13The Haines moved to HSV on April 9 and spent some time in the RV campground until they found theirhome. The house was partially completed, so they were able to make a few decisions about its completion. They moved in at the end of May and are currently supervising the landscaping. thBefore moving to the Village, they lived in Kennewick , WA, which is near the confluence of the Columbia andSnake rivers. Both are retired—Don as a copy machine service technician and Izzy as a 24-year employee inHuman Resources with the city of Yakima. They have been married three years and have a LARGE blended family of 35, which includes kids, grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren with two more on the way this winter. Izzy is used to largefamilies as she is the 10 -born of 15 in her family. When asked how they met, they told an interesting story. They were neighbors but didn’t know each other very well until Izzy’s adult daughter was in need of a trailerhitch. Don happened to have one; Izzy and Don were married (“hitched” you might say) four months later.thThe Haines ended up in Hot Springs Village because after Don served four years in the Air Force, stationed inWashington, he moved to Hot Springs to work for his dad, who owned an appliance service shop on AirportRoad. Don built his own house in Mountain Pine and worked for his dad for eight years before moving backto Washington. So Don saw Hot Springs Village grow and develop in the 80’s. Another reason for movinghere is that Don has brothers who live in the area. Since they are still getting settled, they haven’t had muchtime to explore the area or try out some of the activities available in the Village yet. They don’t golf but saidthey might give pickleball a try. Don is an experienced woodworker and looks forward to fishing and huntingwhen he gets more time. Izzy loves to cook and bake and has generously supplied her neighbors with someof her baked goods. She also enjoys dancing and getting together for monthly game nights with theirFollowers Bible class. They still have their RV and look forward to traveling to neighboring states and theEast Coast, especially during fall foliage.Since attending Balboa Baptist, Don and Izzy have been impressed with how friendly and welcoming folks atthe church have been. They are members of the 9:00 Followers class and worship in the contemporaryservice. Izzy became a Christian at age 8, and Don was raised in a Lutheran family but accepted Christ andwas baptized in a Southern Baptist church in 1992. They also follow the online preaching/teaching of JohnHagee and Gary Hamrick (Leesburg, VA). Don has quite a bit of experience with all kinds of electronics, computers, and ham radio; he may be a good candidate for the Fix-it Team once they get settled. Izzy servedin the snacks area for VBS back in July and also has helped in the kitchen during Girls, Games, and Goodies.Maybe she is destined to help with Wednesday night meals? Please welcome Don and Izzy Haines when you see them on campus.N E W M E M B E R SDon & Izzy Haines
N E W M E M B E R SBoth Mike and Sharon grew up in the Houston area. Mike graduated from Deer Park High School and Sharon fromPasadena High School. Mike went on to attend the University of Houston Clear Creek as a kinesiology major, andSharon took her degree in accounting from Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches. After college, Mike workedseveral jobs before becoming programs coordinator for LaPorte Parks and Recreation, where he served for nineteenyears before retiring in 2014. Sharon worked in accounting for various doctors’ offices and later with propertymanagement.Mike and Sharon met through participation in a bowling league. They have been married for 40 years. Mike has a sonfrom a previous marriage and two granddaughters.Mike is an avid golfer, so they visited the Village on a Play-and-Stay vacation and decided this is where they wouldlike to retire. They bought a lovely home in a good location to access all the east end golf courses. As with many of us, the Hovendicks like the laid-back atmosphere of HSV with less crime and less traffic than theyexperienced in the Houston area. Mike’s main activity is golf, but he also does a lot of walking and exercising. Sharonenjoys working puzzles and reading. She also likes to volunteer and has recently been in training as a driver for SCAT.They consider themselves “homebodies” as they don’t travel much, although a trip to Ireland is on their bucket list.Sharon was raised in a Christian home and gave her heart to the Lord at age 12 at her home church, MemorialBaptist in Pasadena. Mike made his decision to follow Christ after he and Sharon were married. Sharon has servedpast churches in the area of finances and record-keeping. She may also have an interest in helping with BalboaBaptist’s library.Mike and Sharon joined Balboa Baptist in June of this year. They attend the contemporary service and are membersof the Trust Bible Class led by Jim and Kathleen Kull. Balboa Baptist was recommended to them by an acquaintancein Texas before they moved here from Montgomery, so they came to services once they moved here and liked whatthey saw. We are so glad to have them; make them feel welcome when you see them around.Mike and Sharon Hovendick14
