Bulletin September 2020 15 The last two months have been a time of confusion as all of us have adjusted to new ways of working due to the upheavals brought about by COVID 19 As lockdown begins to ease and AFBI looks forward to re starting trial work the research scientists and senior management would like to take this opportunity to express our genuine appreciation to all technical and industrial staff who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to care for all our animals This includes the production of forage processing of manure and other tasks which ensure the smooth running of our farms During this time of crisis AFBI owes so much to the men and women who ensured that the health and welfare of all livestock across all our units was provided for Without our livestock teams and farm teams there would be no research at AFBI and we continue to recognise how valued all our staff are to keep the wheels of AFBI turning In closing the scientific staff would like to personally commend you for your flexibility in adjusting to new working schedules your willingness to accommodate high priority sampling and analysis and above all your diligence and commitment to ensure that high standards of animal care have been and continue to be upheld AFBI The staff at Strathclyde have been exceptional This whole situation happened so fast and everyone had to pull together to prepare the unit for the closure The staff then adjusted to the new working pattern they and were willing to help at all stages The animals have remained in good health and the unit is spotless The staff have continued to maintain a really positive can do attitude to the whole situation even now with their measuring tapes and signs in hand It is because of them we are ready to hit the ground running when we get the green light to restart research projects The Establishment Licence holder AWERB committee and Unit Manager cannot praise and thank them enough University of Strathclyde I truly believe all Animal Technicians UK wide have stepped up during this pandemic and have gone over and above to ensure the animals have had the best of care In our case we have the Cambridge COVID 19 vaccine studies running and it has been seamless which in no small part is due to the Technicians We have not had one person sick or late neither have they complained and I am hearing the same applies at most facilities It makes me very proud to be an Animal Technician at this time University of Cambridge Mira building IAT SEPT2020 indd 15 20 08 2020 10 10
16 September 2020 Bulletin I am writing to express my tremendous appreciation for all of our colleagues who have worked in our research facilities ensuring the continuing health and welfare of the animals during this extraordinary time I am very aware that they have routinely gone above and beyond our expectations to maintain the high standards required in our facilities throughout the period of lockdown as well as the challenges associated with ensuring that key supplies are obtained despite the challenges faced by our suppliers This in turn has enabled some key research projects to continue during the pandemic including those addressing issues associated with Covid 19 as well as others of wider significance I look forward to the time when we can return to more normal working conditions and when I will be able to thank them in person Thank you all The University of Southampton During the whole period the BSU facilities have been staffed on a 7 day week basis to ensure that animal welfare has been maintained to the high standards of the Animals Scientific Procedures Act It is recognised that this has been a very trying time with normal working patterns being disrupted requiring significant flexibility and adaptability by staff as they have had to adapt to new working arrangements and teams across sites Moreover they have had to increase potential exposure to the COVID 19 hazard by travelling to work and in some instances deal with the difficult issues of childcare and home schooling while attending work Despite these challenges the BSU staff at Nottingham have conducted their professional duties in an exemplary manner often taking on additional responsibility due to senior managers working from home in accordance with Government requirements It is also recognised that Animal Technicians have continued to maintain valuable genetically altered lines of mice and zebrafish Supporting on going essential research including research directly related to COVID 19 during this period Importantly they have also maintained the required legislative governance overview during a period when more senior colleagues have been working remotely It must not be forgotten that the administrative team and experimental officers have also contributed to the operation of the BSU by maintaining essential supplies of PPE livestock and supporting consumables ensuring Health and Safety arrangements are in place and processing Home Office documentation and financial transactions with our valued suppliers In summary the response to the COVID 19 pandemic has been a fantastic team effort by all involved This is truly appreciated and this recognition is very well deserved University of Nottingham IAT SEPT2020 indd 16 20 08 2020 10 10

Bulletin September 2020 29 xenopus toads ferrets and finally dogs which were housed in kennels on the roof The staff were mostly young lads and girls with a smattering of senior technicians elderly folk in their mid to late 20s I had joined just post the brown lab coat animal attendant era and the start of the white lab coated animal technician a small but significant status rise This was due in no small part to the efforts of Doug Short Dorothy Woodnott and other senior technicians who created the Animal Technicians Association ATA and the beginning of an exam structure I joined that organisation of course and became member number 408 As I recall in those days diet and bedding were not diverse We had 41B for rodents and SG1 for rabbits and guinea pigs both made by Dixons of Ware and one bedding supplier Ushers based somewhere in North London who supplied sawdust shavings and wood wool When I joined the NIMR there were over 90 Animal Technicians we had a football team the Scrapers 11 a cricket team and of course a clubhouse which held regular discos great for meeting girls socially well it was the swinging 60s and girls in those days did not tend to play football or cricket After a while I was posted to the insectarium which was part of an animal facility housed away from the main building and which must have started life as a swimming pool The lab was built on top and underneath was the animal facility the entrance at what would have been the deep end where we housed the larger animals rabbits etc ending up at the shallow end that only had room for hamsters cotton rats and snails a strange place to work Once I was bitten by a mongoose which according to the scientist who I was holding it for should not have come around from its anaesthetic as quickly as it did I like to think that I was almost unique in Animal Technology being bitten by a mongoose in the line of duty At some point in the mid 60 s Mr Short despatched me to Edgware General Hospital they had a small single story TB animal unit and the technician responsible for it was himself in hospital This building gave all the appearance of being a marginally converted WWII air raid shelter It just had guinea pigs in it their only diet was cabbage I was there for a couple of weeks and introduced the critters to the delights of SG1 another giant leap forward for Animal Technology IAT SEPT2020 indd 29 20 08 2020 10 10
