Therefore as we have opportunity let us do good to all people especially to those who belong to the family of believers Galatians 6 10 SEPTEMBER 2017 IN THIS ISSUE Start Your Day in Worship by Barbara Whitlock It s the first Friday of the school year The bell has rung and the students were in their classrooms for about fifteen minutes when a heavenly sound rang out through the hallways It was the sound of a second grade class worshipping Break every chain break every chain break every chain As I made my way down to the classroom to catch a glimpse of the sight I hear another sound coming from the other wing It is another class starting their day in worship But it didn t stop there Making my way to the fourth grade wing I heard Mrs Robinson s class singing lights off hands raised in worship What a beautiful way to end our first week of the 2017 2018 school year And what a privilege it is to work at a school where worship to God is not only accepted but encouraged Can I be honest with you a minute There have been many days when I have not started off my day with worship to my heavenly Father He is always there waiting for me However I can get so wrapped up with getting everything packed up and loaded for my day dropping my son off at school and making sure he has a ride home that I forget the most important principle worship is the best way to start our day Our students and teachers know this and it blessed my heart to see them communicate so intimately with God As we ve heard many pastors say praises go up and blessings flow down It s those blessings that got me thinking Sometimes we can see blessings as big things a new job you have been praying for unexpected money received to pay a debt healing from a sickness But in reality blessings are all around us It s a blessing to be alive another day to tell others of God s goodness and faithfulness It is a blessing to see hear taste and feel It is a blessing to be in this family of believers It is a blessing to be known and to be loved by God Simple blessings but ones we so often take for granted This school year we want to emphasize to each student the importance of being able to recognize God s many blessings and to reassure them that they are indeed a part of our family here at Calvary God has each student and family here for this time and purpose He has a specific plan for each of us and every teachers staff and student are praying that God will move in their lives this school year Praying is a privilege we don t take for granted and we recognize that communicating with God is a tremendous blessing What s New at Calvary New and exciting things are happening at Calvary Academy Be the first to get the inside scoop on all the latest and greatest Continued page 4 Teacher Features Calvary Academy welcomes new teachers this school year We are so excited to have them here as part of the Calvary staff and would like to tell you a little bit about them Continued pg 3

SEPT 2017 Issue 10 2 We Are Family by Barbara Whitlock It s a new year with an exciting new theme Our students and families arrived the first day of school with a warm welcome back We made sure our returning families and our new families know that they are an important part of our Calvary family As they entered the foyer they saw the new banner that hung over head with our bible verse for the school year Therefore as we have opportunity let us do good to all people especially to those who belong to the family of believers We are looking forward to the opportunity to teach our students and to remind them that God has a specific purpose for them in the Calvary family and most importantly in His family Students and families arrive for the first day of school with smiles on their faces and an excitement for a wonderful school year Welcome Kindergarten Parents After the bell rang on the first day of school and our kindergarten parents knew their little ones were safe in their classrooms a breakfast was prepared for them to enjoy and to get to know other parents in their child s classroom We called this event the Boo Hoo Yahoo Breakfast Parents were greeted by Mrs Pender our school administrator They also got to hear from our Parent Ambassadors who shared their experiences as a first time parent at Calvary and encouraged these new kindergarten parents to ask questions and get involved We ended the morning praying a blessing over their children and welcoming them to the Calvary family Calvary Parent Ambassadors Kathy Tillman Lisa Wells Karilyn Paschal

SEPT 2017 Issue 10 Miss Kraiss 3 TEACHER FEATURES What motivated you to become a teacher I ve always wanted to be a teacher I have such a love and passion for children and learning I believe that teaching is my God given calling and I want to be able to help students grow academically spiritually emotionally and mentally What do you want your students to gain from having known you I want my students to gain the knowledge that they are loved No matter what happens I want them to know that they can come to me and I will help them with anything whether it is with school or something personal I want them to gain the self confidence to know that they are enough What do you enjoy most about teaching I definitely enjoy being with the students the most I love seeing their smiling faces in the morning and spending the day with them I love being able to interact with them and get to know all of them What are some of your interests hobbies Running working out reading cooking baking photography shopping and spending time with my niece and nephew Miss Kraiss and her 1st grade class Mrs Robinson What motivated you to become a teacher In all honesty I was trying to decide between being a nurse and a teacher but my college didn t offer nursing at that time What do you want your students to gain from having known you I hope they LOVE reading I hope they know that God s word will give them answers for all of life and I hope they will be adventurous in learning and not afraid to try new things What do you enjoy most about teaching I enjoy getting to know the students and their families I LOVE all the different abilities interests learning styles I see represented in my students At Calvary I love being in an environment where students work hard and motivate each other to learn more I am so impressed with what a beautiful clean facility we have What are some of your interests hobbies I enjoy reading travelling and socializing Mrs Robinson and her 4th grade class Miss Allen What motivated you to become a teacher I was first motivated to become a teacher while doing my senior thesis in college I worked at educating children about what they could do to help threatened and endangered turtles found in their area I found that sharing my passion for nature was something I wanted to continue to do What do you want your students to gain from having known you I hope my students gain their own passion and understanding for the natural world I hope that through sharing what I am passionate about it will spark a lifelong interest in them to continue to learn more about the world around them What do you enjoy most about teaching My favorite part about teaching is being able to connect with students and see an excitement for learning What are some of your interests hobbies My main interest is animals and I love to go to the zoo visiting different zoos when I travel I also love being outdoors hiking kayaking and snowshoeing I also enjoy reading all kinds of books and watching movies especially Disney movies Miss Allen and her 6th grade class Mrs Morgan What motivated you to become a teacher I had some great teachers There were some who saw that beyond my shy persona I was smart and creative They pulled these qualities out of me What do you want your students to gain from having known you When students leave my class I want my presence to have impacted their lives in such a way as to encourage them to become who God has called them to be I want them to know that their success in life in all areas is dependent on God being their number one priority I also want them to courageously share what I have taught them in Spanish class knowing they can reach nations for the Kingdom with this skill What do you enjoy most about teaching I enjoy my interactions with students and sharing my love for God and Spanish What are some of your interests hobbies Reading pleasure and professional creating things when time permits gifts like bookmarks singing and family time Mrs Morgan and her 7th grade class

SEPT 2017 Issue 10 4 What s New at Calvary There are many new and exciting things happening at Calvary this year and we want you to be the first to know Elementary Spanish Mrs Courtney is teaching conversational Spanish for grades st th 1 5 This added bonus to the lower grades will give them a strong foundation in learning the language and prepare our students for Junior High Spanish Jazz Band Calvary Academy is proud to announce that it now has a jazz band Jazz band began on Thursday September st 21 with approximately 30 students ranging th th from 6 8 grade Jazz band meets on Thursday mornings at 8 am Movie Night We will be having a movie th night for grades K 4 One class a month will get to enjoy a movie in our Extended Day room More details to come th Drama Club Even though the 8 grade class held a special production last year this is the official start of our Drama Club We ve had an overwhelming response from the students and are planning on some short performances during a handful of chapel services along with two productions in the Spring Sept Newsletter 16300 S State Street South Holland IL 60473 708 333 5471 www calvary academy com
