President’s CornerBY JUD WALFORD, LONGHORN REGION PRESIDENTIf you have endured the torturous Summer then you are in for more activities as our Longhorn Region PCA year closes out. Before it does, you can enjoy Autocrosses, Track Day, more interesting Drives and two special social events. Also, don’t forget Halloween Trunk or Treat at Boysville/Girlsville.On October 1st, Longhorn Region celebrated its 60th Anniversary with a picnic and concours at the fabulous Guadalupe River home of member Jim and Ramona Peck. It was one of the most successful events ever for our Region. Some 100+ members, 55 cars and 37 Concours entries and fabulous Bar-B-Q and every kind of side dish and dessert you could ever hope to try. Thanks again to Jim and Ramona Peck for their wonderful hospitality and sharing their unique property. We are also planning another Golf Tournament as the one in April was very successful and everyone had a blast. Look for more details soon. Our last event of the year is the Annual Christmas Party this year at a new venue, The Club at Sonterra. Great facility and menu with special 60th Anniversary gifts and give-aways and presentations. Don’t miss it!It is that time of the year for the election of officers. You will notice that I am not on the ballot. I have enjoyed the last three years as Treasurer and President but it is time for new blood and we have some excellent new candidates who are capable and ready to serve. Be sure to vote. I hope you will give the new Board the same support I have enjoyed over the years. I will still be involved on the Board as Past President and Concours and Fiesta Challenge Chair and look forward to continuing my active role in the club.As you know if you read this column, I am always encouraging members to get involved and find the activity that interests you and be a part of it. I want to preach that theme again as I know there are many of you out there who have not participated. I can only say “Try it…you’ll like it”.So have a great Fall. See you at Autocross…Track Day…Monthly Meeting…Drive…Picnic…Christmas Party? Hopefully at all of them!LH ROUNDUP 7

ZONE 5 NOTESZONE 5 NOTESCHUCK BUSH, ZONE 5 REP PCA growth continues apace with over 98 thousand primary members and 150K+ total members. Zone 5 is helping lead the pack with the Maverick region leading in the category of actual growth, and the Rio Grande Valley region leading the factored growth. Way to go, and keep up the good work! Some of you may ask what is the Rio Grande Valley region. It is the new name of the Coastal Bend region. The name was changed to better represent its membership. That growth is a direct reflection of the leadership in the region reaching out to Porsche owners in the area and bringing them into PCA.Speaking of leadership - PCA and Zone 5 lost a great one recently with the passing of Robert (Bob) Miller. Bob was a 60-year member of PCA - former PCA President, Bill Scholar Award winner, Zone rep, region officer, etc. He helped lead Tech Tactics and made it one of the premier Porsche events in the country for many years. Bob was very charming, and super successful in getting volunteers, because it was hard to say no to someone that was so nice and gave so much himself. He will be greatly missed. There are a couple of large Porsche events held in the Zone every year. Boxstoberfest on the second weekend in Sept., and Palooza on the second weekend in Nov. Boxstoberfest was very successful this year with over 100 cars cruising around the Texas hill country. In its 25th year, it is a fun event that drew participants from all across the zone. The granddaddy of Porsche events is the PCA Palooza held in Eureka Springs, AR. This is one of my favorite Porsche events in the country as it is a low key, non-commercial party with great roads, cars, and people. I know I will see a lot of you there this year!At the National level, PCA continues to deliver value to its membership by putting on great events both by itself, and in partnership with Porsche. National events continue to draw large and growing participation and provide a great time for participants. Werks Reunion, Sportscar Together Festival, Treffens, Parades, and the upcoming Rennsport Reunion VII. These are all great events, and definitely worth considering. Ask folks that have attended them in your region the ins and outs of registering and attending for tips on how to make your experience that much better. Events like Rennsport Reunion require planning a year out, so don’t delay if you want to attend. Parades and Treffens sell out quickly, but you can get in with the right planning. Your region leadership can also help provide advice on how to attend. There is so much going on in PCA, in your region, across the Zone, and across the country. I hope you are getting the opportunity to get out and experience the nationwide community that is PCA.See you out on the road. Chuck Bush Zone 5 Rep.10 LH ROUNDUP

This is a great venue to visit even though parking is a bit of a challenge. To be a Biergarten in New Braunfels you have to be pretty authentic to pull it off, and they do. Delicous German food and over 100 beers to choose from. Building has a beautuiful indoor area with traditional picnic table seating. There is a nice outdoor Biergarten with a band stand providing live music Wed-Sun. On this evening we were seated at a group of tables inside. Our memebrs ordered as they arrived. Service was great and we enjoyed excellent German beers and entrees. Tonight it was too noisey and not private enough for our typical meeting. Instead, we enjoyed socializing with each other after dinner. If you have not been to Krause’s, give it a try! 12 LH ROUNDUP

Autocross Results from Sept. 24 Article by Mike MatthewsGary & Jo check people inCars gettting readyTimers get ready tooDrivers walk the courseOn Sept 24 the LHR had its rst fall autocross. We had 19 cars and 25 people at the event. For many it was their rst event and from talking to many of them during and after the event they really enjoyed themselves. We did things a little dierent for this event and didn’t charge an entry fee for the rst timers. The event consisted of two heats of eight runs each (one run to get used to the course and seven timed). We had one group driving and another working the course. After the rst eight runs were completed, the groups changed places and we started running again. When the event was completed awards were given out for the PAX winner, the rst to register and the rst novice to register for the event. The last thing we do when we nish the event is to break down the timing equipment, tent, and pick up the cones. Please consider helping the event sta get everything down and stowed in the trailer.Overall Indexed ResultsLonghorn PCA Autocross Sept. 24, 2022Pos Name Class Car # Total Time Index Index Time From Previous From Top1 William D. Drive to Blanco and the Buggy Museum Article by Shelley Matthews and Photos by Mike MatthewstWiNs!On August 20th a group of Porsches made their way through hill country roads to Blanco and the Buggy Barn Museum. Although I've passed by that museum hundreds of times on my way to Johnson City or Fredericksburg, I'd never stopped by to take a look inside. Much to my surprise it was much more than just full of old buggies. There was an entire old west town - complete with a cemetery - where movie scenes have been lmed, along with buggies and covered wagons that have appeared in numerous TV shows and lms. Some of the movies were the remake of True Grit and Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. There was even a buggy with the style of carriage that was the beginning stage of the 1957 Porsche 597 Jagwagen (Hunting Car)! We got a personal tour with Pistol Packin' Paula - a world renown gun spinner champion - who had so much information about all the history of the buggies. This is truely a Texas hidden gem! So if you've never stopped at the Buggy Barn Museum before make sure you put it on your bucket list. oLDWEst toWN20 LH ROUNDUP

Fall Picnic Article by Shelley Matthews, Photos by Betty Campbell, Donna Clement, and Brad Laue This year's annual fall picnic and concours was held on October 1 at the home of Jim and Ramona Peck. We had a record 105 people attend with 55 cars and 37 cars entering the concours. Rudy's famous BBQ catered the meats along with their creamed corn, potato salad, cole slaw and with everyone else bringing a side dish or dessert - needless to say - there was LOTS of food!Longhorn Region is celebrating our 60th Anniversary this year. So, everyone attending received a free t-shirt commemorating this special event! The weather was perfect with temps in the 80's (after a record high Texas summer) and a cloudless sky. A special thanks goes out to the Peck's for hosting again this year! And thanks to Jud Walford for running the concours and all the volunteers helping to put the picnic together, judging the concours, and cleaning up afterwards. Everyone had a great time! And Happy 60th Anniversary to the Longhorn Region and all its members.Concours Winners996/997Panamera/CayenneAir Cooled968/993991/992BoxsterCaymanTop - Jud gets ready to give out concours trophies.Left - Jud, Mike, and Susie look over judge's papers.Right - Mike turns his judging papers in.Donna and Shelley give out 60th anniversary t-shirts.22 LH ROUNDUP

Boxstoberfest Article by Betty Campbell Photos by Betty Campbell and Shelley MatthewsBoxstoberfest – Not Just for Boxsters!Over 100 Porsches flocked to Fredericksburg September 9-10 for Boxstoberfest. For many, this has been an annual event for years, but it was my first time and quite an eye-opener. For the longest time, I thought Boxstoberfest was just for Boxsters. But quite to the contrary, every year, model and color can be found there! Chuck and Susie had mapped out some incredible drives through the Hill Country, ranging from driver-led to scenic drives on your own, and of course a gimmick rally! Friday there were choices – we did the Wine Country tour. Thankfully it was with one of the Fredericksburg wine tour companies so we were on a bus, not driving ourselves. Twenty-eight of us visited three wineries. It was cool because the wineries were all very different. The first was Arrowhead Creek, a small boutique winery; the second Safari Winery where we tasted their wines from south of the equator (Chile, Argentina, and South Africa); third at The Edge tasting room where we explored wines from English Newsom Cellars in Lubbock. Even sharing a single tasting at each, I think two wineries would have been sufficient for most of us!The big event for me was seeing 100+ Porsches lined up on the active runway at the Gillespie County Airport. From one end to the other and even wrapping around the ends of the buildings, all you could see was Porsches.Besides the cars, one of things I enjoyed most was seeing all the families with young kids excited to be there. (Seems the gimmick rally is a big hit with families!). The next generation of Porsche lovers is on the move! There were 6 groups doing the driver-led drive, 3 groups driving the route clockwise and 3 driving it counterclockwise. This is the first time Kris had led a group and I have a newfound appreciation for those leaders (and their navigators!). We went out several weeks in advance to drive the route, note areas of particular concern (like sharp curves) and have an idea where we were going so we wouldn’t lead 13 unsuspecting cars into oblivion! I’m so glad we did – the direction we were leading was missing the road sign at the very first turn and we missed it on our trial run! That would have been a very embarrassing start! All in all, I was stressed the whole drive making sure we were making the correct turns and not losing anybody! The event wrapped up with a banquet Saturday. Food, music, dancing, and door prizes after 2 days of Porsches – what more could you want?!There were people from all over and talking to them made me realize just how lucky we are to live here in the Hill Country. Folks drove a long way to come do what we can do any day we choose to!Thank you to all of you (especially Chuck, Susie, Mike, Shelley, and Donna) who make events happen. The people behind the scenes are unsung heroes for all the hard work and time they put in to make them happen. Next time you pick up an event bag filled with goodies or take a drive with detailed directions, think of the people behind it and thank them. Better yet, volunteer to help!26 LH ROUNDUP

Nowhere else, and at no time, can you walk down the street or pull into a parking lot and see a classic car show right there in front of you every day. Car Week on the Monterey Peninsula is the most unique week anywhere in America for car enthusiasts. From silly cars at the Lemon show to little cars at the Little Car Show to the newest multimillion dollar Ferrari, Bugatti or Maserati, they are all here. They are at auctions, car shows and all along the street and parking lots…it is an overload of spectacular vehicles unmatched anywhere. It ranges from the latest premier models from every car maker to the classic cars from around the world in every class at the famous Concours D’ Elegance on the 18th hole at Pebble Beach Golf Course. Not to be outdone, Porsche is represented amply by the Porsche Club of America’s Werks Reunion. Over 800 Porsches of all models and years are represented in concours competition, the display lot and…well everywhere. This, being my 8th Werks Reunion, I have learned how to navigate the system and the venue, even though it is the 4th different location for this event on the Peninsula. This year it is located at the Monterey Pines Golf Course, otherwise known as the “Navy Course”, and the better part of 3 golf holes where the entrance and practice areas are full of Porsches. On display are the newest models, unusual cars, race cars and Porsches you didn’t even know existed. In addition, almost 200 Porsches are entered in the Concours Competition. Sponsor booths abound all over the grounds and some serious swag is available as well as seriously priced souvenirs at the PCA sales booth.A great prelude to the Werks Reunion is the show at Porsche Monterey a few days prior. It is a free event, and all Porsches are welcome to display on a first come basis as several city blocks are closed for display in addition to the dealer lot. Hundreds of Porsches and even the dealer repair garage is full. Local wineries and craft beer and whisky booths offer free drinks, and the crowds have the run of the facility to enjoy all the unique and valuable cars.In addition to the pricy shows like Ferrari, The Quail, and Hagerty, there are lots of free activities. Two events in Pacific Grove are open to the public, a general car show and the Little Car Show. The most popular event of the week is Concours on the Avenue held in Carmel every year on Ocean Avenue which is closed off for many blocks to accommodate various classes of cars all out for all to see at no charge. Unfortunately, the event was cancelled this year due to the organizer having passed away. It should resume next year.Another free look, this time at the cars from the Concours D’Elegance entries, is on Ocean Avenue a few days prior to the Concours when the cars make a tour around 17 Mile Drive and end up stopping for lunch in Carmel. If you find a spot on 17 Mile Drive you can see the cars in action, much better than standing still IMHO. Either way, you can see these cars without charge as opposed to the $575 fee to attend the Concours D’Elegance. The early morning bargain is the 4 a.m. visit to the Concours D’Elegance set up on Sunday Morning. If you can brave the cold and fog and early hour, Hagerty has some special hats for you.I love the Monterey Peninsula and its natural beauty. and with 100-degree temps in San Antonio, this place rarely above 70 is very welcome this year. If you come, you can expect high prices for everything from accommodations and food to the $5 and above gas prices but as my wife likes to say, “you get what you pay for” and Monterey delivers. There are many other attractions to enjoy besides the cars with great drives on Highway 1 to Big Sur and beyond, the Hearst Castle, great wineries in Paso Robles and the many beaches on the Peninsula and in Santa Cruz. The Monterey Wharf is fun and the food spectacular. San Francisco is less than 2 hours away and the Napa and Sonoma Wine Country a little further. If I sound like a travel brochure for Northern California it is because it is truly a wonderful area and Car Week and the Werks Reunion are just icing on the cake. Think about a visit next year to Car Week and join me in a great place and great car events.LH ROUNDUP 31
