THE MESSENGER GOOD SAMARITAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER VOLUME 110 ISSUE 9 SEPTEMBER 2020 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK CREATING BEAUTY IN A SEASON OF UGLY As the election season ramps up into full gear we know the next couple months will be full of ugly People will be hurting angry aggressive hopeful and disappointed Relationships with neighbors friends co workers and family members will be under pressure and possibly torn apart by the tension already thick in the air Marginalized communities will become collateral damage in this political war Many of us will be triggered to rage shame fear It will be easy to pick up our swords and participate in the ugly bloodshed but what if we could add beauty instead of further maiming and disfiguring our world right now I am reminded of one of Jesus disciples on the night of his arrest grabbing his sword and swinging apparently aimlessly for he slices off the ear of a slave Lk 22 50 Upset griefstricken and adrenaline rushing this disciple reacts instinctively impulsively He ends up wounding what I must assume was an unintended victim someone as caught in the system of injustice as him In one Gospel account Jesus not only sternly rebukes the disciple who resorted to violence but also reaches out and touches the wound and heals it Lk 22 51 There are debates that need to be had right now in the public square There are conversations that need to be had with our neighbors right now as we choose our next leaders We will at times feel very threatened as these conversations take place just as that disciple with a sword did that night in Gethsemane Is it possible for us to put our away our swords as we have these conversations Can we have those dialogues without cutting one another deeply Can we dialogue in a way that doesn t cut off our neighbors ear and render them deaf to our voice Can we listen when Jesus says Enough violence No more Where we see someone wounded even if they are someone on the other side of the aisle can we reach out and touch their wound bring healing 1 1 I won t name call character attack or otherwise degrade It feels good for a moment but name calling gets me nowhere Name calling is the language of the exasperated It s what we do when we sense dead end in a conversation Feeling trapped and like we will make little headway we start thrashing about and lashing out It is also the worst thing we can do if we want to actually be heard or taken seriously It explodes a conversation and gives our opponent something to focus on other than the content of the point we are trying to communicate So I won t stoop to calling names not even calling names of the political candidates I abhor 2 I will pause Due to this pandemic most of my political conversations right now happen over social media Admittedly it is not the best platform by any means for such conversations because it is too easy to forget the humanity Continued on page 2
FROM THE PASTOR S DESK continued from page 1 CREATING BEAUTY IN A SEASON OF UGLY of the person typing on the other end So I have committed to pause None of us respond well when we are flooded blood pressure elevated heart rate elevated etc or triggered So I will stop and take some time to consider if I really want to respond and if so how Some of the questions I ve started asking myself Do I have a relationship with this person enough to know what is going on in their life their trails struggles and joys If I don t I m probably not responding in a way that values their full humanity Can I respond in love or am I just out to make a point Do I actually think they are open to having their mind changed Am I What is my hoped for outcome If I pause and come back and still feel the need to respond I do slowly thoughtfully and lovingly 3 I will actively listen One of the things I learned in some marital counseling training is that for an individual to feel truly heard they need to have their message accurately reflected back to them and at least some part of their message validated So it is important for the one listening to a mirror back what they hear and check that they got it right and b validate what they can about the other s perspective even if they can t validate everything So as I listen I try to first check that I understood correctly by asking clarifying questions and then try to figure out what if anything I can validate Too much communication completely misses the other person Active listening makes sure we connect and truly speak to each other even if we disagree 4 When I see that someone has been wounded in a conversation I will reach out to touch their wounds What does this look like Sometimes it is as simple as acknowledging that I see someone s pain or I see their humanity and I recognize the cost this is taking on their life It also may mean taking time to understand the pain of someone s past That may well be shaping their current position and their passion for it Until I take time to see and acknowledge that I will never be able to speak to the issue in a way they can hear When I think of the chaos swirling around Jesus on the night of his arrest it is also striking to me that Jesus sat Art By Rev Drew Willard Retired Florida UCC Minister In December of 1999 there was a call for artwork that imagined what Jesus would look like in the new millennium Sister Wendy a popular art historian on PBS TV was one of the judges This was also a time when people were apprehensive about what would happen to our computer systems when the calendar clicked over to 2000 It was about a week to go when the contest submissions were due and I was at a diner in Mystic CT doodling on a napkin with an idea I drew a sketch of Jesus crucified on the world but then I thought Y2K bugs the Apocalypse the end of the world I need to see Jesus dancing It s hard to dance with the world on your back as the song goes in Lord of the Dance but I imagine Jesus bearing that burden joyfully fearlessly and defiantly for the sake of justice peace This drawing was the basic design for my submission My portrayal of Jesus is a composite of several sources of inspiration including the Sinai icon of Christ Pantocrator Zorba the Greek and as a person of color It has been important to me as a white person to think of Jesus of Nazareth as a black man This helps me envision the other ness of God and challenge the temptation towards ethnocentric idolatry in other words racism 2 down and ate a festive meal with his friends Even when Jesus knew someone in the room would be betray him he still toasted ate and drank with him and that last meal probably wasn t nearly as somber as we imagine it In fact while politics seem to have been threatening his life for most of his three years in ministry Jesus ate and drank and otherwise engaged in merriment so much so that he developed quite a reputation as a glutton and a drunkard Mt 11 19 Though that reputation may not have been entirely accurate we do know he wasn t fasting the whole time that he partook in savoring good food drink and company Recently scholars like Rev Dr Mike Graves who visited us in March have drawn our attention to the fact that some of the first gatherings of Jesus followers dinner parties weren t somber affairs akin to a wake but were joyous occasions where those gathered enjoyed artists work shared good food listened to lectures had lively debates and even engaged in dancing This early form of worship likely reflected how Jesus and his friends had gathered Throughout his time in ministry no matter the dangers chaos and ugliness pursuing him there was always time for a party a meal always times to be interrupted to create some healing in the world even attend to the small stuff and always time to escape for some alone time or to take in the beauty of a sunset or a sunrise from a hillside We each have our own unique talents and gifts but I wonder how you could create some beauty or laughter festivity or community in the coming months God knows the world could certainly use more of it Our world is full of enormous serious heavy disturbing problems right now but we also must make time and space for moments of levity and joy beauty and art In fact it is all the more important and necessary at a time like this I plan to enter this fall with some intentionality and a readiness to eat and dance and make beauty in the face of the chaos and I hope you will too Peace Pastor Jen

FAST JUSTICE UPDATE A few weeks ago FAST held a virtual Rally for Mental Health and sent hundreds of emails to our County Commission encouraging them to fund the Coordinated Access Model in next year s budget This Coordinated Access Model acts as a central pathway for mental health and addiction services creating easy access for those looking for help From recent conversations with Commissioners and viewing recent Commission meetings FAST has learned that many Commissioners support a coordinated access model but say they need to wait to fund one until after they bring all the service providers together and streamline how they collect data FAST is aware however that there is a large group of the main service providers in our county who have already been working together for around two years to streamline data collection and create a coordinated access model It seems to us that the easiest and best way to get a coordinated access model up and running as soon as possible is to come alongside these providers instead of creating a plan from scratch In conversations with Commissioners some of them didn t know this plan existed So FAST is now following up with Commissioners to make sure they know about the providers plan and get clarity on what it would take for the county to fund this already moving plan for a coordinated access model PREPARE FOR HOUSE MEETINGS September is the month for our annual FAST house meetings where we ask everyone to share about the struggles they re dealing with in their day to day lives These house meetings give us a chance to build stronger relationships with each other help us identify what problems to tackle in the next year and provide an opportunity to invite others to join us in this important work Because of COVID 19 our team leaders are choosing to do their house meetings via Zoom If you are a network member be ready for a team leader to call you and invite you to their house meeting sometime in the next few weeks See info below HOW TO BE AN ANTIRACIST GROUP STUDY The Justice and Mercy Ministry is offering a virtual discussion of Ibram X Kendi s book How to Be an Antiracist You may purchase the book or request the church order a copy for you which will be available for pick up in the pantry during pantry hours Equal parts memoir history and social commentary this book challenges both mainstream and antiracist orthodoxy It reorients and reenergizes the conversation about racism as well as pointing us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other See ad page 3 of this newsletter How do we stand FAST TOGETHER Submitted by Bev Kelly HOUSE MEETINGS Each year our FAST justice ministry begins by holding House Meetings where we listen to the concerns of our people We know this year because of the Covid virus we will be hearing some very different stories illness and loss of friends and family members fears for those we know losing their jobs their homes stress of being alone unable to visit family especially those in hospitals and other facilities We need to share these and support one another If you have been a network member you should be receiving an invitation to one of these virtual meetings If you don t get an invitation please contact the Team Leader for the house meeting you wish to attend All meetings will be held on Zoom You can participate by phone or on your computer Whether or not you plan to be active in FAST we would still like you to be present at a meeting to share your story Submitted by Bev Kelly SATURDAY SEPT 12 2 00 LEADER REV JEAN COOLEY Phone 727 592 1774 email revsbjcooloey gmail com WEDNESDAY SEPT 30 6 00 LEADER RACHAEL WELLS Phone 321 745 9246 email rachaelwells knights ucf edu TBA WESTMINSTER SHORES LEADER REV BILL HULL Phone 914 730 0947 email cwhull4142 gmail com 4
