What is SEE Learning?DefinitionSEE Learning means Social, Emotional, and Ethical Learning. It is an education program that supplements the Woodward academic experience, teaching important skills that help our students do well in school and life—such as being kind, understanding others, and being strong when things get tough. This is consistent with Woodward’s mission of developing “students and graduates who are caring and compassionate global citizens.”Importance of SEE Learning Research shows that when students feel happy, calm, and confident, they're more focused and ready to learn. But when they're stressed or upset, it can be hard for them to focus and do their best. That's where SEE Learning comes in. At the heart of SEE Learning is an understanding that we're all connected and that everyone has a basic desire to be happy and do well. This helps students be better prepared to handle the challenges of life and school.SEE Learning in Our CurriculumSEE Learning is part of the curriculum for students from preK to 12th grade, and it's adjusted to fit each age group: “SEE Learning helped me manage stress efficiently and improve my attentiveness in class. I gained compassion for myself, which motivated me to succeed,” said Maddy Hall, an Upper School Compassion Course student.Nationally RecognizedWoodward is a leader in SEE Learning nationally, thanks to our partnership with Emory University. Emory created this program to give teachers tools to help students grow their emotional, social, and ethical skills. Schools across the country are including SEE learning as part of their education. You can learn more about SEE Learning on Emory's website. Prekindergarten to 6th Grade - During morning meetings, students practice greeting each other with kindness and when our chaplain comes to visit, we draw “moments of kindness.” Together, we come up with agreements as a group to make our classroom a friendlier and more caring place for everyone.7th and 8th Grade - In Middle School, we focus on SEE Learning in science to learn about how the nervous system works, handling emotions, and making smart choices. We also teach students how to bounce back when things are tough, maybe taking a short break, to help handle stress better. SEE Learning is not a separate course in the Middle School, but is woven into regular coursework.9th to 12th Grade - In Upper School, we go further into SEE Learning with a special capstone course, advisory sessions where we talk about the importance of forgiveness, and student leadership programs. These opportunities help us tackle real-world ethical challenges and develop skills to be caring global citizens.
