SGLT 2 A TYPE 2 DIABETES PRESCRIBED MEDICATION PATIENT INFORMATION Why Have I Been Given This Leaflet You are taking or about to take one of the following drugs Canagliflozin Invokana Dapagliflozin Forxiga Empagliflozin Jardiance Why Have I Been Prescribed This Medication You have been prescribed this medication because you have Type 2 diabetes Along with healthy eating and increased physical exercise this medication can help to control your levels of blood glucose throughout the day When you eat your digestive system breaks down food into glucose sugar This glucose is filtered by your kidneys and most of the sugar is reabsorbed back into the bloodstream However this medicine reduces this reabsorption and helps the body to pass the glucose out of your body in your urine This means that when you take this medicine your urine will test positive for glucose Things to Be Aware of When Taking This Medicine Patients who take any of the above medicines and also a sulphonylurea or insulin may be at risk of experiencing a hypoglycaemia The signs to look for are Shaking sweating feeling anxious fast heartbeat Feeling hungry headache or change in vision A change in mood or feeling confused If you experience any of these signs you should treat as a low blood glucose If you are unsure of how to treat a low blood glucose discuss this with your Doctor or Nurse People Taking These Medicines Can Sometimes Get Thrush or Urinary Tract Water Infections Signs of a urinary tract water infection are Fever or chills Burning sensation when passing urine Pain in your back or side If you see blood in your urine you should consult a Doctor immediately People Taking These Medicines May Have an Increased Risk of Dehydration SGLT2 Inhibitors and Diabetic Ketoacidosis in Type 2 Diabetes People taking this drug can develop an unusual complication of diabetes This can lead to too much acid in the blood This is called diabetic ketoacidosis and can happen even when your blood glucose concentration is normal If not identified early this can be very dangerous However this is a VERY RARE complication What Should I Look out For Signs of diabetic ketoacidosis DKA can include any of the following Signs of dehydration include Increased level of ketone bodies in your blood or urine Very dry or sticky mouth Rapid weight loss Feeling very thirsty Feeling sick or vomiting Feeling very tired or sleepy Stomach pain Excessive thirst Passing little or no urine Fast heartbeat Fast and deep breathing Confusion Unusual sleepiness and tiredness A sweet smell to your breath a sweet metallic taste in your mouth or a different odour to your sweat or urine If you have any of these symptoms please see a medical professional such as a doctor or a nurse even if your blood sugars are near normal If your GP practice is closed contact the Out of Hours Service State that you are worried about Diabetic Keto acid osis
