Meet TheShowaltersA message from the familyThe Twila Showalter Supportive Care Clinic provides vital resources for cancer patients and theirfamilies, offering emotional support, financial assistance, and symptom management—carethat often goes beyond what traditional treatments can provide. We understand firsthand howimportant this support is. After losing a loved one to cancer, we know how crucial it is to helpfamilies cope with the invisible burdens that remain long after the treatment ends.Since Twila’s passing in December 2017, ourfamily has channeled our grief into action, uniting the community through sports tosupport others who are facing cancer. Throughour Annual Basketball and Golf Tournaments,we’ve raised over $224,000, funding thecreation of the Twila Showalter Supportive CareClinic at the Hahn Cancer Center. Our family has been actively involved in every step of planning and organizing these events. From choosing the venues to reaching out to sponsors, we are committed to ensuring that theseevents not only honor Twila’s legacy but also help those who are in the fight today.By sponsoring these events, you are investing in the future of cancer care and helping survivorsand their families find the support they need. Cancer changes everything. The physical toll, the emotional weight, the uncertainty—patients and families carry a burden that medicine alone cannot lift. Managing pain, easing symptoms, and providing emotional and practical support can make all thedifference. That’s why we’re establishing the Twila Showalter Supportive Care Clinic, aprogram of the Hahn Cancer Center —to ensure patients and families have the care theyneed, when they need it.Supportive Care at Hahn Cancer Center: In the Shenandoah Valley, cancer presents a particularly severechallenge. Our region’s mortality rate stands at 210.6 per 100,000—significantly higher than the state average of 179.8.These elevated rates place a disproportionate burden on ourfamilies, friends, and neighbors—making the need for integrated,whole-person care more urgent than ever.Supporting survivors in our region isn’t just compassionate—it’scritical.Cancer hitsharder hereat home.Let's work togetherto keep making apositive impact.Because Cancer Care Should BeMore Than TreatmentOur community’s cancer mortality rate is 5% higher than the state average. That’s morelives lost, more families impacted, more urgency to act. We can change this. Byproviding advanced symptom management, emotional and spiritual support, andcoordinated care, we can help patients live better and longer. As an oncologist, I’ve spent 26 years walking this journey withpatients. I’ve seen firsthand how treating the whole person –not just the disease – helps people live fully, even in the faceof serious illness. Heather Morgan , MDHahn Cancer CenterYour sponsorship ensures that every patient—no mattertheir diagnosis—receives the relief, support, and guidancethey deserve. Because cancer care is about more thantreatment—it’s about life.

WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT?A wave of cancer survivorship is coming More people under 50 are beingdiagnosed with cancer, and they have decades of life ahead ofthem. By 2030, more than 22 million cancer survivors will be living in the U.S.—26 million by 2040. Yet only 1 in 3 receives a care plan to address their long-term needs. Without intentional support, millions will be left to navigate life after cancer on their own. It’s common for the joy of remission to beshadowed by constant worry—everyache, every appointment carries theweight of ‘what if’.40% of cancer patientsexperience significantchallenges in their work andsocial lives due to ongoinghealth issues. Moving on istougher than anticipated.60-70% of cancer patientsexperience physical orpsychological issues such aspain, fatigue, anxiety, depression, PTSD andheightened emotional distressduring and after treatment. 1 in 5 cancer patients report that their quality of life is significantly affected by thelong-term effects of treatment. Side effects can linger or surface years later. 1 in 3 cancer patients report financial hardship, even with insurancecoverage. Copays, lost wages, and non-medical expenses add up—quietlyeroding stability long after treatment ends. The cost of surviving cancer isoften invisible.
