An Introduction to Lawn Nutrition This quick guide will help you design and plan your lawn fertiliser treatments If you need help with a specific nutritional problem or require a soil analysis interpretation please contact a member of the GreenBest sales team We are happy to help What nutrients do plants need To live and grow all plants need access to a selection of essential nutrients Each nutrient has a different role in the plant so it is important that all the required nutrients are available Providing all the required nutrients in the right quantities at the right times helps to keep a lawn healthy green and growing Lawns get their three most important nutrients from air and water Carbon C Hydrogen H and Oxygen O The remaining nutrients are split into two groups Macronutrients which are required in relatively large quantities and Micronutrients that are required in smaller quantities Macronutrients Nitrogen N Phosphorus P Potassium K Calcium Ca Magnesium Mg Sulphur S Micronutrients Boron B Chlorine CI Copper Cu Iron Fe Manganese Mn Molybdenum Mo Nickel Ni Zinc Zn Why do we need to treat lawns with fertiliser Whilst natural processes in the soil can provide some of the above nutrients to the lawn they cannot keep up with nutrient loss from normal care activities such as mowing To replace the nutrients lost when clippings are removed from a lawn we must apply a fertiliser This will keep the lawn green thick and growing healthily 8

Page 9

What happens if a lawn is short of nutrients If a lawn is deficient in any of the essential nutrients you will start to notice deterioration in colour and vigour A nutrient deficient lawn is also susceptible to disease so you may notice a rise in fungal and bacterial problems Applying the correct balance of fertiliser treatments throughout the year will prevent deficiencies occurring A member of the GreenBest sales team will be able to assist you if you need any help or advice choosing the right fertilisers for your treatment plan Liquid vs granular fertiliser A liquid fertiliser treatment is perfect for providing an instant nutrition boost to the lawn and can take effect in only a few hours They are ideal for use before an important event when rapid colour improvement is required and for supplementing granular treatments Granular fertilisers are better suited for regular lawn treatments as they provide longer lasting nutrition Our spring summer granular fertiliser can last up to 3 months by contrast liquid feeds will last a maximum of 4 weeks Effect of pH on nutrient availability The ideal soil pH for a lawn depends on the grass species growing in it however a soil pH of between 6 and 6 5 will suit most domestic lawns pH meters and testing kits are easy to get hold of and allow you to get a rough idea of the pH of the soil Soil pH can vary depending on several factors including geographical location and soil type Very low or very high pH can cause nutrients to become unavailable this will cause a nutrient deficiency even if you are applying plenty of the nutrient in your fertilisers Correcting a pH problem is a long term process if you are treating a lawn with a significant problem it may be worth asking a member of the GreenBest sales team for advice Other factors affecting lawn health The sun is very important to plants they cannot survive without it The green pigment in the leaves of grass is called chlorophyll It collects the sunlight and generates energy which the plant uses to grow and live Without sunlight a lawn will struggle and weaken allowing weeds and moss to take over It is possible to buy seed mixes with shade tolerant species of grasses these will perform better in light shade than other varieties Moss is a common problem in UK lawns It thrives in damp cool conditions and has remarkably high drought tolerance Moss requires little nutrition making it easily able to take over the whole lawn when conditions cause the grass to weaken A mossy lawn could be due to many factors including poor drainage acidic soil poor nutrition too much shade and poor air circulation Products containing Iron Fe will discourage moss from spreading and annual scarification of the lawn will allow grass to grow back Want to learn more Find out more about fertilisers and lawn nutrition on the GreenBest Academy Explore our library of webinars and video courses available online now Greenbestacademy co uk 9

Choosing the right fertiliser Spring Spring is the time to apply high nitrogen fertiliser for lush green growth A fertiliser that is 20 25 nitrogen N is ideal Choose one with a high percentage of slow or controlled release nitrogen to prevent excessive growth and keep the lawn green up until the next treatment SmartLawn Ultimate is the ideal spring fertiliser check it out on page 14 Autumn Applying a suitable fertiliser in autumn will help prepare the lawn for winter It should not be high in nitrogen 5 15 N and should have a good amount of potassium 10 20 K as this will help the roots to develop A granular feed is necessary after an autumn scarification to make sure the lawn thickens up before the winter Our customers love SmartLawn AutumnGreen see why on page 18 Moss Control Products containing high levels of iron Fe are commonly used for their moss blackening properties which can help with moss control Beware though products containing Fe will cause orange staining on patios driveways and fencing which is difficult to remove We have granular and liquid options for moss blackening two of our most popular are Black Green page 22 and Liquid Iron page 24 Health Boost Lawns often need a little health boost to improve their appearance especially if the summer has been very dry or if the lawn is undergoing a renovation programme Biostimulants can really help improve the grass and soil health We have two very popular biostimulants in the SmartLawn range Check out Seaweed Extract on page 33 and ONYX Liquid on page 32 10 Summer In summer you can save time money and worry by applying a non scorch fertiliser that does not need to be watered in Organic material and biostimulants e g seaweed extract can also be applied to increase drought tolerance keeping the lawn greener for longer and helping it recover quicker SmartLawn DroughtSafe is the top choice for lawn care professionals in the summer months find out more on page 16 Winter Keep nitrogen levels low max 6 N as the temperature drops as too much will cause soft growth that is susceptible to disease Due to the low soil temperature the lawn will often become dormant so any fertiliser applied should be low in all nutrients SmartLawn First Last is great for low input treatments in winter find out more on page 20 New Lawns New lawns will establish faster and more successfully with an application of fertiliser Apply a high phosphorus feed before seeding or under new turf to support the new growth Encourage customers to water new lawns until established to increase the chance of success SmartLawn SeedStarter is designed for use alongside seeding see why on page 26 Extended feeding If you can only visit the lawn two or three times a year you will need a feed with at least 6 months longevity and one that is temperature controlled It should be at least 25 nitrogen to ensure the feed is effective for the whole 6 months We have designed SmartLawn Stretch for this exact use find out more about it on page 28

Granule Size Granule size is often referred to as SGN or particle size The granule size of a product relates to the size of each granule in the fertiliser Many SmartLawn fertilisers are available in a choice of two granule sizes allowing you to choose the one that suits your needs There is no need to worry about the height at which the lawn will be mown both sizes are suitable for any domestic lawn 1 2 Mini mm Grade 2 3 Lawn mm Grade Good coverage even at low application rates More particles per square metre mean this product is less likely to cause speckling when applied at lower application rates Quick to dissolve Smaller granules dissolve quicker and do not hang around on the surface for as long Fast release nutrients will be available to the plant quicker Low visibility after application Small particle size allows the product to settle discreetly at soil level out of view Easy to apply Visible granules help you avoid a patchy lawn by being able to see where the product has and hasn t already been applied Covers large areas quickly Larger heavier granules allow a wider spread as the granules will fly a greater distance High visibility after application Customers can see the product on the lawn and feel assured that a treatment has been carried out Spreader Settings Where available spreader settings for each product will appear on the product label Product Type Fast Release e g First Last Controlled Release e g DroughtSafe Granule Size Mini Grade 1 2 mm Lawn Grade 2 3 mm Mini Grade 1 2 mm Lawn Grade 2 3 mm EarthWay Spreader 16 19 17 18 Accupro 2000 or SR 1 4 O 4 S 4 P 4 R Suggested spreader settings for 25 35 g m2 or 250 350 kg ha single pass full rate The above settings are for guidance only Effective application rate will vary depending on many factors including walking speed spreader upkeep and weather conditions 12

Healthy looking lush growth that won t require excessive mowing We know that your customers expect to see a difference after treatment but they don t want to be mowing the lawn excessively because of it Ultimate is designed to give maximum impact without causing excessive growth The Nutrilong V90 in this blend will feed the grass slowly over the full 3 months until you return for the next treatment Available granule sizes 2 3 1 2 mm mm Product features Ideal for use after scarification Magnesium for improved colour Calcium for disease resistance Contains fast slow release nitrogen Non staining Nutrient spotlight Nitrogen Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for grass growth Nitrogen can be fixed naturally in the soil but it is a slow process We remove lots of nitrogen when we mow and put the clippings in the compost bin To maintain a lush healthy weed free lawn regular nitrogen fertilisers are must Nitrogen can be applied in higher quantities in the spring and summer However in the winter months it is advisable to use low nitrogen feeds as new growth in cold temperatures weakens easily in frost and will be susceptible to disease To avoid polluting our environment it is important that we do not apply too much nitrogen to lawns Please follow label recommendations for application rates and clean up spillages promptly 15

Non scorch 3 MONTHS DroughtSafeTM 19 3 9 100 of N from Nutrilong V90 and ONYX Our best selling summer lawn fertiliser for use on any domestic lawn DroughtSafe is formulated for application in the summer when high temperatures and lack of rainfall prevent the application of other fertilisers The coated nitrogen Nutrilong V90 allows for slow and steady release once the rain returns The organic component ONYX has stress relieving and biostimulant properties to help keep the lawn greener for longer during periods of drought Application Rate 25 35 g m2 250 350 kg ha Unit Size 20 kg Unit Coverage 570 800 m2 Typical Analysis Nitrogen N Phosphorus P2O5 Potassium K2O 19 3 1 3 P 9 7 5 K Application information Since DroughtSafe is formulated without any fast release nitrogen the nitrogen release pattern is eventually distributed throughout the 3 month period DroughtSafe can be applied at any time in the spring or summer It can also be applied in drought conditions and does not need to be watered in Main Application Period JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC check check check 16

The perfect combination of mineral and organic fertiliser Since DroughtSafe fertiliser is formulated without any fast release nitrogen the nutrient release pattern is evenly distributed throughout the 3 month period The coated nitrogen Nutrilong V90 allows for slow release once the rain returns DroughtSafe is made with our unique granular biostimulant ONYX The high level of amino acids in the material provides relief to stressed out lawns It also nurtures the beneficial soil microbes which helps keep the lawn strong and healthy all through the year Available granule sizes 2 3 1 2 mm mm Drought in lawns It s worth remembering that no fertiliser can stop a lawn going brown due to drought stress Even the healthiest of lawns will go into a dormant period if no water is available DroughtSafe is formulated to protect lawns from fertiliser scorch and enable fast green up when the rain returns Product features Safe to apply in drought conditions 100 controlled growth Provides relief for heat and drought stressed lawns What causes scorching Scorching of a lawn occurs when high levels of salty fertiliser are applied to the leaves or soil The salty fertiliser draws moisture out of the plant through the leaves or roots In the summer this problem is amplified because water is already evaporating at a high rate Drought stressed lawns lose their colour and may go brown whilst they go into dormancy waiting for the rain to return In severe cases the plants may die The traditional way of avoiding scorched lawns is to apply fertiliser products when rain is expected or if available to artificially irrigate the lawn with a hose or sprinkler system This is not always suitable as there may be periods of time when no work can be carried out and no money earned DroughtSafe is ideal in this situation as it will not cause scorch even in drought conditions 17

After scarification and aeration Autumn is a great time of year for scarification and aeration but without an application of fertiliser afterwards the lawn may be at risk of looking thin and weak during winter Applying a balanced fertiliser such as AutumnGreen encourages the lawn to thicken up in time for the colder months without causing too much excess growth The extra magnesium helps improve the colour of the lawn without the chance of staining that is associated with iron products Available granule sizes 2 3 1 2 mm mm Leaves damage lawns Leaves provide the perfect conditions for bacterial and fungal diseases to attack They also cause the lawn to turn yellow and create favourable conditions for moss to thrive Encourage your customers to clear leaves as often as possible Product features Contains fast and controlled release nitrogen Added magnesium for green up Can also be used in early spring Nutrient spotlight Potassium High potassium fertilisers are traditionally applied in the autumn to prepare the lawn for the harsh winter months ahead This is because potassium helps to increase cold tolerance and disease resistance However potassium is a vital nutrient for lawns and is required all year round It helps a lawn to green up and higher levels will not cause excessive growth Potassium also helps increase drought tolerance this is why we include it in our spring and summer fertilisers too 19

Liquid Iron Treatments Iron is essential in the production of chlorophyll the pigment that makes lawns green When applied to lawns as a liquid it quickly improves their colour This makes it perfect for winter treatments when the application of other fertilisers is discouraged Liquid applications of iron are favoured by many lawn care technicians due to their ease of use and ability to strictly control coverage thus preventing application to hard surfaces which can lead to staining The following products can be applied any time of year except when in drought conditions An improvement in colour can often be seen within hours of application Did you know On lawns where the soil is acidic or suffering from compaction liquid applications of iron sulphate are better suited than granular applications Liquid Iron 20 L 6 Fe 1 Mn 2 N w v SmartLawn s liquid iron offers an easy option for winter treatments The added manganese Mn and nitrogen N help to further improve the green up response Simply add the required amount to your knapsack fill with water and start spraying No dissolving required For green up 300 ml per 100 m2 30 L ha Maximum 5 L water per 100 m2 For green up blackening 900 ml per 100 m2 90 L ha Maximum 5 L water per 100 m2 1 x 20 L will treat up to 6 600 m2 Warning Products containing iron Fe will cause staining if applied to hard surfaces such as pathways and decking 24

Soluble 20 Iron 20 kg 20 Fe 32 SO3 SmartLawn soluble iron is made from iron sulphate heptahydrate It offers excellent value for money and it dissolves easily in cold water SmartLawn Soluble Iron is a blue green crystalline powder Warning Products containing iron Fe will cause staining if applied to hard surfaces such as pathways and decking For green up 80 100 g per 100 m2 8 10 kg ha Maximum 5 L water per 100 m2 For green up blackening 240 320 g per 100 m2 24 32 kg ha Maximum 5 L water per 100 m2 1 x 20 kg will treat up to 25 000 m2 2 5 hectares Tank Mixing It is possible to tank mix most of our nutritional liquid products together but we would always advise carrying out a small scale test first Dilute the products as per recommendations and mix them together in a small clear container an empty jam jar works well Leave the container to stand for at least 24 hours in a cool place If any material has fallen out of solution after this time then the products are not compatible and tank mixing is not advised We do not recommend mixing any of our products with plant protection chemicals such as herbicides or fungicides Nutrient spotlight Iron Iron is a micronutrient that is essential for chlorophyll production in plants Applying iron to the lawn causes a quick green up response without causing extra growth This makes it suitable for use as a winter lawn treatment High applications of iron causes moss to blacken Unfortunately iron products do rust when exposed to air and water and will cause staining if left on stone and wood For this reason they should not be used to treat moss on hard surfaces If you have trouble controlling spread of iron granules onto hard surfaces then try using a liquid product instead 25

Seeding a new lawn There are occasions when you may need to start a new lawn from scratch Seeding fertilisers such as SeedStarter are designed to speed up establishment and give the best start to the new lawn Apply the fertiliser after seeding or as soon as possible after germination do not be tempted to exceed the recommended application rate as this could prevent healthy growth To further improve speed of establishment top dress the lawn with compost or a specialty top dressing The area can be temporarily covered with secured fleece to speed up germination if needed Traffic on the new lawn should be avoided until it is fully established Mowing can begin when the lawn reaches a height of 5 cm but care should be taken as the grass will still be delicate for some time Once the lawn is fully established you should then apply a seasonal fertiliser to the lawn to continue healthy growth Overseeding After scarification or lawn renovation you may find that the lawn is looking a little thin The best solution for this is to apply a lawn seed to the lawn to fill in the gaps Take the opportunity to use a seed species that is more suited to the lawn for example if the lawn is quite shaded then a shade tolerant mix will do well Changing the mix of species in the lawn is the ideal way to make your job easier in the long term Apply SeedStarter after the seed to support healthy development of seedlings and get the lawn looking thick again in no time Nutrient spotlight Phosphorus Phosphorus is required in smaller quantities than nitrogen and potassium but it still plays an important part in the health of the lawn Among other roles phosphorus is involved in plant growth and development making it especially important for new lawns High phosphorus fertiliser is often used in agriculture for seed production It is not necessary to apply excessive amounts of phosphorus to established lawns As phosphorus moves very slowly in the soil we advise low application levels at least twice per year If you are starting a lawn from scratch working a high phosphorus fertiliser into the top 10 cm of soil will benefit the lawn for years to come 27

Wetting Agent Professional water management for domestic lawns Wetting Agents Wetters are surfactants They reduce the surface tension of water helping it to spread further and wet surfaces A wetting agent enables water to penetrate soil faster moving it away from the sward and deeper into the rootzone Our wetting agents have been developed for use on all types of grass including domestic lawns They are primarily designed to help prevent the occurrence of localised dry patch LDP which can inhibit healthy grass growth in spring and summer months SmartLawn Wetting Agent Liquid wetting agent This liquid wetting agent is applied with a knapsack sprayer Apply with plenty of water or apply just before rain to ensure the product is washed evenly and thoroughly into the soil For best results throughout the summer it is recommended that you start applications in the early spring as a preventative measure This product can be tank mixed with other fertilisers and chemicals but we recommend you check compatibility with a jam jar test prior to use Application Rate 2 5 ml m2 Unit Size 1 L or 5 L Unit Coverage 1 L 200 500 m2 5 L 0 1 0 5 hectares Monthly programme Curative treatment Initial application 200 400 ml per 100 m2 in 5 10 L of water Subsequent monthly applications if needed 100 200 ml per 100 m2 in 5 10 L of water Weekly watering recommended 90 Day Programme Preventative treatment Initial application 500 ml per 100 m2 in 5 10 L of water Subsequent application 90 days later if needed 500 ml per 100 m2 in 5 10 L of water Main Application Period JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC 30 check check check check check check

SATUGRAN Granular wetting agent SATUGRAN is a granular non ionic wetting agent with a zeolite carrier It is based on the same technology as our liquid SmartLawn Wetting Agent and offers the same benefits Being a granular product SATUGRAN is super easy to apply SATUGRAN does not need to be watered in but will not benefit the lawn until the active ingredient is washed into the soil For best results apply in spring as a preventative measure Repeat application 90 days later to maintain water management through the summer If you are planning to apply SATUGRAN alongside another granular SmartLawn fertiliser apply in separate passes and use SATUGRAN first SATUGRAN is manufactured by GreenBest and packaged in Velvit branded bags Available granule size 1 2 mm Application Rate 20 30 g m2 200 300 kg ha Unit Size 20 kg Unit Coverage 660 1 000 m2 Main Application Period JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC check check check check check check Product features Minimises appearance of dry patch in summer Ensures quick and even uptake of rainwater Long lasting residual effect No need to water in Non scorch What is localised dry patch Localised dry patch LDP is a common problem usually caused by biological processes in the soil for example Fairy Ring fungi Over time these processes cause a build up of waxy organic material on soil particles and this makes them strongly hydrophobic The result is patches of lawn that are difficult to wet and in the summer large brown patches where the grass is suffering from severe drought stress Wetting agents are designed to eliminate hydrophobic conditions and allow water to spread evenly and quickly through the soil again To tackle this problem in the long term we recommend regular spiking and scarification This will improve soil conditions and stimulate soil bacteria to reverse the problem 31

Warning Products containing iron Fe will cause staining if applied to hard surfaces such as pathways and decking Iron Stain Removal Fertilisers containing iron are valuable to the lawn care industry They are easy to source relatively safe to use and very effective Unfortunately they can cause orange brown staining to occur on hard surfaces such as decking and paving These stains are often quite difficult to remove and can affect relationships with your customers Due to the huge range of hard surface materials used in modern gardens and their differences in porosity texture and stability there is no cure all for iron stains Results from each cleaning method will vary The generally accepted approach is to try a few methods until you find something that works It is always recommended that you test each remedy on a hidden area first Prevention Spray liquids away from hard surfaces and take note of wind direction and speed Immediately rinse liquid iron products from hard surfaces with plenty of clean water Brush blow granular products off hard surfaces after application Request that your customer does not mow or walk on lawn for 1 2 days after application Mechanical Vigorous scrubbing may help to remove the worst of the staining Acids and Chemicals A variety of acids have been known to help They must be allowed to react for a few minutes before scrubbing and rinsing well A number of repeat applications may be required Fresh Lemon Juice Citric acid Spirit Vinegar Acetic acid Stain removal products such as Lithofin Bero or Lithofin Rust Ex always read the product information and label before use 34 Always read the product information and label before use
