Spring Summer Edition THE 6 MOST COMMON HIP INJURIES FROM FALLING One of the most common injuries in seniors is a hip fracture after suffering a fall It tends to happen due to muscle weakness balance problems impaired vision chronic illness side effects from medications or a wet bathtub or oor While hip injuries happen frequently and aging patients are more prone to these types of injuries it s important to note that younger patients aren t immune to them 1 Bursitis Bursitis occurs when a person experiences in amed bursa which are lubricated uid lled sacs that serve as cushions between the joints Typical symptoms include tenderness of the hip feeling warm to the touch feeling pain with movement or after prolonged periods of inactivity 2 Labral tear The labrum is the ring of cartilage that cushions the socket in your hip joint When this part of the body is injured you ll likely feel pain that radiates to your groin a clicking sensation and limited range of motion One of its worst complications is osteoarthritis which in turn can cause bone spurs 3 Dislocation The hip is composed of a balland socket joint where the head of the femur the thigh bone goes into the socket in the pelvis Dislocation occurs when trauma such as a fall causes the femoral head the ball portion to come out of the socket When this happens the person experiences acute pain Depending on the severity of the damage the doctor may be able to manipulate the patient s bone back into place without the need for surgery However certain instances do require surgical intervention 4 Fracture Most hip fractures require surgery When a person experiences a hip fracture they feel acute pain in their hip groin and upper thigh area It happens often to senior adults and it often results in the inability to continue living on their own People with osteoporosis have a higher risk of fracturing their hip during a fall 5 Hip strain Hip strain injuries occur when the muscles and tendons surrounding the hip experience trauma such as a hard hit during contact sports a car crash or a fall Because these muscles extend over a person s abdomen or gluteus the pain may also radiate to these areas 6 Snapping Hip Syndrome This condition gets its name from the snapping sound made when the patient gets up walks runs or makes any other hip or leg movements The sound is created by the iliotibial band popularly known as the IT band which is the tissue that connects hip muscles to the tibia the bone between the knee and the ankles Risk Factors for Hip Injuries As previously mentioned age is one of the biggest risk factors for experiencing the kind of fall that will result in a serious hip injury That being said there are also the following Physical inactivity Nutritional de ciencies Chronic illness Gender women tend to lose bone density at a faster rate than men Slippery rugs Inadequate lighting Clutter Intense physical activity with no rest days Participating in contact sports Substantial alcohol consumption Smoking If you recently fell and are experiencing hip pain or discomfort seek advice from your doctor or orthopedic clinic and get back to doing the things you love https orthotoc com most common hip injuries from falling SENIOR S DIGEST Seniors Digest_Spring_Summer_2021 indd 9 9 8 19 2021 9 41 58 AM

Spring Summer Edition ROCK Your way to RECOVERY By Glynis Scrivens Rocking chairs are associated with relaxation mothers rocking babies to sleep and workers rocking on their veranda at the end of the day They provide mild exercise for the weakest of muscles soothe the stressed and promote feelings of calm But did you know they can also be therapeutic A famous rocker We all remember seeing images of President John F Kennedy sitting in his rocking chair in the 10 Oval O ce His physician Dr Janet Travell prescribed them for his chronic back pain The rocker proved so helpful that he ended up buying 14 so he d never have to be without one whether at Camp David on Air Force One or on the family estate He even bought them as presents for visiting dignitaries What health problems are they used for Rocking is now used as a therapy for those suffering both physical and mental problems Most studies have been of elderly patients but all age groups including premature babies have experienced improvement Studies show the following therapeutic bene ts Relief of back pain When the brain is engaged in sending motor impulses down the spinal cord in order for the legs to work the rocker this blocks the pain impulses They are prevented from reaching the brain This enables the lower back muscles to relax Improvement in depression and anxiety among dementia patients Nancy Watson of the University of Rochester US found that patients needed less pain medication after rocking and their psychological and emotional well being improved Improvements in balance were also recorded SENIOR S DIGEST Seniors Digest_Spring_Summer_2021 indd 10 8 19 2021 9 42 24 AM

Spring Summer Edition All About Falls The problem and prevalence of falls Falls are a major health issue in the community with around 30 of adults over 65 experiencing at least one fall per year This is set to increase as Australia s population ages with the proportion of people aged over 65 predicted to increase from 14 3 million people in 2010 to 23 8 1 million people in 2050 With a stable incidence rate the cost of falls is expected to rise to around 1 4 billion by 2051 Falls prevention programs need to be developed in order to reduce falls incidence rates to prevent a huge strain being placed on the medical system The cost of falls Further to the nancial cost of falls on the medical system there 12 Falls are a major health issue in the community with around 30 of adults over 65 experiencing at least one fall per year will also be a greater need for hospital beds From 2010 240000 bed days per year to 2051 450000 bed days per year the number of hospital bed days per year needed due to falls will nearly double The utilisation of nursing homes due to falls has also been predicted to rise from around 800000 beds in 2010 to nearly 1 8million by 2051 Falls are physically very costly Falls are the leading cause of injury related hospitalisation in persons aged 65 years and over and account for four percent of all hospital admissions in this agegroup Injuries from falls Falls account for 40 of injuryrelated deaths and one percent of total deaths in this age group Depending on the population under study between 22 60 of older people suffer injuries from falls 10 15 suffer serious injuries 2 6 suffer fractures and 0 2 1 5 suffer hip fractures The most common injuries that require hospitalisation comprise femoral neck fractures other fractures of the leg fractures of radius ulna and other bones in the arm and fractures of the neck and trunk In terms of morbidity and mortality the most serious and costly of these fall related injuries is fracture of the hip Elderly people recover slowly from hip fractures and are vulnerable to post operative and bed rest complications In around 25 cases hip fractures result in death and of those who survive around one third of them never regain complete mobility SENIOR S DIGEST Seniors Digest_Spring_Summer_2021 indd 12 8 19 2021 9 42 39 AM

Primary school in the By Francis Cox A u t u m n E d i t iEdition on Spring Summer 60S we used pen quill and ink in special ruled booklets Those inkwells caused no end of mischief mainly for the girls pigtails I am sorry to say There was LOTS of rote drummed into us If you walked around the school during class you would hear the droning from nearly every classroom I got to do that a bit because I lucked into being a milk monitor in Grade 3 which meant I went down during class time to take crates of 1 3 pint milk bottles around to each classroom in time for little lunch One for everybody It was a great lurk You had to make sure the crates weren t left in the sun though It could go off fairly quickly The kids used to play ying saucers icking the gold foil tops from the bottles There were no fans or air conditioning If you were lucky you might sit near a window For someone like me that was also a good place to daydream I must admit it was pretty hard to learn during the sweltering summers I m only 65 but primary school today doesn t much resemble what I remember at Graceville State School For a start I went to school in bare feet 9 or 10 months of the year until probably about grade six The signal for shoes each year was when the cracks in my heels got too deep from the cold Tough feet were great on the gravel streets of the 2 mile walk to school and I could walk right over prickles until they were really brown and spiky in the late summer Once when our teacher was sick we had the deputy principal Mr Hagan He was grouchy and made us learn the 13 times table which I still just about remember to this day Some things even red wine can t eradicate I also got out of class time on a few occasions for the wrong reasons I think I got the cane three times from the headmaster Twice on the legs and once on the hand Since I was guilty each time I never held a grudge It didn t seem to do me much harm My stepfather used the ironing cord if he got mad which I think was worse We all walked or cycled ourselves to school except maybe for the rst day But then neither was there any trouble with that that I can recall Besides you usually had a group to shi ack with on the way At regular morning parades we met in the sun in the quadrangle We said the Lord s prayer and sang God Save The Queen Nothing about the governor General In summer someone fainted almost every day from the sun In the early years we learned to write on washable slates with chalk except for copy plate writing where Not too many re nements but I had a great time at primary school and made friends I still have to this day SENIOR S DIGEST Seniors Digest_Spring_Summer_2021 indd 15 15 8 19 2021 9 42 57 AM

Spring Summer Edition Challenging Times By Tony Robinson Think we have it tough in 2021 No it s far from the worst period in Australian history Huge unemployment numbers social upheaval this was the Great Depression which began in 1929 and ended with the onset of the Second World War in 1939 My parent s generation were raised at this time and saw this as a lesson in life It taught them to be frugal decent hard working people who were not entitled as the youth of today I repeatedly heard them say they were lucky to have such tough formative years because that taught them what matters the value of community helping others less fortunate put their priorities straight and they never forgot those lessons Young people today have never dealt with hardship or deprivation as older generations have By mollycoddling this current crop we ve done them a huge disservice smoothing the path for them every child gets a prize gold stars for everyone for just turning up We have removed the very things that are crucial to a person s learning and development Today we have modern problems I was forced to wear a mask in the store the plane was late I had to wait two hours and on top of that the coffee offered was cold The internet signal was bad so I couldn t google what I wanted shock horror A fully rounded person needs to have failed to understand the entire scope of the human experience It s like a sine wave on an oscilloscope many ups and downs Life is tough and full of lessons we learn from failure not utopia 20 SENIOR S DIGEST Seniors Digest_Spring_Summer_2021 indd 20 8 19 2021 9 44 01 AM

Spring Summer Edition The Most Magical Moment of My Life by Lily Samuels If you had a superpower what would it be He asked me anticipation glowing in his 8 year old eyes I could tell he was shing again not really interested in what I would choose waiting more for his chance to tell me yet again that he wished he could y My brother was obsessed with ying and had the bruises to prove it Today I didn t even get the chance to answer Mine would be ying that would be so cool He sighed with such longing such pure childhood yearning it was hard to stay annoyed His pace quickened and my small frame struggled to keep up It was always like this the walk home from school Thankfully we weren t expected to hold hands anymore that had been humiliating for him and awkward for me when he walked quickly like this Besides although only 5 years old I was far too intelligent to leave his protective side An old soul my grandmother called me thinking of how lazy he could be and my mother s many battles to get him just to shower let alone help around the house A smile touched my lips if only she could see him now in nature s shower I almost wished I had a bar of soap with me would be nice to have a night free of their arguing The wind picked up and I shivered Winter had only just begun but already the air was icy I clung to the umbrella my hand burning from the cold My thoughts drifted to home I knew when we arrived the heater would be blazing Our grandmother would greet us merrily and immediately command we change out of our wet things Then she d get busy fussing around the kettle and preparing hot Milo The thought spurred me on and I picked up the pace At that moment another gust of wind stronger than the rst hit me from behind A small cry escaped my lips and my free hand instinctively grabbed the umbrella tightly Hearing my cry my brother turned back his eyes wide with amazement A feeling of pure euphoria engulfed me as I realised with delight that my feet were no longer touching the ground Instead they were ailing about in mid air I was ying My heart soared he was right this was the most magical feeling I had ever experienced in my entire 5 years of living And then it was over just like that No more than a few seconds at best yet creating a memory I knew would last with me a lifetime Jealousy consumed my brothers face he snatched the umbrella his chubby frame trying to replicate my ying experience to no avail The large droplets of rain that splashed down on me couldn t wash away my enormous grin I think I ll try invisibility next Then the rain came wet heavy droplets blurred my vision He handed me the umbrella chivalrously and I gladly accepted even though I knew it was his desire to play in the rain more than my welfare he was concerned with I shook my head struggling to understand his obsession What s so good about ying I wondered What would make it better than walking or running He probably thought it would be easier I determined SENIOR S DIGEST Seniors Digest_Spring_Summer_2021 indd 21 21 8 19 2021 9 44 42 AM
