Heathy Mouth Healthy You by Peter J O Connell Editorial and Research Associate You have to open your mouth to tell a story But an open mouth can tell a story without your uttering a single word The condition of your mouth and teeth tells a dentist a lot about your overall health The point of that story is healthy mouth healthy you and vice versa There is growing evidence that problems in your mouth can affect other parts of your body and your psychological outlook and social functioning Combating these problems begins with daily brushing and flossing rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash having a properly nutritious diet avoiding tobacco and going for regular dental checkups and cleanings Brushing and flossing and getting regular dental cleans checkups will help you to have a great looking smile brighter whiter looking teeth and fresh breath They are an important part in preventing gum disease and reducing your risk of tooth loss and dental problems Getting a regular professional cleaning will remove plaque tartar buildup and stains from your teeth And bear in mind Prevention is less expensive than cure An online article on WebMD points out that tooth decay gum disease cavities bad breath can affect your confidence self image and self And bear in mind Prevention is less expensive than cure esteem With a healthy mouth your quality of life is also bound to be better you can eat properly sleep better and concentrate with no aching teeth or mouth infections to distract you Connections Here are some connections of oral conditions to other major health issues Cardiovascular problems Numerous studies have indicated that heart disease blockages of blood vessels strokes and endocarditis might be linked to the inflammation and infections that oral bacteria can cause Dementia Poor oral health can increase your risk of dementia by a third The Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery Psychiatry reports that adults with gingivitis swollen bleeding gums perform worse on tests of memory and cognitive function than those with healthier gums and mouth Diabetes It has long been observed that people with diabetes are more prone than others to gum disease Now new studies suggest that there is a two way link Gum disease itself actually may contribute to diabetes through its effects on blood glucose control The Canadian Diabetes Association says that the host response to peridontal bacteria can increase insulin resistance and therefore blood glucose levels Lung infections People with disease affecting the gums and surrounding tissue have more bacteria breeding in their mouths Continued on page 10

Hence they are more likely to inhale germs that can lead to lung infections such as pneumonia and make pre existing lung problems worse Rheumatoid arthritis Research has found an association between gum disease and RA Experts say that the mechanism of destruction of connective tissue in both gum disease and RA is similar Advances Estimates are that over 30 million Americans are missing all teeth in one or both jaws Many millions more are missing at least some teeth Tooth loss can occur to people at various age levels but is a common occurrence as we grow older But there is no reason to live with the discomfort and embarrassment of tooth loss Dentures of course are removable dental appliances that replace missing teeth and are made to look and function like natural teeth Composed of plastic or porcelain dentures are prosthetic teeth that rest on the gums They can be removed at night or other times for cleaning Dentures provide a number of cosmetic and functional benefits but sometimes have problems of comfort and fit They may cause irritation and difficulty in chewing certain foods and even impede speaking clearly Bone loss however is probably the most detrimental consequence of missing teeth according to Chairside magazine Following tooth loss the bone regresses both horizontally and vertically If traditional dentures are worn the support and stability for BENEFITS OF IMPLANT SUPPORTED DENTURES Those who have acquired implant supported dentures may notice various benefits over traditional dentures For example it has been shown that as many as 75 of traditional denture wearers would have chosen implant treatment had they known about bone loss Benefits from implants include Enhanced ability to eat speak and smile attractively and to enjoy a more active and healthy lifestyle and social life Better fit and more comfort Restoration of facial structure A more natural and possibly younger look No need for dental adhesives to prevent dentures from becoming loose or falling out of the mouth No dissolution of the jawbone or wearing down of gums In fact possible stimulation of bone growth just as natural teeth do An improved attitude toward dental health in general All of these improvements regarding oral health emphasize the truth of the saying Healthy mouth healthy you the mouth and face may decrease with negative effects upon facial esthetics and self esteem But dentistry today is a field in constant development of new and improved techniques therapies and treatments One of the most dynamic areas of advance involves implants Implants may be advisable when a person has lost more than a few teeth but still has enough bone in the jaw to support the implants which resemble small screws and are made of titanium Each implant is inserted into the gums and jawbone through a small incision After this surgery the gums and bone will take three to seven months to grow in around the implant Once this process is completed a metal device is attached to the implants and custom made dentures are fabricated to be secured to that piece of hardware The implantsupported dentures have an acrylic base that looks like gums Porcelain or acrylic teeth that look like natural teeth are then attached to the base After the final dentures are in place their fit or appearance may be adjusted Jeffr John N ii U v www be

Higher Reverse Mortgage Limits for 2018 Beginning in January 2018 lending limits for government insured reverse mortgages have been increased allowing borrowers the opportunity to access more of their home equity than ever before The Federal Housing Administration FHA is required by the National Housing Act to set Single Family forward loan limits at 115 of median house prices subject to a floor and a ceiling on the limits The floor loan limit increased from 275 665 to 294 515 on January 1 2018 In high cost areas the FHA s loan limit ceiling increased to 679 650 up from its present level of 636 150 The vast majority of reverse mortgages are federally insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgages HECMs that are backed by the Federal Housing Administration These loans allow homeowners age 62 and older to convert a portion of their home equity into loan proceeds that can be used to supplement retirement spending So what do higher loan limits mean for reverse mortgage borrowers With the Maximum Claim Amount MCA now set at 679 650 for 2018 this amount will now be the highest possible loan limit that can be insured by FHA on a single HECM loan The Maximum Claim amount is the lesser of a home s appraised value or the maximum FHA lending limit This means that if your home is appraised at 700 000 your MCA under the HECM reverse mortgage program will be the max lending limit of 679 650 because this is the lesser of the two values But let s assume that your home was appraised for 500 000 In this scenario the MCA would be 500 000 rather than the max limit of 679 650 Understanding MCA is important because lenders consider this amount when determining how much reverse mortgage loan proceeds will be available to you also known as the principal limit Higher lending limits mean that some reverse mortgage borrowers can access a greater amount of home equity than in the past This is especially true for homeowners with properties valued above the former FHA HECM max lending limit of 636 150 In 2018 some positive things are surfacing The first meaningful loan limit change since 2009 has gone into effect increasing from 636 150 to 679 500 For borrowers with higher priced homes we have seen the reemergence of the Reverse Jumbo loan The existing jumbo program had been under utilized because it only benefited borrowers with homes valued at 1 5 million or more and it held a high rate The jumbo programs have been improved so that rates are lower and borrowers receive more money higher loan to value based on age Rates are everything Interest rates now have a direct impact on your available reverse mortgage benefit Taking out a reverse mortgage now before rates climb higher will yield you the most from your home s equity If you are short to close but have the funds to bring in now is the best time to do so and eliminate that mortgage payment If you would like to move and use a reverse mortgage for a new home purchase we can help you buy that new home without taking on a traditional mortgage or having to pay cash for the home A combination of cash and a reverse mortgage on the new home may be your perfect combination At Atlantic Home Loans we will look at your unique situation and devise a plan that suits your needs N Call me or email me anytime Cindy Cindy Perham Reverse Mortgage Specialist Atlantic Home Loans 1835 Post Road East 2nd floor Westport CT 06880 203 521 0445 mobile 203 454 1000 x 2104 office 203 413 4423 fax NMLS 110424

WHEN You BECOME A CAREGIVER by Peter J O Connell Editorial and Research Associate I ncreasingly it s happening that a senior citizen is finding himself or herself in the position of caregiver usually for a loved one or family member such as a parent or spouse In fact according to the National Alliance for Caregiving over 65 7 million Americans currently provide care for a family member and 36 of those are caring for an elderly parent Realizing the role Realization that you actually are functioning as a caregiver may come gradually Realization that because of financial or other circumstances you must become the caregiver may come with shocking suddenness Stephanie Erickson in an online article for Fox News describes these two situations rather well Caregiving is not a role that typically appears overnight There are small things that go unnoticed a quick errand to the pharmacy to pick up Mom s medication a short conversation with Dad s doctor about a new diagnosis or a review of an aunt s investments that have come to term Most of us don t recognize that all of these aforementioned examples are a form of caregiving or the support and assistance we provide on behalf of an aging or ill loved one The majority of us are awakened to our roles during an acute crisis such as when an aging relative falls at home loses his or her wallet or is hospitalized suddenly For many direct caring for a loved one is but the first phase in a multiphase process that will go on to inhome care by a caregiver hired from one of the many fine agencies providing such personnel and then possibly lead to a move in to an assisted living facility or nursing home Questions Whether your caregiving responsibilities are assumed gradually or suddenly temporarily or long term you need to become aware of what is involved in them Sarah Stevenson in Senior Living Blog suggests that you increase your awareness by asking yourself these questions slightly paraphrased here and thinking long and hard about your answers 1 Am I financially prepared for the extra costs of caregiving 2 Am I really capable of taking care of him or her all by myself 3 Do I have the social support and resources that I m going to need 4 How will caregiving affect my physical and mental health 5 If a loved one has dementia and can no longer filter his or her behavior will I be able to cope with hurtful words or actions 6 Will I be able to allow myself to accept help and take breaks 7 Will I be able to cut back on my other responsibilities during those times when I am needed as a caregiver 8 Will I be able to make time for myself and my family Legal and health care powers As your caregiving role develops you may find that health care providers government agencies financial institutions and other third parties require that you have authority to make decisions or to provide consent based on more than the fact that you are a caregiver The most common way and a flexible convenient effective one to acquire this authority is through a power of attorney Prepared by an attorney in consultation with your loved one this document adds the role of agent to that of caregiver letting others know that you do indeed have the authority to act on behalf of the person to whom you give care On the medical side of caregiving advance directives and a health care power of attorney also drawn up by an attorney in consultation with your loved one will let health care providers know the wishes of the loved one in matters such as terminal illness and who should make decisions when he or she cannot Getting paid Carol Levine of AARP in an online article Can I Get Paid as a Caregiver answers this question with maybe She explains concisely Some states have programs that help people pay for the caregiver of their choice and in certain circumstances that can be a family member These programs called variously consumer directed participant directed cash and counseling or other titles differ enormously depending on where you live Most have income and other eligibility requirements that the care recipient must meet and strict rules often apply as to who can be paid for the caregiving For information about what s available in your state contact your local Medicaid or aging services department or go to the National Resource Center for Participant Directed Services With regard to Levine s comments it should be noted

GENERATIONS LIVING TOGETHER Moving in With Your Kids by Peter J O Connell Editorial and Research Associate A t a certain point every senior citizen has to decide where he or she wants to live in the coming years Where to live not simply in the geographical sense but in what setting In his or her current home A retirement community Assisted living How about with his or her adult children Over the years That last choice used to be a quite common one In 1947 for example more than 25 of American homes housed at least three generations But change came in the 1950s and 1960s as nongenerational living replaced multigenerational living By 1980 the share of households that included two or more adult generations or ones that included grandparents and grandchildren had reached a low of 12 But that situation began to change thereafter with the change accelerating rapidly in recent years Now according to a Pew Research Center analysis of federal census data more than one fifth of Americans live with multiple generations under one roof including 21 of those 65 and older John L Graham author of All in the Family A Practical Guide to Successful Multigenerational Living sees this trend as part of a return to interdependence within the extended family This is the way that people have always lived around the world he told The New York Times Benefits If a senior most likely a widow or widower decides to seriously consider a move in with adult children the benefits and challenges of such a change will of course have to be evaluated very carefully Donne Davis in an article on the Huffington Post Should You Move to Live Near Your Grandchildren lists some of the key benefits Getting to know your grandchildren as they grow up Getting help from adult children with decisions such as budget and long term care Getting help with daily life such as shopping transportation and doctor visits Getting emotional support when your spouse or partner dies or you become ill

Challenges A senior contemplating a movein needs to take a clear eyed view of the challenges involved This entails trying to see things from the point of view of the adult children as well as from the senior s own perspective Nina Chen Ph D addresses the need for this approach in an article on MissouriFamilies org Multigenerational Families Provide Benefits for Everyone Multigenerational living also has its ups and downs Moving into a new household can be challenging and everyone involved needs time to make adjustments Family members may feel stressed with obligations like caring for elderly parents babysitting redefining roles balancing needs of different generations space and privacy and redistributing household responsibilities Not all multigenerational families may experience high levels of emotional closeness Some multigenerational families may experience either significant conflict or detachment in relationships Despite the financial benefits living in a multigenerational household may strain family relationships Speaking metaphorically the way to see the road ahead for the senior and his or her adult children and perhaps grandchildren too is to talk together long and hard and to prepare and plan plan and prepare Doing that should lead to the development of rules of the road ways of living together that facilitate getting from N challenges to benefits IMPORTANT QUESTIONS THAT YOU MAY HAVE Getting from the challenges of a move in to its benefits requires asking questions constructive questions Many such questions could be asked about many things but here are some that definitely should be asked about the most important issues Finances Multigenerational households share financial responsibilities What are everyone s expectations about who will pay for what Dave O Brien a financial adviser with Evolution Advisers told The New York Times Everybody needs to start with candid and open discussion about the money Layout and living space SeniorNews an online newsletter in Moving In With Your Child points out the importance of safety for the senior and privacy for all It asks How accessible is the home If adaptations would be needed what is the estimated cost and who would pay it And Is there sufficient space in the home to meet everyone s need for privacy Care Regarding the senior s health needs SeniorNews asks Would your child or other household members be able to cope with the demands of caregiving And how easily could you link with needed medical supports Caring com says that these are the first questions you need to answer Lifestyle SeniorNews asks Do you and your son or daughter have similar lifestyles and values If not are differences likely to be an ongoing source of tension Nina Chen on MissouriFamilies org urges Establish expectations and house rules to help create a functional and rewarding multigenerational family household And Communicate any household issues with all family members on a regular basis and address any issues before they become problems Finally Emily Brandon at money usnews com in Baby Boomers Moving In With Adult Children has a wise take on an old saying The ties that bind do chafe at times but they also hold relatives near

Painkillers Handle with care DON T BE AN ACCIDENTAL DEALER LOCK UP YOUR MEDS by Thomas Gerrity Publisher Drug overdose deaths are now the leading cause of accidental death in the United States surpassing peak annual deaths caused by motor vehicle accidents guns and HIV infection Pain relievers are by far the most commonly abused prescription drugs and ones with opioids are especially addictive If you are prescribed pain medication protect yourself and others by following these tips Tell your doctor what medications you are on This seems like a no brainer but not providing your doctor with a detailed personal history and list of medications that you re already taking can have serious effects particularly if you see multiple doctors Take exactly as directed Follow your doctor s instructions Changing how you take opioids and other painkillers increases the chances of misuse dependency and even addiction Get a tip sheet An information sheet should cover how and when to take the medication For example does take two pills four times a day mean to take eight pills in a 24 hour period or eight pills during waking hours Don t take medicine in the dark If you cannot read the label on a pill bottle do not take what is inside If you keep all your medicines in the same place the potential for popping a harmful CTSeniorHelpCenter com dose of a prescription strength drug instead of two Tylenols is very high Don t chew crush or break pills Although the sight of a mammoth pill is enough to make anyone gag avoid the urge to break it into smaller easy to swallow pieces These smaller pieces can get absorbed into the body faster than they are meant to and may have effects similar to a drug overdose Do not share medications How drugs react in the body varies from person to person Medications are prescribed to specific individuals Taking drugs intended for others or offering someone drugs meant for you could have lethal consequences Throw out expired medications Expired medications should be thrown away Many police departments have prescription drug drop off boxes in their lobbies that are available 24 7 Use a permanent marker to cross out your personal information or remove the label Store securely Commonly abused prescription medications such as painkillers are highly sought after Always keep prescription medications in a safe and secure location in your home so that others cannot take them Prescription medications should be kept in their original bottles in a locked cabinet lock box or a hidden location N Fast easy and always FREE Studies show that 70 of young people who abuse prescription drugs get them from their parents grandparents or other relatives Following these three steps will go a long way in keeping your medications out of the wrong people s hands Count your pills at least every two weeks to monitor theft and help ensure that medications are being taken properly Lock and store medications in a secure place where others would not think to look Drop off unused or expired medications at drop boxes or during take back events You may think that your loved ones and visitors won t steal your pills When addiction takes over however an addicted person will do anything to get his or her next fix

Continued from page 31 Financial Accounts Many people manage their financial affairs online including bank and PayPal accounts investment and brokerage accounts bill payment e g utilities credit cards car note payments mortgage payments and income taxes Some clients may even deal with virtual currencies such as Bitcoin Business Accounts Business owners are likely to have customer databases containing names addresses and credit card information along with information such as order history and pending orders A professional such as a physician attorney or CPA may have client records many of which will contain confidential information Other Digital Assets In this category are items such as domain names blogs loyalty program benefits e g frequent flyer miles credit card rewards and business discounts or vouchers and gaming property e g virtual money avatars or other assets earned when playing online games Why is it important to include digital assets in the estate plan Assist Others Upon Death or Incapacity When individuals are prudent about their online life they have many different usernames and passwords for their accounts This is the only way to secure identities but this devotion to protecting sensitive personal information can wreak havoc on families and fiduciaries upon incapacity and death as their rights to access digital assets are often unclear as discussed here Proper planning may make this process less complicated Reduce Identity Theft In addition to needing access to online accounts for personal reasons and clos ing probate family members need this information quickly so that a deceased s identity is not stolen Until authorities update their databases regarding a new death criminals can open credit cards apply for jobs and get state identification cards under a dead person s name Prevent Financial Loss to Estate Failure to plan for digital assets upon death and disability may cause financial loss to the estate For example electronic bills for utilities loans insurance and other expenses need to be discovered quickly and paid to prevent cancellations And without power the furnace may not run and keep pipes in the house from freezing or the security system may not work if the residence is burglarized Avoid Losing a Personal Story Many digital assets are not inherently valuable but are valuable to family members who extract meaning from what the deceased leaves behind Historically people kept special pictures letters and journals in albums scrapbooks or shoeboxes for future generations Today this material is stored on computers or online and often is never printed Personal blogs and Twitter feeds have replaced physical diaries and e mail messages have replaced letters Without alerting family members that digital assets exist and without telling them how to get access to them the story of the life of the deceased may be lost forever This is not only a tragedy for family members but also possibly for future historians who are losing pieces of history in the digital abyss If you have ignored this part of your estate planning now would be a good time to start paying attention to it N TIPS FOR A SECURE PASSWORD Here is a statistic to keep you up at night According to a recent study approximately 90 of passwords are considered to be vulnerable to hacking Security analysts all agree that our passwords are much more insecure than in the past Here are three tips that you can use in order to protect your passwords 1 Use a Different Password for Each Site 55 of people use the same password on most of the sites that they visit according to a recent survey Once hackers have access to a list of passwords used on one site they then can use these passwords on any other site that you use as well 2 Use Longer Passwords Generally longer passwords are more secure than shorter ones When selecting a longer password with multiple words it is important that they be completely random Using phrases or common sequences of words will be easy for the hacker s algorithms to predict 3 Avoid Common Password Patterns One of the reasons that our passwords have become so predictable is because the rules governing what must be contained within them tend to be similar Most sites require a mix of upper and lower case letters numbers and a symbol Avoid using words and numbers that mean something to you birthdays phone numbers Social Security numbers special dates street addresses etc
