INTRODUCTIONThe Stonycreek Valley has a long heritage of military servicestretching from the frontier rangers of the 1770s through today’smilitary personnel engaged in the Global War on Terrorism. The 134 service members pictured in this booklet represent but asmall part of that heritage. The faces of these veterans andactive-duty military will become familiar to us as these bannersfly above the streets of Shanksville and the Stonycreek Townshiproadways leading into Shanksville. They will remind us of theprice of freedom and the sacrifice of so many. We respect andhonor the memory of all who have served and those who continueto serve our country today. To see more images or to submit information about additionalservice members for inclusion in the community’s military servicevideo presentation, go to www.shanksvillesalutes.orgTABLE OF CONTENTSWORLD WAR I . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1WORLD WAR II . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2KOREAN WAR . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 16POST-KOREAN WAR . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 19COLD WAR ERA . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 19VIETNAM WAR . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 21PEACETIME . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 28GULF WAR . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 30GLOBAL WAR ON TERRORISM . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 31KILLED IN ACTION AND DIED NON-BATTLE . . . . . . . . . . . 35MILITARY BANNER PROJECT FAMILY CONNECTIONS 36
