Hearing aids can help lower the chance of dementia by Rich Gelfand Editorial Associate N early 30 percent of people in their 50s suffer from hearing loss For people in their 60s it s 45 percent and for those in their 70s it s over 66 percent Researchers offer three ways in which untreated hearing loss and dementia could be linked It may be that the constant strain of having to decipher sounds over the years overwhelms the brains of people with hearing loss leaving them vulnerable to dementia Those who can t hear well can become socially isolated leading to less mental stimulation and eventually cognitive decline Most importantly hearing loss results in tissue reduction in the hearing portion of the brain which is also responsible for functions such as memory learning and thinking According to one study mild hearing loss is associated with a two fold greater risk for dementia while severe hearing loss increases the chance by five times How hearing aids can help Hearing aids are useful in improving the hearing and speech comprehension of people who have hearing loss that results from damage to the small sensory cells in the inner ear called hair cells This is called sensory neural hearing loss The damage can occur as a result of disease aging injury from noise or taking certain medications A hearing aid magnifies sound vibrations entering the ear Surviving hair cells detect the larger vibrations and convert them into neural signals that are passed along to the brain The greater the damage to a person s hair cells the more severe the hearing loss and the greater the hearing aid amplification needed to make up the difference There is help Hearing aid technology has improved a lot over the past few decades Digital hearing aids have become more intuitive and have more features to help you communicate better in difficult listening situations Rechargeable batteries eliminate having to replace tiny batteries An experienced hearing professional will take the time to find the right device for you and customize the settings to match your lifestyle We recommend contacting David DeFillipo and his staff of highly experienced caring and dedicated professionals at Precision Hearing in Stratford They have been helping people with customized hearing solutions for over 35 years Conveniently located at Ryders Landing Shopping Center right next door to People s United Bank on Main Street in Stratford or the River Road coming from Shelton They have the knowledge experience and state ofthe art products to get you hearing better again N Precision Hearing Specialists 88 Ryders Landing Stratford CT 06614 203 381 9555

Starting a New Chapter How to Successfully Transition to Skilled Nursing W hen a loved one moves to a skilled nursing facility a new chapter begins Like any change navigating a successful transition takes time and effort At The Nathaniel Witherell a shortterm rehabilitation and skilled nursing facility located in Greenwich Connecticut helping ease those transitions is Justine Vaccaro LMSW its director of social work Just like the first day of school for a child letting go of a parent s hand can be hard This is true even when the child has become an adult and their parent is the one going off on their own Families need reassurance that their loved one will be well cared for says Vaccaro The transition period for our residents is about three months but it can take up to six months for the family to really come to terms with the change For some the first time a parent refers to the new living arrangement as home is a wonderful sign that he she has settled in For others this is difficult to hear When a resident goes out to lunch and then says they re ready to go home but are referring to the Witherell that s hard on some families she notes This is especially true for spouses who are now living apart Vaccaro and her staff devote time to counseling residents but she also spends just as much time with family members Much of that doesn t even relate to the resident s care she says It s about helping the family realize that their loved one is really okay and that although that parent s life is different now it is still joyful she says Here Vaccaro offers tips for making a successful transition to skilled nursing care for both residents and their families Familiarity brings comfort Keeping your loved one near home or in a community based facility helps Because the Witherell is town owned residents get the added comfort of living among former Greenwich neighbors old friends or colleagues Tap every resource The recreation staff chaplaincy department and on staff social workers are all there to get to know each resident individually They meet with everyone and share what your loved one enjoys hobbies especially Keep in mind that prior interests like golfing and swimming are less feasible now However knowing that your loved one enjoys golf means that staff can make sure they get to enjoy tournaments on television Be a joiner Specific interest groups like bridge club knitters circles Bible study groups or men s groups help residents make friends based on common interests Encourage your loved one to seek out these groups Be realistic If your loved one was always a loner it s unrealistic to expect a metamorphosis into a social butterfly now At the Witherell residents who are less social are encouraged to enjoy their solo activities in common areas which increases socialization and prevents isolation Avid readers might enjoy their book in the sunfilled library or puzzle makers are encouraged to work on their latest challenge in the solarium as other events occur in close proximity

Maximize your Social Security benefits T o have a successful financially secure retirement one must have enough income to live on The larger one s Social Security benefit is the easier it is to meet that need So it s something of a puzzle that so many individuals are deciding to take their benefits early A study last year from the Government Accountability Office GAO reported that 72 8 of retirees begin their benefits before reaching normal or full retirement age Early benefits are lower benefits The table below shows just how much benefits will be reduced based upon the year of one s birth Note that the spousal benefit also will be reduced creating the potential of financial insecurity for the widow or widower For those born in 1954 retirement with full benefits may begin in 2020 at age 66 The table shows the full retirement age for those born in later years Retiring at age 62 triggers a 25 cut in benefits Looked at another way one can boost one s Social Security benefit by one third by waiting until age 66 to begin draw How many years of collecting full benefits will it take to offset the four years of taking no benefits at all The answer is 12 years if full retirement age is 66 One needs to live to age 78 to break even on the decision to wait for the full retirement age At age 62 that s pretty far off on the horizon Perhaps the early retirees are not being so irrational after all ing it What s more if one continues working from age 62 to age 66 the additional earnings record and Social Security taxes paid also will increase the eventual benefit That larger benefit will be the basis for future inflation adjustments and can translate into substantially higher lifetime income Another perspective Still the thought process of someone who is 62 might go something like this If I don t take my early benefits how much am I leaving on the table Some people are under the impression that Social Security is not a good investment Not true Imagine that Don s annual benefit at normal retire What about the additional credit for delaying retirement to age 70 Each month of delay past full retirement age boosts the benefit by 2 3 of 1 or 8 per year FULL RETIREMENT AGE AND THE REDUCED BENEFIT AT AGE 62 Primary Percent Amount reduction PER 1 000 Spouse Percent Amount reduction Year of birth Normal or full retirement age Number of reduction months 1943 1954 66 48 750 25 00 350 30 00 1955 66 and 2 months 50 741 25 83 345 30 83 1956 66 and 4 months 52 733 26 67 341 31 67 1957 66 and 6 months 54 725 27 50 337 32 50 1958 66 and 8 months 56 716 28 33 333 33 33 1959 66 and 10 months 58 708 29 17 329 34 17 1960 and later 67 60 700 30 00 325 35 00 Source Social Security Administration

ment age would be 16 000 per year and he chooses to begin an early benefit of 12 000 per year at age 62 When he reaches age 66 Don realizes that he really will need 16 000 per year after all To achieve that he buys a single life annuity of 4 000 per year Could he buy that with the 48 000 in early benefits he s collected No he could not not even close According to a recent study the commercial cost of an inflation adjusted single life 4 000 annuity for a male would be 71 000 higher for females who have long life expectancies As a group retirees are living longer and longer Most people will live to break even on a decision to delay their retirement Money magazine also reported that life expectancy for 65 year old men is 84 and for women it s 86 5 For a retired couple there s a 50 chance that one partner will be alive at age 92 Planning for couples When a husband and wife each have earnings records the choices are more complicated and more important to understand Each partner has a basic benefit plus a spousal benefit but may only collect the larger benefit They don t have to claim both at the same time For example one spouse might begin benefits early while the other waits until age 66 or later to begin Another factor to be considered is that a divorced spouse whose marriage lasted at least ten years and who is currently not married may apply for spousal benefits If the ex spouse is collecting benefits the spousal benefit is available at age 62 If both parties are 62 or older and the divorce occurred at least two years ago spousal benefits may be available whether or not the primary earner has begun to claim them N POPULAR GRANDBABY NAMES Rank Name Number Name Number The Social Security Administration has compiled the frequency of baby names going back to 1919 based upon applications for Social Security cards In 2018 the five most popular names for girls were Emma Olivia Ava Isabella and Sophia For boys the top five were Liam Noah William James and Oliver 1 James 4 764 644 Mary 3 328 565 2 John 4 546 819 Patricia 1 562 727 3 Robert 4 535 897 Jennifer 1 466 854 4 Michael 4 323 074 Linda 1 448 194 5 William 3 631 876 Elizabeth 1 436 232 Name popularity varies considerably over time and the variability is greater for girls than boys The table here shows the all time top ten names for 1919 2018 6 David 3 560 660 Barbara 1 406 173 7 Richard 2 477 879 Susan 1 105 188 8 Joseph 2 367 801 Jessica 1 044 492 9 Thomas 2 167 014 Sarah 995 436 10 Charles Karen 985 261 On the Social Security Administration s website one may search for the most popular names by state by year by decade and more 2 124 748 Source www ssa gov OACT babynames decades century html

Six Predictors of Happiness in Retirement A study of adult development has been carried out at Harvard for roughly the last century Three groups have been tracked 268 Harvard graduates born about 1920 90 middle class gifted women born about 1910 and 456 socially disadvantaged men from inner cities born about 1930 Some of the results of the study were reported in Business Insider https www businessinsider com things that make people live longer happier lives 2018 8 Data on these three groups were collected throughout their lives As they reached their 70s the retirees were classified as Happy Well SadSick or Prematurely Dead What life events made a person more likely to fall into one category or the other What did those in the Happy Well category have in common No smoking or drinking Heavy smokers were ten times more likely to be prematurely dead where heavy means three packs of cigarettes a day However the effects on health still could be discerned among pack a day smokers even if they quit by age 45 Drinking was found to create stress in one s life rather than relieving it More education Some of the inner city men went on to college despite their disadvantages Interestingly their health at age 70 was roughly the same as that of the Harvard grads Those who did not pursue their education aged prematurely their health at age 70 was similar to that of the Harvard grads at age 80 A happy childhood Whether a mother made a child feel loved was a better predictor than class or achieving a high income Having a strong stable father figure in contrast to an impoverished father tended to inoculate men to future pain lemons into lemonade and humor not taking oneself too seriously Poorer outcomes came from being passive aggressive living in denial acting out and retreating into fantasy Generativity Giving back to the community enriches the giver as much as it enriches the community From the study Among all three samples generative men and women at 50 were threeto six times as likely to be among the Happy Well in old age as among the Sad Sick In all three Study cohorts mastery of Generativity tripled the chances that the decade of the 70s would be for these men and women a time of joy and not of despair All of these observations seem unremarkable and intuitively clear but it s nice to have the science behind them N KEYS TO HAPPINESS Strong relationships Some of the men and women who started out with wealth and talent nevertheless were not doing well in their 70s Those who succeeded often had greater emotional intelligence an aptitude for building and maintaining the relationships in their lives Coping skills Having mature responses to life s challenges was found to be common among the Happy Well and almost absent among the SadSick Among the mature responses are altruism suppression turning No smoking or drinking More education A happy childhood Strong relationships Coping skills Generativity

Ghouls Come In Many Guises and They Read Obits Learn how to avoid scams after a loved one s death by Peter J O Connell Editorial and Research Associate One of the most frightening of legendary creatures is the ghoul an evil being who robs graves and feeds on corpses Ghouls abound today but they don t look like what you might see in a horror movie or TV show or illustration in a graphic novel They look just like you and me Chances are in fact that you might not see them at all your contact with them will be by phone or computer Today s ghouls are scamsters who prey on the grief stricken and their techniques are legion Obituaries and death notices are among their favorite tools How they do it Identity theft using obituaries A deceased s survivors want the world to celebrate the life that their loved one led So they put a lot of information into obituaries and death notices birthdate and birthplace address occupation beneficiaries family members mother s maiden name hmm Criminals troll obituaries and death notices for the wealth of personal information that they can find there And they use that info to construct scams that allow them to do such things as access existing accounts open new accounts etc Burglarizing the bereaved One of the vilest of crimes is when burglars hit a family home when they know from obituaries and death notices that no one will be there the residents will be mourners at a memorial service or burial Money You owe it It s owed you One frequent scam has two faces A debt collector may call to tell you that you are responsible for the deceased s debts and need to pay up now Using personal information that they have acquired about your loved one these conmen and women can sound legitimate and even threaten legal action The other face of the con is that the scamster may present himself or herself as an insurance agent or lawyer who is notifying you that you have been left a large life insurance policy or an inheritance and that you will receive it once you pay a premium or fee Sometimes the individual may claim to have secret documents tapes DVDs etc from the deceased that will be released to you once you send or transfer money The long lost and the helpful Funerals are a time to reconnect with family those you know and those you don t They are also a time when longlost relatives may show up claiming that they are owed something If such a situation occurs involving you you owe it to yourself to contact other relatives to confirm the individual s identity perhaps too you should contact a lawyer concerning the individual s claims Scamsters also may show up in the guise of spiritual advisers Shun these advisers and rely on a grief counselor or religious leader known to your family prior to the loss of your loved one What you can do ObituariesHelp org is an informative and respected website designed to offer resources for obituaries funerals and genealogy search In an article on the site Avoid Identity Theft from Obituaries Melanie Walters writes The best way to avoid identity theft from your loved one s obituary is to take care of financial and audit issues before the obituary is published Close accounts and notify all creditors banks and credit reporting agencies of the deceased s passing The next best thing is to limit the information on the obituaries so that there isn t a resume of details that list every occupation award and detail of the person s life So ghouls can be defeated by good planning even if you don t have magical powers

Target Elder Financial Abuse There was a national uproar in March upon the report that 50 people had been indicted for cheating related to college admissions Allegedly several dozen wealthy parents paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to someone who would arrange for phony SAT tests Another strategy was paying bribes to coaches to designate students as recruited athletes which virtually guaranteed admission As disturbing as this news was it overshadowed a far more significant event that also happened in March Arrests by the FBI The U S Attorney s Office and the FBI announced a major sweep of elder fraud cases The cases involved more than 260 defendants from around the world with total alleged losses by their victims of over 750 million The action follows a similar fraud sweep last year This year s action involved twice as many fraud victims 28 more criminal defendants and 28 more in losses than last year As welcome as this development is it may be only the tip of the iceberg Many seniors are reluctant to report when they have been victimized for fear that family members may conclude that their competence has been impaired A CORNUCOPIA OF SCAMS Fraudsters are very resourceful in trying to separate seniors from their money Examples of actual financial frauds Lottery phone scams Callers convince seniors that a large fee or taxes must be paid before they can receive lottery winnings Romance scams Victims are lulled into believing that their online paramour needs funds for a U S visit or some other purpose Grandparent scams Seniors are told that their grandchildren are in trouble and need money to make rent repair a car or even pay bail IRS imposter scams Fraudsters pose as IRS agents and claim that victims owe back taxes in some cases demanding to be paid in gift cards Broken computers Caller claims that a problem has been detected on the victim s computer but that repair is possible over the internet upon payment of a fee Sham business opportunities Victims are persuaded to invest in business opportunities or investments that turn out to be bogus or Ponzi schemes Don t do these things Some common sense tips on how to avoid becoming a victim Don t share personal information with anyone you don t know Don t pay a fee for a prize or lottery winning Don t click on pop up ads or messages Delete phishing emails and ignore harassing phone calls Don t send gift cards checks money orders wire money or give your bank account information to a stranger Don t fall for a high pressure sales pitch or a supposedly lucrative business deal If a scammer approaches you take the time to talk to a friend or family member Keep in mind that if you send money once you ll be a target for life Remember it s not rude to say NO A good rule of thumb is if it s too good to be true it s likely a scam When a fraudster makes contact The Federal Trade Commission is looking for help from the public in combating fraud You can report an attempted scam at 1 877 FTC HELP 1 877 382 4357 or you can file a report online at https www ftccomplaintassistant gov crnt panel1 1
