Some things are getting back to the “new normal” we’re still living day to day.Elections for LHR ofcers are coming up! If you or someone you know is interested in being nominated for any of the ofces, please let Mike Vriesenga know. Voting happens in October and the new slate of ofcers will take over in December at the Christmas party. If running for ofce is not your thing but you’d like to be more involved - sign up for a committee! Concours, charity, driv-ing tours, social media, membership, track and safety, website, Roundup. There’s lots of ways to volunteer and get involved. Even if you don’t have a lot of time to spare, there is a place for you!! The club is run by volunteers and new ideas are always welcome.I mentioned the Christmas party. As of this writing, it is still on and scheduled for December 11 at the Petroleum Club. This is also our Toys 4 Tots drive (so while you’re out shopping, pick up a toy or two)! It is also when the new board of directors will take over. If we do have to cancel it, we will try to plan something to collect the toys. Because of space, this party is limited to 100 members. Watch your email and the website for further and the most up-to-date information. This is a very popular event!! Once it’s posted on clubregistration.net sign up quickly! The rest of the year is packed full of Porsche events! October has the Big Bend drive, a track day, picnic, and the Trunk-n-Treat at Boysville/Girlsville. November is the COTA event and another track day before Thanksgiving. And December rounds out the end of another year with the Christ-mas party and Toys 4 Tots toy drive. Considering we had another year of the dreaded Covid, we were able to have lots of events. Dare we hope that next year might be Covid-free? Yea - ok - that might be too much to hope for but we will still plan as many events as possible that follow pan-demic guidelines.LH ROUNDUP 3

ZONE 5 NOTES CHUCK BUSH, ZONE 5 REP As our Summer draws to a close, I hope that those of you affected by recent storms across the Southeast of our Zone made it through without much damage and things are getting back to normal. The recent uptick in COVID cases has reduced region activities with many events suspended. However, there are still a lot of events happen-ing across the Zone and the country, and I hope you have been able to get out and enjoy your Porsche. Tours, autocrosses, concours and track events can all be very safe events, and let you enjoy your cars and friends with low risk.We recently completed Boxstoberfest which was held out of Fredericksburg, TX, the second weekend in Sept. We are working to make it more of a Treffen like zone event. We had two days of driving tours, a gimmick rally, banquet and lots of comradery. We had great partic-ipation from across the Zone with over 100 Porsches. Hope you can join us next year! Another fun zone wide opportunity coming up the second weekend in Nov. is PCA Palooza in Eureka Springs, AR. This event equals PCA National level events in scope and activities. Hope you get an opportunity to attend. Maverick region is hosting a club race in Oct. and there are region events happening every weekend through Dec. One other item that is worth highlighting is the dramatic changes that have been happening on the PCA website. I have to admit that I only logged on very infrequently. If you don’t check it out more often, you are missing a lot. While Panorama is great, the website is much more agile in delivering Porsche related content, and boy have they been delivering. Great articles, tech videos, and just news and Porsche infor-mation make it a great place to drop in and get your Porsche fix. Make sure you check it out, there is something for everyone!Chuck Zone 510 LH ROUNDUP

MOTORSPORT RAMBLINGS BY JACK MERRELL After doing this column for well over ten years new topics are harder to come by so let’s just keep this one short and cover a few reminders. First, what to bring to a track day or DE. It’s a good idea to have a checklist and go over it prior to leaving home. The first thing should be to take unnecessary things out of the car. We all tend to accumulate stuff in the car so just take the major-ity out before you leave home. Besides, you will have more time so you can fish out those little things that have migrated to the floor under the seats. Otherwise, I guarantee they will come out later on the track.Next check your tire pressure. Make sure the pres-sure is where you want them while your tires are cold. The pressure will increase as you drive to the track and then lose a pound or two while the car sits during the briefing and staging. Now, what to bring with you. A hat, tire pressure gauge, sun-screen, maybe a snack and even though we normally have water at the grid, something to drink might be a good idea. Depending on the weather a light jacket and/or rain gear. From experience, bringing a towel is a good idea. A few small tools are also advisable as there is always something that is loose or needs adjusting. And believe it or not, check your gas level. Sounds foolish but, at almost every track day we have had over the last ten plus years, at least one driver has had to leave early because of low fuel. Running on the track uses significantly more fuel than street driving. Lastly bring yourself rested and in good health. A cold or just feeling fatigued will affect your perfor-mance and reduce your ability to drive safely.Gee, nothing I have written is more than common sense and yet over the years drivers come unpre-pared. Take your time at home to prep your car, assemble your necessities by following a checklist and most important be rested for the day’s activi-ties. Then arrive on time leaving plenty of time to have your car teched, sign the waivers, be ready to help, and have a fun and educational day. See you all on 16 October and again on 20 November.LH ROUNDUP 11

Meet the Longhorn - Bill Dorsey & Irene CamachoTell us a bit about yourself/family/back-ground? It has been an honor to serve my country in the Air Force flying the C-5 Galaxy and now the T-1 Jayhawk as an Instructor Pilot teaching Air Force pilot training. I have served over 21 years with a little more to go. My wife Irene and I met through the Air Force and we both enjoy the club. I really enjoy the competition at autocross events with fellow Longhorn members. I hope to serve the club in a leadership role in the future as my Air Force career ends. What year did you join PCA? 2016What other regions have you belonged to? NoneWhat Porsche do you/have you owned? We currently have a 991.2 Targa 4 GTS, a Cayenne Diesel, and a Macan GTS.What’s your favorite Porsche memory? Drive to Driftwood and Salt Lick BBQ Article by Mike Vriesenga and Photo by Sherry SorberaPretty Pink Pickups, Plentiful Powerful Porsches & Pleasant Pig PartsOn August 21, 2021 Michael Sorbera led 26 Porsches and 50 people on a winding drive through backroads between San Antonio and Austin. Michael picked some roads that were new to many of us, which added to the fun and sense of adventure. There is always something new to discover, even after you think you’ve seen it all.Speaking of seeing it all, the eye-popper for me was an old pickup on the south side of Rebecca Creek Road. Now we’ve all seen old pickup trucks staged as yard art on ranches outside of town. You may even have a neighbor with an old pickup slowly turning into yard art. But have you ever seen a pickup truck painted pink with its bed stuffed with flowers? Imagine the conversation.“Earl, you never listen to me! If I’ve told you once I’ve told you a thousand times, do something with that old truck.” “Darlin’” says Earl in his best David Allan Coe bass voice, “the way you’re always talkin’ I caint do nothin’ but listen to you. That pickup truck was with me before you was with me, and it’ll be with me after yer gone. Don’t you go pickin’ on my pickup or you’ll be pickin’ a fight.” “Earl”, Darlin says, “if you don’t want to hear me talkin’ about your pickup any more, then that’s the way it will be. Me and Hillary always stand by our men!” “I love you Darlin,’” Earl replies naively. Of course, Darlin’ knew what she was doing. Next time Earl was out of town she bought every dis-count flower she could find at Hobby Lobby. She got two gallons of pink latex paint at Home Depot and a Wagner Power Painter, and voila! - the prettiest pink pickup on Rebecca Creek. Now imagine the next conversation.Michael served up a mixture of slower obscure roads, like Rebecca Creek and Fischer’s Store Road, and some faster roads like 2325 and 165, to bring us safely and smiling to Salt Lick Barbeque in Driftwood. Through a combination of good and bad navigation, both groups arrived at Salt Lick precisely on time. Many folks noticed our Porsches were faster than the service, but the conversation was good, the food was tasty, and everyone drove home fed and happy. Thanks again to the Sorberas for their leadership. Editor’s note - a non-PCA member saw our line of cars go through Driftwood and followed us in his Boxster to see what was going on. He joined us for some BBQ and hopefully Hill Country Region has a new member!Driver’s MeetingDarlin’s Revenge!16 LH ROUNDUP

Boxstoberfest This year’s Boxstoberfest was held September 10-12 at Fredericksburg Airport. People showing up on Friday were able to participate in several drives, the gimmick rally, or just chill at the Hangar Hotel. Saturday’s events started off with over 100 cars lining along the taxiway. Then after a brief driver’s meeting the day’s activities started. There were several main drives going in different directions but ending up at the Frio Canyon Bike Shop for lunch. A more ener-getic drive took those participants through the hill country roads. The gimmick rally took drivers to seven of the 14 Historic Schoolhouses of Gillespie County to answer questions on their rally sheets. After the day’s activities, participants met back at the Hangar Hotel for a night of food, drinks, and dancing. Zone 5 rep and LHR member Chuck Bush emceed the night and a lot of great door prizes – thanks to the wonder-ful sponsors - were given out with the assistance of Donna and Crystal. Sunday morning had old and new friends saying goodbye and heading home - - until next year!On a side note - a lot of us do the drives but there aren’t many gimmick rallys to participate in. If you’ve never done one, you’re missing out! The gimmick rally was part of Saturday’s activities at Boxstoberfest in Fredericksburg, TX. The rally took drivers to seven of the 14 Historic Schoolhouses of Gillespie County. (The other seven schoolhouses were featured in the rally in 2019.) Each participant was given direc-tions to each schoolhouse and a set of questions to be answered. Three different questions were asked of each school, and they included – how many origi-nal outhouses are there, what color was the original roof, what year is engraved in the chimney, what other buildings were added later, what was on the teach-er’s desk, etc. All of the schoolhouses were open to explore and most had members from the Historical Society to answer questions and give some history – some had even been students when those schools were in use. And most have added pavilions and/or added to the original building and are now used as community centers where locals hold family reunions, wedding receptions, and game nights. These school-houses are open to the public. This was such a fun and informational rally that included great twisty curvy roads! Maps and tour information are available at https://www.historicschools.org/. Back to the rally! After the rally was complete, we ventured back to the Hanger Hotel and turned in our sheets. At the dinner that night, ribbons were presented to the top six teams. First through sixth winners were - Dennis and Lena Schmitt, Roland and Wendy Wiele, Donna and John Middleton, Kevin and Jennifer Kaley, Mike and Shelly Matthews, and Steve Davis. All winners were only separated by one answer, and the final order was based on the random guess of how many rocks were in a jar. So if you’ve never done a gimmick rally, or it’s been awhile, think about joining in next time. You’ll have a great time – I promise!!18 LH ROUNDUP

You Can do it! Article & Photos by Chuck BushOne of my favorite movie lines is from the movie Matilda, where the heroine stands up on her chair and yells “you can do it Brucie” as the evil headmistress forces poor little Bruce to eat an entire chocolate cake. Sometimes DIY jobs on your Porsche seem intimidating, and the path of least resistance is to have someone else do the work. But for some jobs, the work itself is half of the reward and sat-isfaction of Porsche ownership. I recently acquired a 99 Boxster, or Agent 99 as we call her. While I prefer to get my hands dirty on the older cars as they are often simpler to work on, Agent 99 needed some TLC, so I thought I would look online and in my 101 Projects for your Boxster book for solutions. The first issue was the saggy, often bouncy ride. I’m not a fan of just replacing shocks/struts just because a car has 87K miles, but even I was convinced that perhaps it was time. One of the nice things about living when we do is that you can go on YouTube and find a little video about how to do just about anything, so I searched replacing struts on a 1999 Porsche Boxster and had lots of options on how to do it.I have to say, some of the videos are awful. I watched one where the guy filmed every turn of his wrench on every bolt - as he blundered his way through a job he had never done. But some videos are crisp, get to the point, and are really helpful. So after watching a few, you have an idea if what you need done is some-thing you can tackle. The struts however, are a big job, require a lot of tools, and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to take it on. However, I figured if I got stuck I could always get help.So I ordered the parts, and with some advice from local experts, borrowed tools from a fellow PCA member Mike Matthews and NAPA, and help from another PCA member Kris Campbell, I dove in. I have to admit - it was a pain to do and took a lot of time. Despite my rather ample supply of tools, I still had to buy a few more (oh darn). A few days later, the new shocks were in. If you ever wondered why some seem-ingly simple jobs cost a lot to have done, let me tell you that we probably don’t pay enough. It was would be worth every bit of the $1,000 the labor would have cost, but at least I got the satisfaction of tackling it myself. You Front strutDisassembled right front suspension20 LH ROUNDUP

know how it drives you nuts when you have a car in for service and they call you and tell you—while we were in there XYZ needs fixing? It happens when you DIY too. So while we were in there, we did a complete front brake job as the pads were just not seating on the rotors as well as I would have liked. Oh, and the front sway bar drop links were shot and needed replacing. But wow, what a difference in handling. I’m so glad I did it, and after I get it aligned at the Porsche Center, I am really to hit the road.Other little projects for Agent 99 included the window regulator due to a poorly functioning window and grinding noise as the window went up, and a horn that liked to honk itself.Once again, I turned to YouTube to see if it was a job I could do, and after acquiring more tools and parts, I knocked out those projects too. Thanks to my fellow PCA members, Porsche San Antonio, and Jones AutoWerks for help, tools, parts and advice. Just like Brucie getting support from his friends, together we can do it.Replacing regulator• Full name• Relation to you (i.e. Spouse, child, friend, etc.)• Their email address Add your COPILOT as aCO-MEMBER!Co-members are welcome to share in your PCA experience at no additional cost; they are invited to PCA events and receive their own user account on www.PCA.org. Tech Session at Xpel Article & Photos by Mike MatthewsOn Saturday, Sept 25, the Longhorn Region had a technical session at Xpel. Brett Clark, Marketing Manager, and Chris White, General Manager, and their crew demonstrated the process of applying their film to cars using some really nice Porsches. For the first demo they put a glossy film on the frunk and then a mat finish on a fender. Not only could we see the difference we got to see how they applied the film and all of the processes they go though. The next demo showed how they applied their UV film to the inside of a windshield (thanks Tito for having your beautiful GT2 RS there for this demo). Xpel first put the film on the outside to get the correct fitment and then applied it to the inside. They took great care not to get water/jelly on the inside of the car since it would not be good for the electronics.Xpel has some film that people can put on tempo-rarily for track days, trips, etc. This can be applied over painted surfaces and existing film (nice car Chris White - GT4). If you worry about getting rock chips or road grime on your car on drives, track days, rallies, etc., you might want to consider this option. The next demo was on car care. They talked about how to wash your car and how they would prepare a car for ceramic coating. They had a car that had just part of the roof and trunk coated so people could see and feel the difference. The last demo was about their car care products and when to use each one.It was a very interesting tech session and I had lots of great positive feedback. Please visit www.Xpel.com for more information. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the club I would like to thank Xpel, Brett, Chris, and their crew for a great tech session!24 LH ROUNDUP
