keynote speakerTàhirih MotazedianFriday, March 1st - 5PMHillside Auditorium 206 Music as Therapy, Music as Pathology: The NeverEnding StoryAbstract: As long as music has existed, humans have both feared and revered its power.Throughout time and across the globe, music has been hailed as a potent tool for mental, physical, and spiritual healing as well as societal unification. Simultaneously, music hasalso been pathologized as a dangerous weapon that can damage minds, bodies, morality, and destroy society. Music has always been harnessed for wildly opposing agendas, andevery generation repeats the same patterns, always thinking they are unique to the musicof the time. This talk explores the bizarre and complex history of how humans perceivemusic as a tool for both harming and healing, tracing both threads from their historicalorigins through the present day. Táhirih Motazedian is an assistant professor of music theory atVassar College. She has a PhD in music theory from Yale University, and her book, Key Constellations: Interpreting Tonality in Film, waspublished in 2023 by University of California Press. Before becominga music theorist, Táhirih worked for NASA as a planetary scientistand mission operations specialist, working on the Apollo, Genesis, and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter missions. She got her start inresearch at the Arkansas Center for Space and Planetary Sciences.
