There is a lot of activity in the month of September October across our churches and association in SE Oklahoma We are looking forward to our Annual WMU meeting and the Brotherhood Wild Game Feed in September And we have added back our meal to our Annual meeting in October and we will be hosting the Oklahoma Baptist University handbell choir The University Ringers for a special concert after we eat that night and to get our evening worship service kicked off Remember that August was Ministry Wives Appreciation month and that October is Pastor Appreciation month One of the ways to show your appreciation to your pastor and his family is to reflect a cost of living allowance in your next year s budget We have seen unprecedented inflation which is currently sitting at 8 5 for the preceding 12 months according to the U S Labor Department data We have all experienced the rising costs of groceries insurance utilities and fuel in our area and I know you will want to reflect something in the budget lines for your pastor and staff as you evaluated the budget for next fiscal year Remember that a cost of living allowance is not a merit raise but only an adjustment to the purchasing power of your staff s compensation I have already heard reports from our churches addressing this for their pastor and I know you will do your best Be that person who will advocate for your pastor because it is awkward for them to approach this subject with the finance committee As I visit with our pastors I generally see two responses concerning this subject of Pastor Appreciation Month Well they forgot me again this year accompanied by a sense of frustration in ministry OR an overwhelming sense of thankfulness and gratitude for a church body remembering them and their family during this month of emphasis Pastor Appreciation month started back some 30 years ago so don t think your pastor will forget about this month and there is no excuse for a church to ignore or forget this small act of kindness Your pastor does a lot behind the scenes and if you look around there are fewer men going into the pastoral ministry each year So do not take your pastor for granted and start planning now on what you will do on that first Sunday in October and you will see how a little kindness and appreciation goes a long way Dr Mark A Boyd STATE MISSIONS OFFERING Edna McMillan State Offering Goal 1 2 million Oklahoma Baptists have a long history of stepping into areas of brokenness and meeting needs all to advance the Gospel In fact that is the very heart of this offering The Missions Offering is a very tangible expression of the common bond we have in Christ and the common mission we have to advance the Gospel in our state Prayerfully set a goal for your church and pray that God would bless the offering to reach every corner of our state in ministering the love of God to the lost and those in need Week of Prayer for the Edna McMillan State Missions Offering September 4 11th NEWS FROM THE
