SINCE 2016 127 267 200 kgs CO2 reduced 5 892 000 Hectares Terminated 180 new Australian jobs 11 784 000 Litres of Herbicides Avoided 47 136 000 Litres of Diesel Saved AN AUSTRALIAN INVENTION MADE ON HOME SOIL GOING GLOBAL Seed Terminator is a growth story built on hard work and a true belief in environmental innovation The true cost of weeds Weeds are a costly problem for farmers In 2016 Australia s Grains Research and Development Corporation GRDC estimated that weeds cost Australian grain growers in excess of 3 billion annually and because weeds deprive crops of sunlight water and important nutrients yield losses of 2 76 million tonnes They also put the cost of herbicide resistance at 187 million a year for herbicide treatment and other weed control practices Survival of the fittest The combine harvester collects up to 80 percent of weed seeds during the harvest operation When grain is separated from other materials weed seeds are processed in the tailing return system which can spread those weeds up to 500m across the paddock effectively planting next year s weed problem The weeds that are present at harvest time are the fittest weeds of the year They have survived a variety of agronomic practices from diverse cropping rotations and narrow row spacings to increased seeding rates and precise chemistry applications Enter the Seed Terminator The Seed Terminator intercepts these weed seeds at the time of harvest pulverising the chaff component of the harvest killing the weed seeds and volunteer grains turning them into flour This process prevents any weed seeds that may have exited the combine harvester from growing the next year Tough on ryegrass Ongoing university trials in Australia and overseas show the Seed Terminator is capable of killing up to 99 percent of notoriously tough ryegrass seeds Annual ryegrass Lolium Rigidum has been a major focus for testing the Seed Terminator due to ryegrass s prevalence as a weed species and because it is so difficult to kill with a mill This is due to its high fibre to starch ratio meaning it is very tough and the fact that it is very light weight striking the seed doesn t provide a lot of energy for seed damage The Australian designed and made Seed Terminator is a simple attachment for combine harvesters that terminates seeds before they become weeds In 2016 Dr Nick Berry and Mark Ashenden designed and built a multi stage hammer mill design prototype of the Seed Terminator with the ambition of early tests achieving a 99 percent kill rate in harvest weed seeds Partnering with The University of Adelaide the prototype was built and trialled exceeding expectations with a kill rate of 99 percent Capital raising ensued to support commercialisation of the Seed Terminator in 2016 Nine shareholders from the grain industry committed to purchaseing the product once developed further securing the financial viability of the enterprise In 2016 nine prototypes were released across Australia in a proof of concept stage In 2017 23 prototypes were released across Australia in a proof of design stage with updates to the existing nine In 2018 49 prototypes were released in a proof ofproduct stage Innovation has been further supported through the ATO Research Development Tax Incentive with deductions to date totalling 9 2M AUD Product development remains a core focus for the business with ongoing investment Early growth nourished by investment In 2020 Seed Terminator sought and secured support from domestic banks and financiers and after three years of research and development the next generation Seed Terminator 2 was born In 2022 Seed Terminator were successful in receiving a matched 1M under the Accelerating Commercialisation grant scheme building momentum for global production The new Seed Terminator 2 was displayed at SIMA in Paris in November 2022 alongside New Holland Agriculture with a number of prototypes released for the 2022 harvest in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres This will be followed by more released for the 2023 harvests The Seed Terminator 2 is tailordesigned for factory fit release in 2025 with an identical model released for retrofit in 2024
