Alexander Calder is one of the most well known American contemporary artists His large scale public sculptures are visible in cities around the world Calder s poetic arrangements of boldly colored shapes and lines have become iconic in the history of American Art Modernism and 20th Century contemporary art Calder was born in 1898 to artist parents his mother was a painter and his father was a sculptor The family lived in philadelphia pennsylvania oracle Arizona and pasadena California When Calder was a teenager they settled back in pennsylvania He did not initially set out to be an artist and in 1919 enrolled at the Stevens institute of Technology He earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked in a variety of different jobs in 1923 Calder joined the Art Students league in new York City as a student of John Sloan guy pene du Bois and Boardman robinson in 1926 Calder moved to paris to pursue his career as an artist He stayed on for seven years surrounded by other leading avant garde artists including piet Mondrian Jean Arp and Marcel Duchamp He started making wire sculptures and by 1932 his first mobile was exhibited in the united States one year later Calder returned to the States and purchased a home in roxbury Connecticut where he lived for the rest of his life He was remarkably productive after the war and in 1943 the Museum of Modern Art MoMA in new York City hosted a retrospective of his work Calder continued to exhibit in france and in 1950 he was the subject of yet another retrospective at galerie Maeght The gallery became his exclusive parisian dealer representing Calder for over 26 years in 1968 galerie Maeght hosted an exhibition of works by Calder titled fl ches The frontispiece for the exhibition featured a similar composition to the present lot fleurs d t The bold use of red and black and the pure geometric abstraction is consistent with other works from the period He had another exhibition of gouaches and drawings at perls gallery the same year in 1976 the Whitney Museum of American Art in new York City opened Calder s universe a comprehensive retrospective of his prolific career Just a few weeks later Calder died at seventy eight ending one of the most successful and innovative artistic careers of the twentieth century 18

Farm life was all I knew for the first 20 years of my life In painting these canvases I felt again the vastness of endless skies experienced again the penetrating cold of Nebraska winters lived again as farmers live in spirit I am very much a farmer Dale nichols Dale nichols was born in rural David City nebraska in 1904 His early life had a profound influence on his paintings which centered on the recreations of the farm life The search for pure American Art was growing and the public was interested in scenes of American life nichols emerged as an artist when regionalism and rural regionalism was growing as a collecting genre His paintings are classified as a succession from grant Wood Thomas Hart Benton and John Stuart Curry nichols studied in Chicago at the Academy of fine Arts and the Art institute with Carl Wentz He became a successful illustrator watercolorist designer writer lecturer block printer and painter from 1942 1948 he succeeded grant Wood as art editor of the Encyclopedia Britannica During his career he had eighteen solo exhibitions and exhibited in more that eighty regional and national exhibitions The present painting dated 1967 comes from a desirable period in the artists career Mid Nation W inter is a typical scene by nichols featuring a Midwestern farmhose barn and windmill it is among the finest of his snowscenes to come to market in recent history American collector s in the 1930s looked to buy rural regionalist art to capture the disappearing idyllic agricultural lifestyle nichols work has been avidly collected and is represented in numerous public and private collections throughout the country including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in new York 24

Daniel ralph Celentano is considered an important American Scene or regionalist artist alongside contemporaries Thomas Hart Benton grant Wood and John Steuart Curry These artists celebrated rural life in America by realistically depicting everyday subjects He is also aligned with contemporary Social realism for his depictions of urban life from the Manhattan neighborhood where he grew up Celentano was born in new York City in 1902 to neapolitan immigrants He was the fifth of fifteen children The family lived in what was once called italian Harlem on the upper East Side Many of Celentano s paintings depict street scenes and personalities from this neighborhood At the age of 12 Celentano became Thomas Hart Benton s first and youngest student He assisted Benton with the execution of several murals and the two remained lifelong friends By the time he was 16 Celentano had studied at the Cape Cod School of Art under Charles W Hawthorne at the new York School of fine and Applied Arts with Howard giles and at the national Academy of Design He first exhibited his work in 1930 at Alfred Stieglitz s opportunity gallery following the success of this show Celentano s works were exhibited in other museum exhibitions including those at the Corcoran gallery of Art The pennsylvania Academy of fine Arts The Whitney Museum of American Art the Brooklyn Museum the Detroit institute of Art and the Carnegie institute in 1938 he had his first one man show at the Maynard Walker s gallery in new York Walker represented many regionalist artists during the 1930s and 1940s including John Steurt Curry The present canvas depicts a regionalist agrarian scene of African American farmers reaping the harvest A partial label on the reverse indicates this work was exhibted at the Carnegie institute s interntaional Exhibition in 1943 According the record of the exhibtions that year Celentano exhibted a work titled Homage probably the artist conceived the composition as an Homage to his teacher Thomas Hart Benton in the 1920s Benton visited Arkansas Mississippi Alabama and georgia where he sketched studies from life in the 30s and 40s he revisited these sketches for the A merican T oday mural and for a series of paintings depicting cotton pickers Celentano would have been familiar with the paintings and the sketches from working with Benton 26

guy C Wiggins is one of the most iconic new York City impressionist painters His snowy scenes of the city have captured audiences since the 1920s Wiggins was a successful and prolific artist He operated an art school in old lyme Connecticut and divided his time between there and new York City Born in Brooklyn new York in 1883 Wiggins started his formal training in architecture By 1919 however he had transferred to the national Academy of Design to study painting under the tutelage of William Merritt Chase and robert Henri Henri encouraged his students to look to the streets of Manhattan for subjects from everyday life Wiggins remmebering his early architectural training took to cityscapes and depicting new York City s famous architecture He quickly established a national reputation and by age 20 his work was included in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in new York City Wiggins father Carleton Wiggins was a painter in the Barbizon style The Wiggins family would spend their summers in old lyme and in 1915 the family relocated there permanently Carleton became an active member of the old lyme Art Association however his style remained predominantly tonalist guy on the other hand learned from the artists in old lyme He absorbed their style of impressionism employing a bright color palette and American painting techniques Wiggins was an active member of the national Academy of Design elected a full academician in 1919 He exhibited regularly with the old lyme artists and earned prizes for his work from the Connecticut Academy of fine Arts the Salmagundi Club and the Art Club of philadelphia in 1917 he won the prestigious norman Wait Harris Bronze Medal from the Art institute of Chicago Throughout his life Wiggins would continue to paint scenes of new York City as a favored subject in late 1930s and 40s he maintained a studio in new York overlooking Washington Square park The present canvas is a quality example of one of his Washington Square paintings with bright white snow and bustling pedestrians 28

raoul Dufy was born in le Havre normandy where he first attended art school There he became friends with painter othon friesz and the two studied the works of Eugene Boudin in the museum of la Havre in 1900 Dufy received a grant to study at the Ecole nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in paris in paris he studied at the studio of leon Bonnat He became familiar with the works of the impressionists but was particularly attracted to Henri Matisse and fauvism He saw Matisse s Luxe C alme et V o lupte at the Salon des independants in 1905 and was deeply impressed initially Dufy s work emulated the fauvist style After the war he developed his own unique style with pure color free flowing lines and varying perspectives The present example nature Morte au Jardin comes from a series of works Dufy did of this scene depicting a still life composition in front of a garden The varying perspectives suggest a nearby table top or an interior scene with a window looking out in 1935 arts patron Alice Warder garrett purchased 10 watercolors from Dufy including a watercolor from the nature Morte au Jardin series garrett s collection of Dufy s which formed the Evergreen Museum and library at John s Hopkins was exhibited in 2007 A review noted Evergreen s Dufy paintings all made during the period between the two World Wars chronicle a prolific period of stylistic growth when the artist s thorough academic training experiments with impressionism and fauvism and experiences in book illustration and textile design coalesced into a fully mature a highly personal style of supple line limpid color and saturated light Heather Egan Stalfort A Celebration of raoul Dufy Johns Hopkins university Museum 2007 Dufy was highly prolific and became best known for his scenes of Mediterranean landscapes sea goddesses italian ruins and lighthearted views of leisure and spectacle His paintings captured 20th french living and appealed to both European and American collectors Time Magazine called Dufy the granddaddy of modern chic after his visit to America in 1950 1951 34

A s for the horse I really like this animal as much for its beauty as for the harmony that it has with nature In nature the horse gives a sense of scale It provides interesting proportions with the sea and the sky for example I love life and horses with their forms and their ardour delight and intrigue me Andre Brasilier s dreamy surreal canvases have appealed to international audiences for decades Drawing from modern European art movements and Japanese prints Brasilier has achieved his own widely appealing unique style often inspired by music Brasilier uses color to create a harmony on the canvas The surreal landscapes evoke a peaceful dreamy place far away from the trivial problems of everyday life Brasilier was born in Anjou france the son of two painters in 1949 he began his formal artistic education at the Ecole nationale des Beaux Arts in paris where he studied under Maurice Briancon in 1952 he was awarded a prix florence Blumenthal and in 1953 he was awarded a grand prix de rome following his trip to rome he spent three years living at the Villa di Medici sponsored by the french Academy When he returned to paris he exhibited in major group shows throughout the 1950s and 60s He also had several independent exhibitions at notable galleries in france and at David B findlay gallery in new York Brasilier continues to have a very successful artistic career with active collector s in America Europea and Japan When asked why his work is particularly appealing to a Japanese audience Brasileir noted his preference for simplicity and his attention to composition Brasilier has been the subject of two major retrospectives at the State Hermitage Museum in Saint petersburg 2005 and at the Museum Haus ludwig fur Kunstausstellungen Saarolis in germany 2007 His works are in museums and private collections worldwide including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the State Hermitage Museum 38

georges d Espagnat was born in Melun france in 1870 His family moved to paris when he was eighteen D Espagnat was independent from the start rejecting traditional artistic education at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and choosing instead classes at the Academie Colarossi He spent most of his time at the louvre drawing from the works of Delacroix rembrandt and rubens in 1890 he travelled to italy to see firsthand Venetian masterworks by Titian and Tintoretto in 1891 D Espagnat exhibited his work for the first time at the Salon des refusees He would later exhibit at the Salon of the Societe nationale and the Salon des independents All of these venues were known for their avant garde exhibitions and openness to modern trends in 1895 he participated in his first solo exhibition at the galerie Durand ruel in paris where he continued to exhibit thorughout his life in 1902 he would have a solo exhibition at Durandruel in new York City in 1903 D Espagnat together with architecht frantz Jourdain and critic ivanhoe rambosson founded the Salon d Autumne The Salon d Autumne promoted the work of young modern artists and hosted retrospectives of modern artsits whose work had been rejected in the second half of the 19th century D Espagnat was closely acquainted with many of the impressionists and postimpressionists including renior Vuillard Andre Bonnard and Denis from 1900 1910 he visited renoir on numerous occasions in the Cote d Azur their friendship and artistic exchage is well documented le repos probably dates to the early 1900s when D Espagnat was particularly influenced by renior and other late impressionists The patterened interior flatness and dark outlines reflect works by contemporary initimist painters Vuillard and Bonnard The softness and dreamy restful pose of the woman alludes to renoir s figures D Espagnat works are collected in numerous museums and public collections including the Museum of fine Arts Boston the Mus e royal des Beaux Arts Brussels the Metropolitan Museum of Art new York the Art institute Chicago indianapolis Museum of Art the pushkin Museum Moscow the Mus e d orsay the Mus e d Art Moderne Mus e Eug ne Delacroix Bibliotheque nationale and palais de l institut paris Mus e de l Annonciade Saint Tropez Mus e d Art Moderne et Contemporain Strasbourg Mus e lambinet Versailles Mueso Thyssen Bornemisza Madrid and the national Museum of Western Art Tokyo The robert lehman Collection at the Metropolitan Museum in new York City contains more paintings by georges D Espagnat than any other 19th or 20th century artist 54

lovell Birge Harrison trained with some of the best artists of the day and became an influential teacher and co founder of the Art Students league Summer School in Woodstock new York As a painter he is best known for his tonalist landscapes and cityscapes of Quebec and new York City Art historian David Adams Cleveland noted of Harrison perhaps no painter of his generation was able to combine such finesse of design acuity of execution and depth of emotion The present canvas is a masterwork by the artist synthesizing his understanding of Tonalism and impressionism in Bryant Park at Evening New Y ork Harrison captures a rare moment of quiet in the city The cool serene scene is brought to life with the warm glow from the lights of the El and in the apartment windows Harisson captures the period architecture of new York City drawing the viewer into the painting as if one were walking on the sidewalk The beautifully painted sky above with flashes of orange hints at the coming sun after the storm Harrison was born in philadelphia in 1854 His father was a wealthy and cultured man who appreciated the arts but wanted his children to pursue more lucrative careers Despite this Harrison enrolled at the philadelphia Sketch Club under the tutelage of Thomas Eakins and the pennsylvania Academy of fine Arts At the pAfA in 1876 he met John Singer Sargeant who advised Harrison to pursue studies under Carolus Duran in parris Harrison left for paris that year and studied with Carolus Duran Jules Bastien lepage and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts The french government recognized Harrison by purchasing one of his paintings from the Salon in 1881 The painting November was among the first American paintings purchased by france While abroad Harrison travelled extensively in france and in Europe and to india Australia Asia and Africa He did illustrations for Scribner s C entury and Harper s magazines When he retured to the united States he moved first to California After the death of his first wife Eleanor ritchie he moved back to the east coast in 1904 he met ralph Whitehead and worked as an instructor at Byrdcliffe He soon moved to nearby Woodstock and eventually became the head of the Woodstock Art Colony Harrison taught his students what he valued in his own paintings soft lighting muted colors and emotion Harrison s paintings are in numerous public and private collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum the national Academy Museum the fine Arts Museum of San francisco and the Musee d orsay 56

guy C Wiggins was born in Brooklyn new York in 1883 His father Carleton Wiggins was an accomplished landscape artist who enjoyed a successful career as an artist According to an article on the Wiggins family written in 2011 He Carleton Wiggins pressed a palette and paints into his young son s hands By age 4 guy Carleton Wiggins was churning out watercolors that foreshadowed a talent greater than his father s Ann farmer new York Times A family of painters is Having its Moment Jun 6 2011 Wiggins first studied architecture at Brooklyn polytechnic institute then left to pursue fine arts training at the national Academy of Design The architectural cityscape of new York City became his muse and he started painting famous buildings in an impressionistic style He once said if you want to sell paintings it helps if it s recognizable to many people He became highly successful in the 1920s and 30s selling views of new York City architecture particularly in the snow in 1912 he became the youngest artist represented in the Metropolitan Museum s collection with a painting titled Metropolitan Tower He painted the Executive Mansion from the White House lawn a painting that hung in president Eisenhower s office The great Depression took a toll on sales and Wiggins struggled in the years following the war He moved with his family permanently to Essex Connecticut and started the guy Wiggins Art School He became an active member of the old lyme Art Academy He started to paint landscapes however he continued to paint new York City as a preferred subject Wiggins legacy was preserved in the history of American Art and his works are included in numerous public and private collections including the Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford Connecticut the Metropolitan Museum of Art the Brooklyn Museum the national gallery in Washington D C and the Art institute of Chicago 58

An avid hunter and angler ogden Minton pleissner fluidly translated the sport into his art His most succesful compostions including the present example realistically depict the landscape and figures to evoke the action and feeling of the hunt As an artist he is best remembered for his realistic sporting scenes and his adept handling of watercolor pleissner painted in America Europe and Bermuda pleissner was born in Brooklyn in 1905 and took an interest in painting at a young age His parents encouraged his artistic endevours His father was intersted in arts and music and his mother was an accomplished violinist As an adolescent he studied at the Art Students league in Manhattan in the summer pleissner visited dude ranches and youth camps in DuBois Wyoming There he sketched the images of the American West landscapes animals native Americans and cowboys His experiences sketching outdoors would influence his later works painted en plein air As a young emerging artist pleissner initially struggled to find gallery representation His work was exhibited at Harlow MacDonald s fifth Avenue gallery where it sold well from then on he became a successful artist and his work is still highly sought after by collectors today in 1932 the Metropolitan Museum of Art purchased one of his paintings Backyards Brooklyn making him at the time the youngest artist represented in the collection During World War ii pleissner served as an artist illustrating for the united States Air force and life Magazine He used watercolors because they were a portable and quick drying medium This experience undoubtedly contributed his facility with watercolors and his aptitude for drawing figures in action After the War pleissner continued to paint using watercolor as a preferred medium pleissner excelled at illustrating sporting scenes As a sportsmen himself he knew the correct postures apparal and equipment He sketched on site and traveled extensively in search of new subjects and in pursuit of the sport His biographer peter Bergh noted one can always sense in pleissner s sporting pictures that he is paintng the things he likes to look at in the places he likes to be The present lot G rouse Hunt is a remarkable example of pleissner s adept handling of watercolor and his aptitude for depicting sporting scenes in the composition pleissner captures the fleeting moment when the grouse crosses the firing line The hunter his dog a short haired pointer and the grouse are frozen in those few suspenseful seconds the most exciting moment of the hunt 80
