1OUR STORYEntering the yachting industry, after working in commercial shipping, made us aware of thesignificantly lower safety standards onboard yachts. Most evident differences were thefrequency of drills, the lack of insistence on safety protocols, the quality of technicaldocumentation and the lack of adherence to (or knowledge of) marine regulations. When starting Sentini Marine in 2011, our main focus was to provide excellent services toyacht engineering departments (including technical operations manuals) with integrity, knowledge of the industry and great personal service. Over time we realised that raisingsafety standards onboard was a bi-product of our services, as increasing information andthe accuracy with which its delivered, automatically makes a vessel safer for crew. Ratherthan a bi-product, crew safety then became our main focus, dictating the direction ourbusiness moved in.A near catastrophic accident resulted in the creation of the FATHOM app. Information in avessel safety manual had not been read and actioned by a crew member, resulting in aserious incident. A method of driving crew to read the safety manuals and systematicallytesting their knowledge of them, began to develop.Every service we provide to superyachts raises the safety culture onboard, and in doing so,increases safety for the individual crew member and the entire crew. 2TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATIONSentini Marine realised there was a large difference in the standard of documentationsupplied commercially to that delivered with a new build yacht. We found that time after time, yachts were delivered with poor 'as-built' drawings and veryfew had any form of technical operations manual. Having experienced both the commercialand yacht industries, we noticed that, unusually, yachting is way behind in standards andquality. We formed a partnership with WMT to bridge that gap.6

Sentini Marine Documentation Suite creates a single Technical Operations Manual, documenting both technical and safety knowledge of the systems and operations on-board avessel. The contents list can cover; all systems and equipment on-board, safety informationand protocols, SOLAS, bridge and deck operations and information. Collating all the buildand manufacturers information into one place, makes it a tool for the vessel’s lifetime.CONTENTSAll engineering system drawings are redrafted, correcting any errors that have been foundpost-delivery. The redraft will be in a colour format, laid out with all equipment in it'sgeographical location on board, making it easier for new crew to follow and easier to read inan emergency. All unnecessary information from the original drawings will be removed, further clearing up the drawing and making it easier to follow. The drawings will also besupplied in digital format allowing them to be edited and commented on, making them a toolfor planning for dry docks and fault finding. The content will be verified as correct with avessel survey before the final version is issued. SYSTEM DRAWINGS7

The Technical Operations Manual contain clear and concise operational instructionsproviding greater consistency with illustrations of equipment. It will include; an introductiondescribing the system and its equipment, a detail of how it operates, moving on toinstructions and basic maintenance, and any cautions and warnings that may cause injury orfailure/damage to equipment. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONSProfessionally drawn illustrations with accurate dimensions and labelling, enable the user tounderstand the operating instructions quickly, combining warnings and cautions with aconcise illustration of operation. Whether your vessel was built to accommodate a specific tongue, and the situation has nowchanged, or if you want to cater for a multicultural crew, the language of your technicaldocumentation and labelling may now need translating. Good information is only useful if itcan be understood and applied, we use a team of translators which specialise in technicalauthoring, ensuring you get accurate translations. TRANSLATIONS9

Concise Drawings and Operational Procedures - Good information is imperative whendealing with an emergency situation or a machinery breakdown. Sentini MarineDocumentation Services ensures that crew have accurate drawings and operationalprocedures at their finger-tips, when they need it most. New Crew Vessel Familiarity - In an industry that sees new crew joining mid-season or at thestart of shipyard periods, clear and concise documentation allows new crew members torapidly familiarise themselves with the vessel."Increasing the quality of information, training, and vessel familiarity will in turnincrease safety on board."Passing on Build Engineer Knowledge - This is an opportunity for build experience andknowledge to be documented and reproduced in a format enabling it to remain with thevessel and be passed on to new crew members in a swift and efficient manner.Shipyard Preparation - The digital version of the manual can be utilised to help managechange orders and warranty issues and information can easily be passed on to the shipyardin preparation for a yard period. Changes to the vessel during service and refit can be easilyupdated in the documentation, using our maintenance and update service, keeping themanuals up-to-date at all times.Increased Safety and Reduced Human Error - Damage to a vessel through human error, canoften be avoided by increasing experience and knowledge. Good quality documentation cansignificantly reduce costly mistakes on board."Good quality documentation is an investment into the future of the vessel."THE BENEFITS10

WHAT DOES THE MANUAL SAY?The week before a flag state visit can be the only time a crew member opens the vessel'ssafety manuals, they have a good working knowledge of their working area, and drills aresufficiently practiced, but is this enough?FATHOM creates a bridge between the crew's day to day working and the vessel safetymanuals. With the backing of senior crew, compulsory weekly testing has shown to raise thesafety levels onboard. 3WHY DO SUPERYACHTS NEED FATHOM?Crew knowledge of vessel safety protocols is critical to the vessel, but unpreparedness onlycomes to light in an emergency. Current drills and familiarisation methods need to beunderpinned with a systematic way of familiarising crew with a specific vessel, and testingtheir ongoing knowledge of its safety equipment and protocols.FATHOM has two purposes; ensuring that crew know what is written in their vessel safetyand technical documentation, and proving that they are initially and continually familiarisedwith the vessel. FATHOM FAMILIARISATION SYSTEM13

Page 14

Find theemergencybilge suctionvalve.EFFECTIVE FAMILIARISATION We recommend 10 multi-choice questions per week based on the vessels safety manuals, and 10 location tasks requiring an NFC tag to be scanned on a specific piece of equipment ormachinery. This little and often testing will effectively increase familiarity with their vessel. An module for new crew, with a more intense testing schedule, ensures they know the mostimportant emergency information, protocols and equipment before they begin.Additional modules can be included to cover technical questions based on the vessel'stechnical manuals, diving deeper into the crew's knowledge of their vessel.14

Page 15

REVISEThis section gives crew the option to complete tests and evaluate their knowledge withoutthe results being monitored by senior crew. It shows them where the gaps in theirknowledge are, giving them the oppotunity to improve. There is a NFC tag scan button, this allows crew to scan a tag that they see around the vesselon a piece of equipment or machinery that they are not familiar with. Again, filling gaps inknowledge without relying on other crew.TESTRESULTSCrew can view their test scores immediately, allowing them to see what they got wrong andlearn from it. In the results section, they can see their average scores and aim to improve.Crew results are logged on the Senior Crew Dashboard and collated into a report eachmonth (see REPORTS section for more details).ON-LEAVECrew are only required to take tests when onboard, so to avoid annoying notifications andfailed test results, crew toggle the 'on-leave' button in the app when leaving the ship. Complacency in crew competence can result in injury or a serious incident, andunfortunately this complacency is common in yachting. Testing crew regularly on theirknowledge of the vessel, dispels the cloud of uncertainty over what they actually know. A notification will pop up each week to remind crew of their scheduled, multiple-choice testin each module. These tests are listed in the test section, disappearing once completed. The Physical Familiarisation test requires the crew to move around the vessel scanning theappropriate tags for the equipment listed. If certain areas aren't available due to guestsbeing onboard or painting/maintenance work being carried out, the question can beskipped. Skipped questions are monitored and reported.15
