6 His life was his GREATEST show Research Associate areas of business and also politics and philanthropy The three ring circus created by P T Barnum to be the Greatest Show on Earth and delight children of all ages is now no more after 147 years But the impact of the Fabulous Showman the Prince of Humbugs the Shakespeare of Advertising on American society and culture was great and lives on It could be said that in a sense Phineas Taylor Barnum s greatest show was his own life a threering circus of sorts because of his energetic pursuit of varied interests not just show business but other Barnum always was a proud son of the Nutmeg State born in Bethel and living most of his life in Bridgeport Even his birthdate in 1810 was almost perfect for such an archetypal American figure July 5 Barnum was not fond of physical labor on the family farm but became an enthusiastic entrepreneur at an early age selling snacks and homemade cherry rum and purchasing his own livestock by the time he was 12 At 19 he married Charity Hallet his wife for the next 44 years who bore him four daughters by Peter J O Connell Editorial and By age 21 Barnum owned a general store a book auctioning trade a statewide lottery network and a newspaper called The Herald of Freedom He also engaged in real estate speculation and was active in local politics advocating against blue laws stemming from Puritan times that restricted gambling and other activities of P T Barnum and his first wife Charity Hallet circa 1860 amusement and recreation Making entertainment acceptable was a lifelong cause for Barnum As he wrote This is a trading world and men women and children who cannot live on gravity alone need something to satisfy their gayer lighter moods and hours and he who ministers to this want is in a business established by the Author of our nature And he also wrote The Noblest Art is that of Making Others Happy In 1834 when lotteries were banned in Connecticut Barnum sold his store and moved to New York City A year later he found his vocation as a showman when he exhibited Joice Heath a wizened black woman whom he advertised as the 161 yearold nurse to George Washington After Heath died in 1836 it was revealed that she was most likely no more than 80 This revelation came out during a public autopsy staged by Barnum himself who charged admission The Heath affair was the first of Barnum s humbugs as he called them dubbing himself the Prince of Humbugs For Barnum a humbug was different from a hoax It was something harmless presented in exuberant exaggeration with a wink and a nod for people s enjoyment and often to entice them into an environment where they could experience genuine wonders Barnum never said there s a sucker born every minute but he did say that the American people Continued on page 8

10 LIFE IN BALANCE Addressing Hearing Loss Brings Many Benefits by Peter J O Connell Editorial and Research Associate W ith the technology available today hearing aids can enhance the quality of life significantly for most people with hearing impairment First and foremost you will hear a lot better It will become a lot easier to hear what other people say You will become reacquainted with sounds that you may not have heard clearly for a long time such as birds singing doorbells ringing the wind howling water running Because of the importance of hearing related issues and the problem of the reluctance of many to seek appropriate counseling and treatment the Senior GO TO Guide reached out to a noted Connecticut audiologist Dr Natan Bauman to get the benefit of his insights SGTG Dr Bauman how would you describe the essence of what you do Dr Bauman We are a practice with a passion We do not just dispense hearing aids we provide better hearing through technology education and counseling We truly understand that hearing is priceless and the effect that it has on our overall health and social interaction We treat our patients like a family and find a solution for each patient based on his or her specific needs We want our patients to be able to enjoy the subtleties of sound that enrich our lives SGTG Could you comment more on the passion that drives your practice Dr Bauman It is a function of my Dr Bauman My profession needs own drive for excellence the pursuit of perfection I began my studies with an effort to master the principles of electronics and sound propagation With that mastery I can make modifications to hearing aids so as to optimize what patients need My clinical experience and 30 years at the Hearing Balance and Speech Center have taught me how variable those needs are My ultimate goal is not just to make people hear better but to live better My real reward is hearing from a patient that I have done that to do a better job of making people understand the importance of hearing to overall physical mental emotional social health and the consequences of neglecting hearing problems For example hearing problems impact the cardiovascular system dementia diabetes With impaired hearing you live more poorly may find relating to other people a chore and stressful rather than a pleasure may even isolate yourself from social relationships Sound makes a huge difference in our lives for the brain turns sound into emotion Actually of the five senses you could say that hearing is the most important for survival We have ears to hear from all directions and unlike our eyes our ears are open 24 7 Their receptors are closer to the limbic system The great Helen Keller was blind and deaf but said that if she could achieve just one sight or hearing she would choose hearing So if your hearing is impaired go to an audiologist have a professional listen to what you have to say SGTG Has treating patients like a family as you said been a way of learning about the variability of needs involved in helping people live better Dr Bauman Yes Actually the ear system is a kind of family itself involving hearing balance and speech In people s families there are different needs by age because of changes in the brain and ambulatory changes Moreover people of the same age and degree of hearing loss may have different deep seated preferences as to what they most want to hear young grandchildren say or opera Their aids need to be adjusted differently I have to understand not just a person s degree of hearing loss but in a sense the total picture of the preferences from his or her brain and soul SGTG What do you think is the best way of encouraging someone with hearing difficulty to actually visit a professional specializing in hearing N Dr Bauman holds a Master s in electronics and electro acoustics from Wroclaw Polytechnic Institute in Poland and Master s and Doctor s degrees in audiology from Columbia University For ten years Dr Bauman directed a clinic at Yale New Haven Hospital with a faculty appointment in the Yale School of Medicine In 1988 he opened the Hearing Balance and Speech Center and in 1999 the New England Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Clinic HBSC now has six locations spread throughout Fairfield and New Haven Counties Dr Bauman is the developer of hearing aids that have been called revolutionary HAVE YOU HEARD That more than 30 million people in the U S over age 50 have impaired hearing including two thirds of those older than 70 years and four fifths of those older than 85 yet less than 15 of the hearing impaired use a hearing aid device That the average person seeing a medical professional about difficulty in hearing has been having trouble for seven or more years before seeing the professional

16 Higher Reverse Mortgage Limits for 2018 Beginning in January 2018 lending limits for government insured reverse mortgages have been increased allowing borrowers the opportunity to access more of their home equity than ever before The Federal Housing Administration FHA is required by the National Housing Act to set Single Family forward loan limits at 115 of median house prices subject to a floor and a ceiling on the limits The floor loan limit increased from 275 665 to 294 515 on January 1 2018 In high cost areas the FHA s loan limit ceiling increased to 679 650 up from its present level of 636 150 The vast majority of reverse mortgages are federally insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgages HECMs that are backed by the Federal Housing Administration These loans allow homeowners age 62 and older to convert a portion of their home equity into loan proceeds that can be used to supplement retirement spending So what do higher loan limits mean for reverse mortgage borrowers With the Maximum Claim Amount MCA now set at 679 650 for 2018 this amount will now be the highest possible loan limit that can be insured by FHA on a single HECM loan But let s assume that your home was appraised for 500 000 In this scenario the MCA would be 500 000 rather than the max limit of 679 650 Understanding MCA is important because lenders consider this amount when determining how much reverse mortgage loan proceeds will be available to you also known as the principal limit Higher lending limits mean that some reverse mortgage borrowers can access a greater amount of home equity than in the past This is especially true for homeowners with properties valued above the former FHA HECM max lending limit of 636 150 In 2018 some positive things are surfacing The first meaningful loan limit change since 2009 has gone into effect increasing from 636 150 to 679 500 For borrowers with higher priced homes we have seen the reemergence of the Reverse Jumbo loan The existing jumbo program had been under utilized because it only benefited borrowers with homes valued at 1 5 million or more and it held a high rate The jumbo programs have been improved so that rates are lower and borrowers receive more money higher loan to value based on age Rates are everything Interest rates now have a direct impact on your available reverse mortgage benefit Taking out a reverse mortgage now before rates climb higher will yield you the most from your home s equity If you are short to close but have the funds to bring in now is the best time to do so and eliminate that mortgage payment The Maximum Claim amount is the lesser of a home s appraised value or the maximum FHA lending limit This means that if your home is appraised at 700 000 your MCA under the HECM reverse mortgage program will be the max lending limit of 679 650 because this is the lesser of the two values Cover story photo credits can be found on page 66 If you would like to move and use a reverse mortgage for a new home purchase we can help you buy that new home without taking on a traditional mortgage or having to pay cash for the home A combination of cash and a reverse mortgage on the new home may be your perfect combination At Atlantic Home Loans we will look at your unique situation and devise a plan that suits your needs N Call me or email me anytime Cindy Cindy Perham Reverse Mortgage Specialist Atlantic Home Loans 1835 Post Road East 2nd floor Westport CT 06880 203 521 0445 mobile 203 454 1000 x 2104 office 203 413 4423 fax NMLS 110424

18 Q A Living Trusts by James B Gust Esq Senior Tax Trust Editor Merrill Anderson Co Inc F or centuries living trusts have been a popular management tool for the preservation and growth of one s assets Living trusts offer a remarkable degree of flexibility helping people achieve their needs for today as well as for tomorrow And for planning for the future for coping with the unexpected For maintaining financial security for loved ones and for organizing one s assets in an efficient manner Not to mention the peace of mind that comes with having a solid plan in place for the management of one s wealth I m often asked questions about living trusts We would like to share a few of the more common ones with you 1 Is it difficult to set up a trust No You start by discussing your financial concerns and investment goals with a trust officer or other wealth management professional along with your attorney who will prepare the trust agreement 2 What does the agreement say Generally the agreement delineates that you as grantor creator of the trust are transferring assets to a legal entity the trust to be administered by a named trustee A typical trust agreement arranges for income from the trust assets to be paid to a spouse the

26 Tips for Downsizing Your Home by Thomas Gerrity Publisher M oving out of a home that you ve lived in for many years can be stressful Especially when moving to a smaller space causes you to make decisions about what you re taking with you However downsizing offers a lot of benefits to seniors Maybe there will be less or no yard work and a smaller space may be easier to keep clean Maybe there s a staircase to the bedrooms that has become too hard to climb and you re spending more nights sleeping on the sofa instead of your bed Or maybe you have way more space than you need When you re ready to downsize your home here are a few tips to keep in mind so as to make moving as painless as possible Start early If you think downsizing your home is in your future it s never too early to begin sorting through some of your belongings Get into those closets and storage spaces and start weeding out items for which you no longer have a need Plan ahead Have an idea of how big your new living space will be Knowing how much space that you ll have will allow you to plan for how much furniture you can bring with you and how much storage space you ll have for your belongings Create lists Lists help keep you organized Make lists of things that you need to do such as shutting off utilities transferring magazine subscriptions etc as well as lists of belongings you would like to keep donate or sell Ask for help Enlist family members or close friends early on to help you move Moving is not an easy process and you shouldn t think that you ll be able to do it all yourself Start making decisions Sometimes deciding what to keep and what needs to go can be the hardest part of moving We attach memories to our belongings and parting with them can be bittersweet Keep in mind that not everything can come with you so you may need to make some tough decisions Give things away Oftentimes family members are happy to take some of your belongings into their own homes As they are helping you pack and move designate certain items to them or let them choose to take an item that they may have been coveting for a while Save the memories You might not have room for all those old photo albums in your new home Ask someone about digitizing them or even pare them down into smaller scrapbooks of memories N

30 Painkillers Handle with care DON T BE AN ACCIDENTAL DEALER LOCK UP YOUR MEDS by Thomas Gerrity Publisher Drug overdose deaths are now the leading cause of accidental death in the United States surpassing peak annual deaths caused by motor vehicle accidents guns and HIV infection Pain relievers are by far the most commonly abused prescription drugs and ones with opioids are especially addictive If you are prescribed pain medication protect yourself and others by following these tips Tell your doctor what medications you are on This seems like a no brainer but not providing your doctor with a detailed personal history and list of medications that you re already taking can have serious effects particularly if you see multiple doctors Take exactly as directed Follow your doctor s instructions Changing how you take opioids and other painkillers increases the chances of misuse dependency and even addiction Get a tip sheet An information sheet should cover how and when to take the medication For example does take two pills four times a day mean to take eight pills in a 24 hour period or eight pills during waking hours Don t take medicine in the dark If you cannot read the label on a pill bottle do not take what is inside If you keep all your medicines in the same place the potential for popping a harmful dose of a prescription strength drug instead of two Tylenols is very high Don t chew crush or break pills Although the sight of a mammoth pill is enough to make anyone gag avoid the urge to break it into smaller easy to swallow pieces These smaller pieces can get absorbed into the body faster than they are meant to and may have effects similar to a drug overdose Do not share medications How drugs react in the body varies from person to person Medications are prescribed to specific individuals Taking drugs intended for others or offering someone drugs meant for you could have lethal consequences Throw out expired medications Expired medications should be thrown away Many police departments have prescription drug drop off boxes in their lobbies that are available 24 7 Use a permanent marker to cross out your personal information or remove the label Store securely Commonly abused prescription medications such as painkillers are highly sought after Always keep prescription medications in a safe and secure location in your home so that others cannot take them Prescription medications should be kept in their original bottles in a locked cabinet lock box or a hidden location CTSeniorHelpCenter com Studies show that 70 of young people who abuse prescription drugs get them from their parents grandparents or other relatives Following these three steps will go a long way in keeping your medications out of the wrong people s hands Count your pills at least every two weeks to monitor theft and help ensure that medications are being taken properly Lock and store medications in a secure place where others would not think to look Drop off unused or expired medications at drop boxes or during take back events You may think that your loved ones and visitors won t steal your pills When addiction takes over however an addicted person will do anything to get his or her next fix N Fast easy and always FREE
