Jason timmons President Jason Timmons 6 president President betshira org This bulletin article is unquestionably going to be the most memorable bulletin article that I have had the opportunity to author I am completing writing it on the eve of Logan s Bar Mitzvah in fact I completely discarded my original article in exchange for this chance to share with you my personal reflections on the times Last June I knew that I would be serving as the President of our Congregation at the same time as Logan s Bar Mitzvah and I remember thinking what amazing timing I fully envisioned a sanctuary full of our family members our friends and Logan s numerous friends instead I will look into an empty sanctuary and see only a handful of our immediate family I imagined the feeling of being able to look out into the sanctuary and see the joy on all of the faces as Logan was called to the Torah instead I will wonder if people are able to login to the live streaming I looked forward to Logan enjoying the celebration after the service with his friends instead we will take a few photos and then head home We even postponed his Bar Mitzvah by a few months in hopes these experiences would be possible yet here we are I do realize that we are not alone in having the milestones of our lives disrupted and in fact are not even the first Bet Shira Bar Mitzvah to be disrupted We are learning this is just another instance of trying to find we are all terming the new normal Life at Bet Shira has not really returned to normal but as a community we are doing our best to create our new normal Under the spiritual leadership of Rabbi Herman Bet Shira has evolved from virtual only services to a combination of virtual and outdoor services Rabbi Herman along with our Ritual Programming and Technology Committees have been working very hard on creating a virtual High Holy day experience which will be augmented by a few outdoor in person service opportunities Cantor Andres Levy will be returning to Bet Shira well at least he will be joining us virtually We look forward to having him return in person one day in the future Bet Shira understands that due to the additional hardships imposed by the COVID pandemic people now are more in need of a spiritual experience than almost any other time in Bet Shira s history As a result Bet Shira has decided to open our virtual High Holy Day services up to the general public We kindly ask those who choose to join our virtual services to be make a voluntary donation which can be done directly through our website I find it fitting that while we are celebrating Rosh Hashanah a distinctive marker in time it also marks six months ago this week that Miami Dade declared a state of emergency and non essential businesses and public spaces were ordered closed Six months ago most of us thought all I need to do is get through the next two weeks Now we find ourselves six months later thinking When will this end How could we have imagined we would still be coping with this six months later I wish I had answers to these questions but sadly I don t and so I for one will continue to adapt To our entire congregation Melissa Logan Haley Gabriel and I wish you Shana Tova May this coming year bring all of us happiness health the opportunity to share time with family and friends and just maybe a sense of normalcy Jason Timmons President

Jewish Learning 14 Ren e B Rittner Director of jewish learning rrittner betshira org The JLC opened its doors virtually at the end of August to our new and returning students Creativity in teaching and learning is the name of the game and flexibility is a must for everyone involved What does learning at the JLC look like when it is virtual Picture a Hebrew class all of the students have access to the materials through Google Classroom To have smaller groups breakout rooms are used Each has a teacher at the helm At the same time the teacher shares a screen with the materials too The annotation section is used to circle words or syllables or letters that the student is reading Then the whiteboard is utilized so that students can practice writing the Hebrew words and letters While writing the words and practicing the reading the teacher and students can look at the Shoresh root of the Hebrew word and figure out its meaning At the end of the lesson the classes come back together At this time we play games that allow for movement One such game is Jewish Zoom Charades How does this work One student is sent to the waiting room The other students pick the Jewish concept that will be acted out All students act out the idea as the student returns to the room to guess It s active learning using the technology we have With our younger JLC students we are following their needs We teach by keeping them moving For example we use Jewish music and dance teach Jewish symbols by having them run through their house to find something that represents Shabbat for snack we send them out to gather their foods and then can teach the bracha that goes with the food they have returned We follow the needs of the students if the time of three hours is too long we let them do what they need Our goal is to make the student want to learn and love Judaism We also have a JLC padlet an area where students can write questions about what they want to learn Students can only see a question once it s posted by the moderator who can see all the questions and decides which questions will be posted The padlet can only be accessed by the link being shared The JLC is connecting with families mostly through the use of Remind as well as occasionally emailing through our email list by using our Facebook group page and lastly through out Google Classroom All families need to be sure to subscribe to each group Our Zoom Classroom codes do not change from week to week There is one for Sunday and one for Wednesday The codes and links can be found in the Google Classroom Sunday 813 4487 2917 Passcode 698486 Wednesday 921 0746 0664 Passcode 048227 Here are the codes to subscribe Google Classroom dnvzpau Remind send a text to 81010 with the message jlc2020 Facebook group BetShiraJewishLearningCenter Bet Shira Jewish Learning Center make sure you see the profile picture as the congregation and the cover photo the JLC logo Email List contact Renee to be added Upcoming Dates Sundays 9 13 and 9 27 Wednesdays 9 2 9 9 9 16 9 23 9 30
