2 Visiting Boaters—Stop Here First! Please take a minute to call Diana Lambeth and let her know you are here in Belhaven. Diana has spent many years here in Belhaven as the Chamber Exec-utive Director before me (Diana retired in July 2022). She has also spent many years, and many nautical miles, on and around our NC Coastal Waters (and beyond). She is a much better source of information to our boaters than I ever hope to be! And is you love it here—she’s a REALTOR! River’s Edge Realty Diana Lambeth OCC Port Ocer (919) 880-1183—cell email - dianalambeth@gmail.com Slow Month for boating visitors We now count our bags monthly (sometimes it takes a while for ideas to come to me!) . In Aug the number of bags distribut-ed was- These bags contain info on all the places to Shop, Dine & Relax in Beautiful Belhaven! Many of you know that I used to work at TowBoatUS before I moved to Belhaven. So there I was …...looking for something to report about the Boaters or Marinas in our area and I came up with nada! So I’m winging it. There are a few things I know about boating no matter where you are and I will share my “expertise” with you here. By way of a question and answer—some funny—some no so funny! Q— What kind of boat should I buy? You work in the industry and I figured you would know what boats break down the most. A—This was always a tough one for me because my first thought was that if they need to ask ME what kind of boat THEY should buy then they likely have not had much experience with boat buying! And this question is really a 2-parter so I will answer it that way. Part 1—if you have never ever owned a boat (and I know this might get me in trouble with boat salespeople but I AM being honest here) - ...if you have never owned a boat, you should start with OPB’s. That’s an acronym for “Other people’s boats” Seriously—you offer to pay for gas; buy beverages; make sandwiches and snacks; and you are GOLDEN! You will ALWAYS be invited back! And it’s a good time to learn about boat handling and the local waters. And most importantly—just because you can “afford” a boat, does not mean that you should own one. Take some time to learn about boats. Did you know that with a TowBoatUS Membership you get the BoatUS Magazine? It has absolutely the BEST information for boaters! Also check into local Coast Guard Aux-iliary classes. I have taken 2 of their classes—one on boater safety and one on Navigation (that was HARD!) But if you are definitely going to buy a boat-please start local! If you want to buy a boat off Fa-cebook I just don’t even know what to say—except most I have seen are scams! Part II—in answer to breaking down….the more you know about how and when to perform maintenance on your boat the better off you are going to be. There is nothing sadder then loading up the boat to head out for the day and it won’t start! (I’ve been there!). Don’t skip out on maintenance! And the absolute worse thing you can do to a boat is put it in the water! Funny—Not Fun-ny! Seriously—that’s when “stuff” happens. But the more you put into maintaining your boat equals the more you are going to get out of it! ……..CR

9 Betsy has been busy with vacation and then back to school so I have taken over for this month. Betsy will be back next month though! Congratulations to Betsy for opening a successful business here in Bel-haven! Betsy opened almost a year ago on October 16,2023. In that time she has done such a wonderful job of offering fitness options for our community. I started going in March (according to the app you follow when you join the gym) for strength training after my knee surgery and PT. I still have one “bad” knee but man-o-man has it gotten soooo much better! I decided to work with Betsy as my Personal Trainer for several reasons that I will tell you about. First—I have to be honest with my-self. I WILL NOT GO to the gyn unless I have a scheduled time that I am paying for. I tell myself that I will go on my own but it just. doesn't.happen...Like.ever! Heck—I haven’t even made it there when she takes a day off! So if you are like me—start with a trainer. Also—I have worked with a trainer before and I have (in the way past) worked out on my own. I cannot begin to tell you what a difference working with a trainer will do for you. It makes every minute that you are in the gym count. Unless you have been doing this on your own for a while and have been getting the results you want, I highly recom-mend using a personal trainer even it’s to tell you that you should be lifting more—or you are going too far back—or keep your back straight—or my favorite—you have 4 more to do! You should especially go if you are losing motivation—i.e.—not losing or toning the way you feel you should be. Plus it’s fun to be there with others that are working at the same thing you are. Call or stop in today! Not sure where to begin? Contact Betsy (252-945-3588) at Balance in Motion Fitness today! Balance in Motion Fitness offers everything you need to get started on your strength training journey including flexible hours (Monday-Saturday 4am-10pm), a variety of equipment from the top brands in fitness, a great community, and 2 certified personal trainers. Betsy Waters of Balance in Motion Fitness has a few words she would like to share! This is where we usually have a yummy recipe or 2 to share, but today I think I would like to take a minute to let you know that there are plenty of fitness options to meet any / all of your needs in the area. Besides the beautiful great outdoors—we have yo-ga for all levels , Pickleball groups that play at the Rec Center (formerly the Boys and Girls Club), and Senior Classes at the Senior Center—Here is a little about each- Belhaven Senior Club 252-943-0755 213 E Main Street—Belhaven Video Chair Exercise Class with Peggy Bonner Tues—10:00—11:00 am Thurs—10:00—11:00 am I don’t know too much about the Pickleball players in Belhaven even though we did have a Pickleball Tournament back in June. 10 Can we talk about North Carolina’s LITTER Problem for a minute? ---- - - 18 Me on an actual Soap Box! -> -> Thanks Gayla Collins! Wouldn’t it be great if there was no litter in the town? Honestly—you are not go-ing to oend me by not littering. I would love the opportunity to skip a Friday or two! Keep in mind also that I pick up trash IN ADDITION to a few other citizens that regularly pick up and also the town maintenance folks pick up trash! I can only imagine what it would look like if no one was there picking up trash from around the town! And I’m not sure that trash cans are the answer. There were cer-tainly trash cans a plenty at the 4th of July celebration but we still had folks litter-ing. I had to ask a young man on Labor Day weekend to not leave the mess you dumped out of his mouth on MY SIDEWALK! Right in front of the Chamber of Commerce. He was certainly old enough to understand that if there was some-thing in his mouth that he did not want to be in his mouth—that he had a num-ber of options OTHER THAN MY SIDEWALK! And he was with his parents. SMH!!!! (that's an acronym for Shake My Head btw (by the way)) So what is the solution? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE—teach your children, your grandchildren, nieces, nephews…...and let’s not exclude any adults in your life ei-ther; to NOT litter! And I’m not asking anyone to get in a ght—I didn’t. I simply pointed out to the young man that, “we do not litter in Belhaven.” He picked up his mess and moved on. I would love to see some of the schools out there have a community trash pick up! I have everything you need—bags, gloves, pickers, vests and I’ll even throw in some discounted ice cream cards from Cloud 9 Creamery! Just give me a call to set it up. It will help the students see that there is a need to get the word out about litter! I’m available by text or call—(252) 732-5190 or email car-ol.belhavenchambercommerce@gmail.com We have some new stickers for you to share with friends and family! PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS MISSION!!! I am asking the commUNITY for support in helping with this ght against litter! We can only start with our town, our home, our commUNITY! If you would like a sticker or a “Litterbug Report,” come by the Chamber Ofce and I will be glad to help you! Wouldn’t it be great if Belhaven was called the Cleanest Small Town in NC? It’s possible! We just all need to start with ourselves. The best way to know what the litter “situation” is in your town is to volunteer to help with a trash pick-up! If you can’t make any of the pick-ups I have scheduled but still want to help—just let me know! I’ll come help AND provide the vests, gloves, grabbers, and bags! May-be your church or Civic group would like to help out? Pick a date and give me a call. (252) 732-5190….Carol’s cell You could also help by picking up trash when / where you see it. If you would like to keep a bag in your car—stop by the Chamber ofce and pick one up. I’ll be glad to make sure it’s disposed and COUNTED towards the towns efforts. (Yes—they track the bags of trash the community picks up!)
11 Red Wolves – Part One Red Wolves (Canis rufus) were once widely distributed throughout the southeastern United States from the Atlanc and Gulf Coasts, north to the Ohio River valley and central Pennsylvania, and west to central Texas and Southeastern Missouri. Red wolves were the original wolf of the Southeast, as described by early explorers like William Bartram in 1791 and painted by John James Audubon in 1845. The oldest discovered fossil remains of the species are 10,000 years old. The red wolf was nearly driven to exncon by the mid-1900s due to aggressive predator-control programs, habitat destrucon, and hybridizaon with coyotes. Now the only wild popula-on is federally protected as an endangered species, and exists in northeastern NC; Dare, Hyde, Tyrrell, Washington, and Beaufort Counes. Red wolves appear to be habitat generalists, but they currently occupy the swamps, forests, wetlands, and bushlands in their present range. Smaller than gray wolves, red wolves are larger than coyotes. They have a more lanky appearance than gray wolves, with longer and thinner legs. Their fur is a variaon from tawny to grayish black in color, with some black along their backs, and typically a p of black on the tail. There is oen a reddish color behind their ears, on their muzzle, and toward the backs of their legs. However, many red wolves can have the same colors as coyotes, which tend to be light gray with some black on the ps of their outer hairs. The red wolf diet consists primarily of small mammals, such as rabbits, raccoons, nutria, and other rodents. They will also prey on deer, travel as much as 20 miles per day in search of prey, and consume 2-5 pounds of food daily. Hunng is done individually, as well as in packs. Red wolves will occasionally wander onto private lands and prey on livestock. If a death and/or injury to livestock is reported, and determined to be the result of red wolf depredaon, the Red Wolf Coalion will reimburse the owner 100% of the animal’s/animals’ current market value. There have been 11 conrmed cases of red wolf depredaon in the 37 years since reintroduc-on in 1987 within the 5 counes (Beaufort, Dare, Hyde, Tyrrell and Washington) that comprise the Eastern North Carolina Red Wolf Populaon. Most commonly the depredaons have consisted of chickens or barn cats. There have been no depredaons on larger livestock species, such as cale. A study in Pocosin Lakes NWR and Alligator River NWR between 2015 and 2021, during a dramac decline in the wolf populaon, looked at populaons of prey species. The results showed that white-tailed deer and wild turkey held steady, but smaller predators and bears, including raccoons, opossums, and bobcats showed large increases. For example, the raccoon, bobcat, and bear detecon rates doubled from 2018 to 2021 as wolf numbers connued declining. Red wolves play a vital role in regulang populaons of deer, keeping them from over-browsing vegetaon and farmland. Like gray wolves, red wolves cull the sick and the weak deer, resulng in a healthier overall deer populaon. Because the wolves help control raccoons and opossums, they prevent these smaller predators from overpopulang to the point of endangering nave songbirds. When deer are comfortable roaming and grazing freely, the overgrazing can be detrimental to the ecosystem. For example, plant species that are valua-ble as food and shelter are less available to the animals that ulize them. The life span of a red wolf in the wild averages 6-7 years. Sexual maturity is reached at around age three. Mang occurs from January to early March. Two to six pups are born aer a gestaon period of about 60 days. Pups are well hidden in carefully selected dens while they are young and vulnerable. A pair of adult red wolves will usually mate for life, and their familial packs are formed around the breeding pair. Packs may range in size from ve to eight individuals, normally made up of the breeding pair and their o-spring from dierent years. Each pack has its own home range, which the wolves will hunt in and defend from other canids. They are ercely territorial creatures and will even ght other red wolves if needed. By age three the younger wolves will leave the pack in search of their own mates and territory. The requirement of larger home ranges for red wolves compared to coyotes is consistent between the original natural populaon and the modern managed populaon in North Carolina. Coyotes do not pose a direct challenge to red wolf territory and are displaced and removed by wolves in their territorial range. However, when red wolves are low in popula-on numbers, they will tolerate coyotes due to the lack of ability to form breeding pairs with other red wolves, and will mate with coyotes, producing ferle hybrids. As a species red wolves are larger in height, length, and weight. Coyotes usually weigh between 25 and 35 pounds while red wolves typically weigh between 50 and 80 pounds. Red wolves are longer (about 5 feet compared to 3 feet for coyotes). The wolves are more massive in the head, chest, legs, feet, and muzzle. Coyotes have proporonately longer snouts. There can be a size overlap between the two species, and in fact, some red wolves are smaller than some coyotes. The howl of the red wolf is similar to that of the coyote but tends to be of longer duraon and lower pitch. Coyotes tend to have more yapping intermixed with the howls. Red wolves have a social organizaon and re-producve behavior that is more similar to gray wolves than to coyotes. Coyotes and red wolves are not only very similar in appearance, they share a closely related genome. A comprehensive review of palaeontologic, morpho-logic, and genealogic evidence published by the Naonal Academy of Sciences in 2019 concluded reached several conclusions: 1. Available evidence suggests that ancestral red wolves constuted a disnct species dang back to at least the end of the ice age. 2. Modern red wolves are disnct from modern gray wolves and coy-otes. The red wolf is genecally more closely related to coyotes than to western gray wolves. However, it carries some genec ancestry not found in sample populaons of western gray wolves or coyotes. 3. Available evidence is compable with the hypothesis that modern red wolves trace some of their ancestry to historical red wolves. 4. Although addional genomic evidence from historical specimens could change this assessment, evidence available at present supports a disnct species status (Canis rufus) for the modern red wolf, that possibly has historical admixture. By Peter Boeger Refences available upon request Part 2 of this arcle will be featured in the October newsleer and will examine the history of the USFWS Red Wolf Recovery Program Coyote Red Wolf

13 You are not going to want to miss this! Fun at Bistro 1904 This years Tournament is going to be bigger and better than last year! At least that is what Tournament Director Hugh Sutton is hoping! This year we have a webpage with just about anything you need to know about the Tournament 2 day event. You can find the info at www.belhaventroutfest.com. Having trouble finding what you are looking for? Call me—Carol Roop (252) 732-5190. If you would like to Volunteer for the event—please let me know at least 2 weeks prior to the event. We have a few needs open so I would like to discuss your availability before we just point you in a direction! Call or stop in at the Chamber Office Tues—Friday 10:00 am—4:00 pm. First let’s talk about this beautiful artwork. This is a design that Cherry Sutton did for our shirts and info for the 2nd Annual Trout Tournament & Festival. Cherry is a local artist and wife of Tourna-ment Director Hugh Sutton. She also did the fish for our Logo that we used for everything the first year. If you would like to see more of her work—she has more of her artwork on display at RiverBend Cultural Arts Center in Belhaven at 467 Pamlico Street. And no Tournament would be complete without our most generous sponsors. I will be posting updated Sponsor Lists as the Tournament gets closer. We have so many that are STILL GIVING! Yes—we are Blessed! Last year our Tournament was able to present a check to the Beaufort Co Com-munity College for $40,000.00 to assist with the Marine Trades programs. This year we are expanding our support to include help in these areas - • Beaufort County Community College Marine Trades AND Skilled Trades Program assistance to students for tuition, fees, and books re-lated to the discipline areas. • Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA’s) and Registered Medical Assis-tants: these two health care disciplines do not receive the attention from donors that the colleges larger nursing programs receive, and, yet the turnover in these positions is great, as is the need for new em-ployees. Moreover, these students frequently come from lower socio-economic backgrounds and need the most assistance. • EMT and Paramedic: emergency medical technicians are needed across our four-county region. EMT’s, and often Paramedics, are our first responders. Our community is in need of additional support for training and educating in both these areas of discipline. • The Belhaven Community Chamber Welcome Center – Supports vis-iting boaters and guests to our area. We maintain our same Mission and Goals— Mission: The Belhaven Trout Tournament & Festival (BTTF) was estab-lished in 2023 as a fund-raising event for the Belhaven Chamber of Com-merce and Visitor Center with the mission of providing monetary support of the Beaufort County Community College Boatbuilding programs students pursuing careers in the marine industry. Goal: By providing funds for scholarships or ancillary expenses to students that may need help with costs associated to their education in the marine trades, our hope is to help fill positions in Beaufort County and surrounding areas where Marine Businesses can continue to provide qualified services to our boating community. The second goal is to promote local Belhaven busi-nesses with an influx of people attending the event. It is our sincere hope that you visit our webpage and mark your calendar to attend this wonderful family fun event!
