6 LIFE IN BALANCE Addressing Hearing Loss Brings Many Benefits by Peter J O Connell Editorial and Research Associate W ith the technology available today hearing aids can enhance the quality of life significantly for most people with hearing impairment First and foremost you will hear a lot better It will become a lot easier to hear what other people say You will become reacquainted with sounds that you may not have heard clearly for a long time such as birds singing doorbells ringing the wind howling water running Because of the importance of hearing related issues and the problem of the reluctance of many to seek appropriate counseling and treatment the Senior GO TO Guide reached out to a noted Connecticut audiologist Dr Natan Bauman to get the benefit of his insights SGTG Dr Bauman how would you describe the essence of what you do Dr Bauman We are a practice with a passion We do not just dispense hearing aids we provide better hearing through technology education and counseling We truly understand that hearing is priceless and the effect that it has on our overall health and social interaction We treat our patients like a family and find a solution for each patient based on his or her specific needs We want our patients to be able to enjoy the subtleties of sound that enrich our lives SGTG Could you comment more on the passion that drives your practice Dr Bauman It is a function of my Dr Bauman My profession needs own drive for excellence the pursuit of perfection I began my studies with an effort to master the principles of electronics and sound propagation With that mastery I can make modifications to hearing aids so as to optimize what patients need My clinical experience and 30 years at the Hearing Balance and Speech Center have taught me how variable those needs are My ultimate goal is not just to make people hear better but to live better My real reward is hearing from a patient that I have done that to do a better job of making people understand the importance of hearing to overall physical mental emotional social health and the consequences of neglecting hearing problems For example hearing problems impact the cardiovascular system dementia diabetes With impaired hearing you live more poorly may find relating to other people a chore and stressful rather than a pleasure may even isolate yourself from social relationships Sound makes a huge difference in our lives for the brain turns sound into emotion Actually of the five senses you could say that hearing is the most important for survival We have ears to hear from all directions and unlike our eyes our ears are open 24 7 Their receptors are closer to the limbic system The great Helen Keller was blind and deaf but said that if she could achieve just one sight or hearing she would choose hearing So if your hearing is impaired go to an audiologist have a professional listen to what you have to say SGTG Has treating patients like a family as you said been a way of learning about the variability of needs involved in helping people live better Dr Bauman Yes Actually the ear system is a kind of family itself involving hearing balance and speech In people s families there are different needs by age because of changes in the brain and ambulatory changes Moreover people of the same age and degree of hearing loss may have different deep seated preferences as to what they most want to hear young grandchildren say or opera Their aids need to be adjusted differently I have to understand not just a person s degree of hearing loss but in a sense the total picture of the preferences from his or her brain and soul SGTG What do you think is the best way of encouraging someone with hearing difficulty to actually visit a professional specializing in hearing N Dr Bauman holds a Master s in electronics and electro acoustics from Wroclaw Polytechnic Institute in Poland and Master s and Doctor s degrees in audiology from Columbia University For ten years Dr Bauman directed a clinic at Yale New Haven Hospital with a faculty appointment in the Yale School of Medicine In 1988 he opened the Hearing Balance and Speech Center and in 1999 the New England Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Clinic HBSC now has six locations spread throughout Fairfield and New Haven Counties Dr Bauman is the developer of hearing aids that have been called revolutionary HAVE YOU HEARD That more than 30 million people in the U S over age 50 have impaired hearing including two thirds of those older than 70 years and four fifths of those older than 85 yet less than 15 of the hearing impaired use a hearing aid device That the average person seeing a medical professional about difficulty in hearing has been having trouble for seven or more years before seeing the professional

10 Heathy Mouth Healthy You by Peter J O Connell Editorial and Research Associate You have to open your mouth to tell a story But an open mouth can tell a story without your uttering a single word The condition of your mouth and teeth tells a dentist a lot about your overall health The point of that story is healthy mouth healthy you and vice versa There is growing evidence that problems in your mouth can affect other parts of your body and your psychological outlook and social functioning Combating these problems begins with daily brushing and flossing rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash having a properly nutritious diet avoiding tobacco and going for regular dental checkups and cleanings Brushing and flossing and getting regular dental cleans checkups will help you to have a great looking smile brighter whiter looking teeth and fresh breath They are an important part in preventing gum disease and reducing your risk of tooth loss and dental problems Getting a regular professional cleaning will remove plaque tartar buildup and stains from your teeth And bear in mind Prevention is less expensive than cure An online article on WebMD points out that tooth decay gum disease cavities bad breath can affect your confidence self image and selfesteem With a healthy mouth your quality of life is also bound to be better you can eat properly And bear in mind Prevention is less expensive than cure sleep better and concentrate with no aching teeth or mouth infections to distract you Connections Here are some connections of oral conditions to other major health issues Cardiovascular problems Numerous studies have indicated that heart disease blockages of blood vessels strokes and endocarditis might be linked to the inflammation and infections that oral bacteria can cause Dementia Poor oral health can increase your risk of dementia by a third The Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery Psychiatry reports that adults with gingivitis swollen bleeding gums perform worse on tests of memory and cognitive function than those with healthier gums and mouth Diabetes It has long been observed that people with diabetes are more prone than others to gum disease Now new studies suggest that there is a two way link Gum disease itself actually may contribute to diabetes through its effects on blood glucose control The Canadian Diabetes Association says that the host response to peridontal bacteria can increase insulin resistance and therefore blood glucose levels Lung infections People with disease affecting the gums and surrounding tissue have more bacteria breeding in their mouths Hence they are more likely to inhale germs that can lead to lung infections such as pneumonia and make pre existing lung problems worse Continued on page 12

12 Healthy Mouth continued from page 10 Rheumatoid arthritis Research has found an association between gum disease and RA Experts say that the mechanism of destruction of connective tissue in both gum disease and RA is similar Advances Estimates are that over 30 million Americans are missing all teeth in one or both jaws Many millions more are missing at least some teeth Tooth loss can occur to people at various age levels but is a common occurrence as we grow older But there is no reason to live with the discomfort and embarrassment of tooth loss Dentures of course are removable dental appliances that replace missing teeth and are made to look and function like natural teeth Composed of plastic or porcelain dentures are prosthetic teeth that rest on the gums They can be removed at night or other times for cleaning Dentures provide a number of cosmetic and functional benefits but sometimes have problems of comfort and fit They may cause irritation and difficulty in chewing certain foods and even impede speaking clearly Implants may be advisable when a person has lost more than a few teeth but still has enough bone in the jaw to support the implants which resemble small screws and are made of titanium Each implant is inserted into the gums and jawbone through a small incision Bone loss however is probably the most detrimental consequence of missing teeth according to Chairside magazine Following tooth loss the bone regresses both horizontally and vertically If traditional dentures are worn the support and stability for the mouth and face may decrease with negative effects upon facial esthetics and self esteem After this surgery the gums and bone will take three to seven months to grow in around the implant Once this process is completed a metal device is attached to the implants and custom made dentures are fabricated to be secured to that piece of hardware The implantsupported dentures have an acrylic base that looks like gums Porcelain or acrylic teeth that look like natural teeth are then attached to the base After the final dentures are in place their fit or appearance may be adjusted But dentistry today is a field in constant development of new and improved techniques therapies and treatments One of the most dynamic areas of advance involves implants N HIGH TECH FAMILY COSMETIC and IMPLANT DENTISTRY We want your family to be a part of our family We are dedicated to providing patients with the best dental care available Our staff is friendly and welcoming and our facilities are comfortable creating a relaxing experience during your visits Dr Jeffrey C Hoos DMD FAGD Dr Johna Zitnay DMD Dr Gemma Kwolek DDS Dr Julia Latham DDS 4949 Main Street Stratford P 203 378 9500 F 203 386 9057 203 378 9500 BetterSmile com Mon Thurs 8am 8pm Fri 8 30am 5pm Sat Every Other 8 30am 4pm

14 14 Benefits of Owning a Pet by Peter J O Connell Editorial and Research Associate I t s been said that the dog is man s best friend But it also could be said that animals of many kinds can be the best friends of both men and women and good medicine too As Pet Partners puts it an emerging body of research is recognizing the impact the human animal bond can have on individual and community health And healthcare journalist Nicole Brierty points out owning a pet could in fact improve your mental and physical state especially in the elderly Additionally a number of studies have indicated that as one of them concludes Recognizing and nurturing the connection between animals and humans has potential implications for individual stability and health improved economic outputs and healthcare cost savings including a decrease in doctor visits and the amount of time spent staying home sick Your heart your pet Among the many good reasons for putting a pet in your heart interacting with one a gentle friendly one of course over time are the effects that an animal can have on cardiovascular health Research has shown that as scientist R W Byrne points out Just 15 minutes bonding with an animal sets off a chemical chain reaction in the brain lowering the levels of the fight or flight hormone cortisol and increasing production of the feel good hormone serotonin The result heart rate blood pressure and stress levels immediately drop Over the long term pet and human interaction can lower cholesterol levels fight depression and may even help protect against heart disease and stroke One study found that an automatic relaxation response triggered simply by the presence of a dog in a room with an individual actually lowered the person s blood pressure better than taking a popular type of blood pressure medication And heart healthy effects are not limited to interactions with dogs Noted veterinarian Dr Marty Becker says If you have a cat you re 30 percent less likely to have a heart attack and you re 40 percent less likely to have a cardiovascular incident like a stroke In fact studies have shown positive health effects from interactions with birds cats crickets dogs fish guinea pigs hamsters horses rabbits turtles and more Conditions in addition to the cardio ones showing such effects include ADHD allergies Alzheimer s and related conditions anxiety autism chronic pain colon cancer fibromyalgia depression diabetes immunodeficiency lymphoma migraines

15 problematic eating habits PTSD recovery from joint replacement surgery stress and more For example the American Diabetes Association has pointed out that one third of pets living with diabetics change behavior when their owner s blood glucose level becomes unstable this change in the pet s behavior can function as a warning to the owner One of the leading benefits of pet ownership particularly of dogs is the incentive for physical activity that it provides A new study described by Dr Karen Becker on healthypets mercola com discovered that older adults who owned dogs walked almost 22 minutes per day more than a dog less group enough exercise to meet the U S and international exercise recommendations for substantial health benefits Feeding grooming visiting veterinarians playing with and otherwise interacting with animals provide additional activity for pet owners even those who do not have dogs to walk More support less stress Stress is harmful to both physical and mental emotional health Given the deleterious effects of stress it s important to note that as an article from the National Center for Health Research puts it Findings suggest that the social support a pet provides can make a person feel more relaxed and decrease stress The social support provided by a pet might also encourage more social interactions with people reducing feelings of isolation or loneliness With 75 of seniors living alone this is obviously an important function offered by pet ownership An example here would be the fact that a person s walking with a dog has been found to increase contact and communication with other people especially with strangers In this connection it might be mentioned that over the years men and women of all ages have found that being out and about with a pet can act as a date magnet As WebMD puts it Forget Internet matchmaking a dog is a natural conversation starter Many seniors struggle against depression A pet can be a great ally in that struggle As an article in SeniorHomes com reports caring for an animal requires a sense of responsibility and routine that may be lacking as older adults shed long held work and social roles Caring for a pet can provide purpose and establish a routine In fact research published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology shows that pet owners have stronger self esteem are more extroverted and less fearful than people who don t own pets Among the mental and emotional benefits that pets offer are energy and enthusiasm laughter and love One psychotherapist notes that Dogs and other pets live very much in the here and now They don t worry about tomorrow And tomorrow can be very scary for an older person By having an animal with a sense of now it tends to rub off on people And another psychologist says Having a pet helps the senior focus on something other than physical problems and negative preoccupations about aging Veterinarian Marty Becker puts it well People who have pets are less harried there s more laughter in their life When you come home it s like You re a star And You might lose your job your house your 401 k but you ll never lose the unconditional love of your pet N

22 Painkillers Handle with care DON T BE AN ACCIDENTAL DEALER LOCK UP YOUR MEDS by Thomas Gerrity Publisher Drug overdose deaths are now the leading cause of accidental death in the United States surpassing peak annual deaths caused by motor vehicle accidents guns and HIV infection Pain relievers are by far the most commonly abused prescription drugs and ones with opioids are especially addictive If you are prescribed pain medication protect yourself and others by following these tips Tell your doctor what medications you are on This seems like a no brainer but not providing your doctor with a detailed personal history and list of medications that you re already taking can have serious effects particularly if you see multiple doctors Take exactly as directed Follow your doctor s instructions Changing how you take opioids and other painkillers increases the chances of misuse dependency and even addiction Get a tip sheet An information sheet should cover how and when to take the medication For example does take two pills four times a day mean to take eight pills in a 24 hour period or eight pills during waking hours Don t take medicine in the dark If you cannot read the label on a pill bottle do not take what is inside If you keep all your medicines in the same place the potential for popping a harmful dose of a prescription strength drug instead of two Tylenols is very high Don t chew crush or break pills Although the sight of a mammoth pill is enough to make anyone gag avoid the urge to break it into smaller easy to swallow pieces These smaller pieces can get absorbed into the body faster than they are meant to and may have effects similar to a drug overdose Do not share medications How drugs react in the body varies from person to person Medications are prescribed to specific individuals Taking drugs intended for others or offering someone drugs meant for you could have lethal consequences Throw out expired medications Expired medications should be thrown away Many police departments have prescription drug drop off boxes in their lobbies that are available 24 7 Use a permanent marker to cross out your personal information or remove the label Store securely Commonly abused prescription medications such as painkillers are highly sought after Always keep prescription medications in a safe and secure location in your home so that others cannot take them Prescription medications should be kept in their original bottles in a locked cabinet lock box or a hidden location N Studies show that 70 of young people who abuse prescription drugs get them from their parents grandparents or other relatives Following these three steps will go a long way in keeping your medications out of the wrong people s hands Count your pills at least every two weeks to monitor theft and help ensure that medications are being taken properly Lock and store medications in a secure place where others would not think to look Drop off unused or expired medications at drop boxes or during take back events You may think that your loved ones and visitors won t steal your pills When addiction takes over however an addicted person will do anything to get his or her next fix

24 Retirement Income Management Timing is more important than many realize by James B Gust Senior Editor Merrill Anderson Company I nvestor truism Time in the market is more important than timing the market For those with a long term time horizon volatility in the financial markets is relatively unimportant Imagine that a portfolio has an average 10 year return of a modest 5 but the yearly returns are 25 18 3 4 28 2 8 10 12 and 8 Does it matter when the bad years occur It does not The graph below shows what would happen to 500 000 over ten years On the bottom the bear market comes early pushing the portfolio into loss territory from which it recovers only after eight years Putting the bull market first as on the top causes the portfolio to soar but when the inevitable bear market ensues the losses apply to a much higher base After ten years the portfolios arrive at the same final total the most important market moves happen on just a very few days The risk of market timing is being out of the market when another major uptick occurs A very different story for retirees Retirees are concerned about outliving their financial resources For savers the sequence of returns makes no difference at all During the accumulation years of the financial life cycle the important factor is being invested for as long as possible to be confident of participating when the markets enjoy good years Although one might hope to move the portfolio to cash at the top of the market to avoid the bear market losses very few investors have been able to do that successfully Studies have shown that and with good reason There are not many options for a retired person to boost his or her income other than selling assets What is a sustainable withdrawal rate for a retiree Timing is everything in trying to answer this question If retirement commences during good economic times the nest egg has a good chance of lasting decades TWO PATHS 1 200 000 1 000 000 Bull Market Early 800 000 739 413 600 000 500 000 400 000 200 000 Bear Market Early Start Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 Year 6 Year 7 Year 8 Year 9 Year 10

25 DIVERGENCE 1 200 000 Bull Market Early 1 000 000 800 000 739 413 600 000 400 000 200 000 Bear Market Early Start Year 1 Year 2 Let s begin with the 739 413 that was saved in the earlier example Assume that the retiree will need to draw down 50 000 annually less than 7 of the account s value If there is a bull market when the withdrawals begin the account will continue to grow despite the partial consumption as shown in the graph above After taking 500 000 out of the account over ten years a retiree who begins taking distributions during a bull market still has 667 639 to work with for the balance of the retirement However a colleague who retires during a down market is not so fortunate At the 10 year mark this retiree s portfolio is just one third Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 Year 6 the value of that of one who retired during a bull market The years of high returns are applied to a much lower account balance What can one do The choice of a start date for one s retirement will be influenced by many personal factors The health of the financial markets is typically low on the list of concerns but these tables suggest that perhaps it shouldn t be There are steps that can be taken to protect against market vagaries Augment capital Sell the house move to smaller quarters pocket 250 000 worth of capital gains tax free 500 000 for couples to supplement retirement capital Year 7 Year 8 Year 9 Year 10 Reduce spending Someone who already has retired doesn t have the luxury of becoming unretired Unpleasant though it may be when the markets head south some spending plans may have to be deferred or eliminated Smooth portfolio volatility through sound asset allocation By balancing portfolio assets among a variety of investment classes large stocks small stocks short term bonds longterm bonds and so on expected returns may fall within a narrower range The lowest lows will be avoided along with the highest highs and the risk of outliving one s money may be reduced N

35 The history intrigued me too since I m also English Its history dates back to the 1634 arrival of the Sanfords from England with Thomas and Sarah moving to Milford after 1639 He was the nephew of Andrew Warner founder of Hartford and related to the Sanford founders of Redding CT The original land grant from the English King Charles II as shown on the 1646 map indicates that the first planter was Zachariah Whitman ancestor of Walt Whitman Many believe that the original house was built by Thomas Sanford a descendant of the English Thomas and Sarah who moved to Milford after 1639 The house was built by David Bristol a mason my Saxon maiden name is Mason I have a craving for old bricks the material of masons and the dominant building material of my home county in England and as luck would have it my closest friend is an English stone mason No coincidence me thinks A Mason left his stamp on the house Mason David Bristol built a house of 7 stone fireplaces and foundations that still last including the 8 feet wide and 4 feet deep kitchen fireplace built of fieldstone with a hearth of Connecticut bluestone On both sides of the once twofamily house the kitchen fireplaces contain beehive ovens named for the domed shape of oldfashioned beehives that were used for baking drying foods and slow cooking For the living room hearth Bristol used the same green marble from the Milford mine that supplied the material for the White House The home is one of only 4 remaining of The Milford Style a Dutch gambrel curved sloping front roof with dormers and a shed straight roof in the back SanfordBristol is particularly unusual in that it is a double Dutch gambrel with front and back curved beams although later renovations obscure the back Follow Your Passions or Your Heart They lead To The Same Place It took a law suit my buying the house unseen due to the owner s refusal to allow a viewing and four years of work to save this house But now that it s done and ready for a new family perhaps only the 5th in its 264 years I feel almost absurd pride in the result I m also grateful to my parents that gave me the will for such an undertaking And now when I look at my hands I see one of my mother s and one of my father s Lesley Mills Owner Griswold Home Care We care for our elders our heritage 2018 Connecticut Preservation Award Recipient Who s the right person to buy or rent this piece of history Call me for a tour Lesley Mills 203 376 7340 coldwellbankerhomes com ct milford 111 north street
