The Birth of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, IncorporatedA Story of Vision and ChangeIn 1913, a visionary group of women at Howard University sought to forge a new path. Asmembers of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, they recognized the need for agreater focus on public service and the advancement of women. United by a sharedpurpose, these 22 trailblazing women founded Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated—asisterhood dedicated to amplifying voices, driving meaningful change, and servingcommunities with unwavering commitment.A Bold First Step In March 1913, this vision transformed into action. The Founders of Delta Sigma Theta madetheir first public act by participating in the historic Women’s Suffrage March in Washington,D.C. With boldness and grace, they joined thousands of others advocating for women’s rightto vote, sending a powerful message about their commitment to equality and justice.Formalizing the Mission As their movement grew, so did their resolve to create a lasting legacy. In 1930, Delta SigmaTheta was officially incorporated, solidifying their commitment to sisterhood, academicexcellence, and public service. Incorporation not only provided the legal framework for theSorority but also reinforced its mission to be a leading force for change. The 22 women whoestablished Delta Sigma Theta were trailblazers, who have cultivated hope and inspirationfor generations to come. Their legacy of resilience and service continues to shape the fabricof our Sorority and the communities in which we serve.A Legacy of Impact What began as a bold vision in 1913 has since become a global sisterhood of over 350,000members. Delta Sigma Theta remains a leading advocate for education, social justice, andpublic service, embodying the principles that our Founders held dear. The story of these 22women is a testament to the power of unity, courage, and determination.
