much for making time in your schedule to be with us today. Students, your presence at this event is a graduation requirement, but it should also represent an opportunity for you to both celebrate and reect: to celebrate your accomplishments over your time at Smithville Christian; and to reect on your personal journey – in terms of your academic and spiritual development through learning, both inside and outside your classes at Smithville Christian.Students, while it would be true to say we’ve all been in this together, it would not be true that we’ve all had the same experiences. It is clear that your individual lives and experiences with learning have been vastly different. So, let me start by congratulating each of you on getting to this point. I commend you on your perseverance, and commend you for the many and distinct ways you contributed positively and signicantly to forming and nurturing Christian community at Smithville Christian. Well done, and thank you.

Page 7

7www.smithvillechristian.caWhen we reect on the state of the world, we can’t help but see evidence of brokenness. God did not design creation to be this way. God designed the Christian life to begin and end with love, and what draws us from brokenness and bondage is the power of God’s love. The Bible – from creation, through humankind’s fall into sin, through redemption through the death and resurrection of Jesus, and ultimately to restoration in the power of the Holy Spirit – is God’s story of love. John 3:16 summarizes this love: “God so loved the world that He sent His one and only Son Jesus, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”As you and I reect on our own individual patterns of living, we need to be careful to remember that God’s love should have the rst and the last word, and to be careful also not to let thoughts rooted in brokenness to seep into our thinking and attitudes. Just as Jesus rst forgave the sins of the person who was paralyzed before healing him (Mk. 2:1-12), we need to be careful not to dismiss certain root attitudes of sin out of a false compassion for people. Things like hatred, gossip, bitterness, envy, pride, and fearfulness can easily seep into our minds. To use the term of one author, these are vices that have a glittering attraction, because they can trap us with a false sense of security; they are vices that can take grip on us and affect our health and well-being. Unfortunately, we see evidence even in Christian communities of these vices in speech and division that do not reect the kind of love that God intended. Attitudes affect our character, and character affects everything else we do.So then, how should we live? What patterns of thought and rhythms of desire might I have that hinder me from knowing a life in God’s love? How do I discern that? What practices would help me to nd and be reassured by this new way of life?Instead of getting trapped in vices, we should adopt virtues, which are attitudes that are antidotes to the vices. These spiritual disciplines bring life and healing to people individually and relationally. These virtues include meekness, kindness and gratitude, moderation, self-control, patience, generosity/stewardship, diligence, and faithfulness. These virtues will help us understand what a life of security in God’s love means. These virtues are not glittery, but they are rooted in wisdom and yield peace and blessing.Today in your portfolio presentations, you will share of the signicant learning experiences you achieved in your four years at Smithville Christian. I would challenge you to examine those learning experiences again. Look for and build on the experiences that nurtured virtue in you. Dwell on and foster those habits and virtues, because they will guide you to understand the goal for your lives as Christians: to act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. (Mic. 6:8)May the Lord bless you and keep you; may the Lord’s face shine up upon you and be gracious to you; and may the Lord turn toward you and give you peace. (Num. 6:24)

10ECHOES AUGUST 2021Gratitude, wisdom, and perspective from the Class of 2021BY MARLENE BERGSMA, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS AND ADVANCEMENTDuring their portfolio interviews in May – held by Zoom – the students of the Class of 2021 reviewed academic highlights from their high school careers and were invited to reect on how they grew. While COVID-19 and remote learning certainly put a damper on their experiences, these students also demonstrated wisdom, a realistic perspective, resilience, gratitude, and trust in God. Here is some of what they shared.“I tried to transform my thinking from a negative one of ‘I don’t understand how to do this,’ to a positive one of “Oh, this was not so bad.’ ““Overall, my education and spiritual journey at Smithville Christian has helped me to grow more as an individual and as a believer.”“I am grateful for the wonderful amount of spiritual support I have received from teachers and staff members.”“My educational and spiritual journey at Smithville Christian has led me to uncover and heighten my inquisitiveness, passion for seeking justice, knowledge, and understanding, as well as reecting creativity as a child of God.”“This project let me be a servant-worker, one who works actively to heal brokenness and bring joy.”“I absolutely loved the experience [of a Grade 11 pig dissection biology lab]. It was amazing to see the anatomy Thoughts about the resilience of the Class of 2021 BY LINDA BOOY-KORVEMAKER, HEAD OF STUDENT SERVICESThe students of the Class of 2021 were the most impacted by COVID-19 -- the majority of their senior years in high school. More of them deferred post-secondary education than is typical – but that is also a new trend. This class shows incredible and continued resiliency and stands out for that reason. They adapt and, although disappointed at what they missed, they don’t dwell on it and instead make the most of it. The Class of 2021 accepts the challenges of change and uncertainty and continues to move forward with hope and determination to help and change the world for the better.

Page 11

11www.smithvillechristian.caof the pig and hold everything from its heart to its lungs. This lab boosted my love and interest to pursue a career in the medical field . . . as I love learning about God’s creation, specifically the human body.”“I am truly grateful for the teachers and staff at Smithville Christian and the guidance and support they have shown me.”“I have really enjoyed my time here being able to be open about my faith.”“Smithville Christian has taught me so much about myself and allowed me to grow into my learning, relationships, and most importantly, my faith journey.”“This [project] pushed me to go above and beyond.”“I have always struggled with group projects, but I was able to grow in that area and become more comfortable with who I am and how I can work with others.”“God created everybody in a different and unique way, and put you on this earth with a purpose and plan for you.”“COVID-19 truly affected my Grade 11 and 12 years. There were many things I looked forward to that never happened. My whole life had to adjust . . . and there were many times where I would just break down and cry. But I am just around the corner of reaching my goal and starting a new chapter in my life! Thanks to my teachers, my principal, my parents, and my cl assm ates! ”“This school teaches good values and how to act out your faith daily. It creates leaders – people who aren’t afraid to go out in their community and thrive in a profession. The teachers here are also amazing.”“I’ve learned a lot through my four years at Smithville. I’ve gained skills, resiliency, confidence, and knowledge. I started out absolutely terrified of heading to high school. I have grown in so many ways, and have made incredible friendships with both students and teachers that I am so grateful for.”“I have had so many opportunities to develop into the person that God intended.”“When I rst came, I was quite scared, because I knew no one and I have struggled with learning and remembering. But the staff and my fellow peers helped me adjust and they were all very welcoming. At Smithville Christian I grew academically, mentally, and spiritually. I couldn’t have asked for better teachers to help guide me through these past four years.”

12We overcame!BY MACKENZIE BEZUYEN AND NATHAN GERRYTSThe Class of 2021 chose two valedictorians: Mackenzie Bezuyen and Nathan Gerryts. Because of the pandemic and the decision to have an online graduation, Mackenzie and Nathan recorded their valedictory address in advance. They walked through the school, taking turns sharing memories from the past four years. Here are their concluding comments.COVID really made a mess of our nal year. We took nothing for granted. The time we got to spend together with our classmates was cherished, and we didn’t get a lot of it. The library played an integral part in our class’s community. It was the one place where we had the time to be with each other, but then we went online again, so the only place we were together was Zoom. We were forced to adapt to a rapid change in education. For some it was a difcult task, but we made it through. This day is the culmination of four years of dedication and perseverance, and we encourage you to take a moment and reect on what an accomplishment this truly is.As we arrive at this bend in the road, it is hard to see what lies ahead. We are collectively taking a step into the unknown, but we are prepared for this. Our parents and staff have set us up for success and it is up to us to take a hold of it.Our graduation theme for tonight comes from 1 John 4:4: “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” The “them” in the verse is referring to the spirits or false gods that were tempting the early Christians. Overcoming has remained a consistent theme throughout not only our grade 12 year, but throughout our high school career. We have had challenges thrown our way since entering high school; some we have experienced as a group, and some we fought personally behind the scenes.ECHOES AUGUST 2021

Page 13

We are not only talking about COVID-19 either. It is important to look beyond, and to acknowledge all the difculties, big or small. High school wasn’t always a piece of cake. There were the late nights spent doing homework, getting back the test you failed, and submitting your half-nished project two days late. That was high school: an accumulation of little things and little moments. But adding them all together it became something so much greater. Looking back, we can’t remember every single day, or every class, but we remember how we felt.We remember getting a project back we did really well on, feeling proud of the work that we put in. We remember our friends cheering us on in whatever it was we were doing. We remember who was there for us when we didn’t make that team we wanted to be on. As we grow we will continue to collect even more of these moments, snapshots of the life we live, and, by the end of it, I hope you all can say you lived it to the fullest. But that doesn’t just mean with joy. Sometimes that also means life with pain. Life will be hard, and it will be painful. We will fall short. And that is okay. That’s all part of the human experience. But we have and believe in God who is bigger than that. God goes through all of our trials with us. So when we’re in our seasons of defeat and we’re at what feels like the end, we can rest assured knowing that we have a God in us who is greater than the one who is in the world. God placed us here in the world for a reason. Though it sometimes may not feel like it. God has a plan and a purpose for each of us. However small our purpose may seem, it was important enough for an omnipotent being to create you. \Wherever you end up your career, it is your chance to show God through your work. God will use you wherever you are.www.smithvillechristian.caThanks!It’s an honour for us to stand here today as your valedictorians! Without the help and encouragement of our community, we wouldn’t have been able to make it here today. On behalf of the class of 2021, we would like to thank a few groups who have helped us through these years. To our parents, we want to thank you for the love and continued faith you have in us. We know it takes a great deal of commitment and sacrice to let us enjoy Christian education, and we would not be here without you. To our grandparents and chosen family, we want to thank you for the support you constantly show us. It is a joy to be able to show you the fruits of our efforts. To our teachers, staff, and members of the board, we want to thank you for the time that you have dedicated to us. Our time at Smithville Christian was rich in learning, and we won’t forget the relationships that we’ve built with each of you. To the community that surrounds Smithville Christian High, we want to thank you for letting us learn alongside you. We appreciate the support that is shown to us. We would like to show our thanks to God, as he is the one who has brought us all here today. As John states: It is through God that we were able to overcome all the hardships that were brought upon us. Finally, we would like to thank the Class of 2021. It has been amazing getting to know each and every one of you. We wish you all the best as we part ways. There is no way to know what the future holds, but we know that it’s in God’s hands.13

14ECHOES AUGUST 2021Saying farewell to the Class of 2021 and welcome to the Class of 2025BY MARLENE BERGSMA, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS AND ADVANCEMENTAs Smithville Christian bids farewell to the Class of 2021, we are delighted to welcome the masked members of the Class of 2025. We are especially delighted because the class is bigger than we rst thought it might be, and because these students joined our school despite all the restrictions placed on our recruitment efforts by COVID-19. • We couldn’t invite them to our school for Grade 8 Day in November 2020. • We couldn’t visit most of them in their elementary school classrooms in December 2020. • We couldn’t invite them to an Open House and Celebration of Learning in January 2021.But there were many things we could do. • Thanks to their elementary school teachers at Beacon, Cairn, and Dunnville Christian schools, we could send them treats and pay a virtual visit to their computer screens. • Student Ambassador Kendra Kikkert led students on a virtual tour via a YouTube video. • We created an online Guide for Prospective Students. • Over 100 students and parents joined us online on January 21 for a Virtual Open House, which featured presentations from Grade 9 teachers, nancial information, and a session led by guidance counsellor Linda Booy-Korvemaker, who, among other things, explained what makes Smithville Christian unique. Smithville Christian students Mackenzie, Kendra, Ephraim, and David talked about their experiences of Belonging, Believing, and Succeeding at this school. We are grateful for the opportunity to keep telling the story of God’s love and the story of this school, and grateful for a wonderful new group of students who will make this school’s story their own. Do you know someone who might be blessed by a Christian high school education? Invite them on a virtual tour. bit.ly/SmithvilleChristian_VirtualTourShare the Guide for Prospective Students. bit.ly/2021_GuideForProspectiveStudentsInvite them to contact us. mbergsma@smithvillechristian.caSmithville Christian is a wonderful place for students to Belong, Believe, and Succeed.
