SCIENCE SPOT The Power of Public Television A Perspective from a 90s Mom When my kids were young it was a simpler time By that I mean there were fewer channels and shows to keep them entertained after school For many years PBS was our favorite site for thoughtful creative and engaging content Our family watched Barney Wishbone and Dragon Tales And where would we be without Bill Nye the Science Guy I don t think it s possible to say the name of that show without singing it For the purpose of this column I want to highlight the groundbreaking work of The Magic School Bus Zoboomafoo and Cyber Chase As a parent I was so grateful for these shows and characters Many of them linked to books and authors and I believe the episodes were an excellent introduction to STEM concepts for my kids Miss Frizzle is one of my favorite characters and I learned wonderful ways to amplify her energy in my own teaching The Kratt Brothers who can still be found on a variety of platforms were the cool adventurous older brothers that my sons loved to learn from In Cyber Chase the cartoon characters tackled problems collaboratively leveraging programming computers and technology This focus area was still developing for younger audiences and it was really fun to watch together when homework was done each day Closer to home there is a show on Idaho PTV that I have loved called Science Trek The producer and host Joan Cartan Hansen has been covering STEM topics geared towards children for many years As I reviewed the show s website I was excited to explore the companion podcast a link to career exploration and teacher resources connected to standards and curriculum I am jumping in right now to learn more about the Science of Lewis and Clark Joan if you are reading this article how cool would that be thank you for helping thousands of kids discover the Canyon Foot 1 4 Page Vertical 208 Grill 1 4 Page Vertical 2359 Overland Ave in Burley the 208 grill com 6 www southernidahokids com
SCIENCE SPOT world around them from their homes and classrooms throughout Idaho Maybe someday Joan will interview Miss Frizzle in a special animated episode That would be STEM azing https sciencetrek org With almost limitless channels websites and resources online in today s world here is a friendly reminder to check local programming and agencies to edu tain your kids and students I have found that a quick email to the providers of local content is a great way to make a connection and a new friend While the debates continue about screen time and technology especially for younger children I strongly believe that the right kind of content inspires kids to develop their sense of wonder Back to school means back to routines and formal learning but the time we make for informal learning will last for a generation Amy Christopherson Director CSI Mini Cassia Center and Idaho Science Mom Burley Kids Dental 1 2 Page Horizontal September 2024 7
