2022 SCCPSS Secondary 6 12 Summer Reading Program Why Summer Reading While reading during summer vacation may not be a priority for most students it is critical to a student s ability to not only retain information learned the previous year but also to grow in knowledge and literacy skills to prepare for the year ahead Regular reading helps students to develop reading comprehension ability and improve vocabulary and grammar Krashen 2004 Reading can also help to nurture empathy Laminack Kelly 2019 and strengthen content knowledge ILA 2018 Reading over the summer is not a suggestion to keep kids busy it is a critical component of helping students grow as readers and thinkers for their entire educational career and beyond What Should I Read Students should read or listen to between 2 4 books over the summer Ebooks audiobooks and graphic novels are all acceptable options for summer reading Students should select books that interest them and that they will actually enjoy reading At the end of this document are some recent titles that have been recommended by librarians and other educators These are just recommendations and always be sure to research a book before you read it to make sure that it s suitable and something that you ll be interested in You can find more information about these books at this Google Books page Where Can I Find Good Books to Read The best way to get good books is through libraries Here are some library resources for accessing ebooks and audiobooks Live Oak Public Library s Student PLAY program lets students use their student ID information as a library card Libby public library app for reading ebooks and listening to audiobooks If you sign up for the Student PLAY program you can use that ID to access the library resources through Libby 1
Sora student platform for accessing ebooks and audiobooks Use your SCCPSS login to access the resources SYNC summer program offers two free audiobooks a week for sixteen weeks between April and August How Will I Document My Reading For each of the books you read for summer reading you will complete a Google form The form will have two prompts to respond to If you do not have access to technology this summer you can answer the prompts on paper and submit them when you return to school in August For middle school students 1 In one paragraph summarize an important scene or turning point in the book Be sure to include WHAT happens WHO is involved WHY it is important and HOW it affects your reading of the book 2 Write a 1 2 paragraph personal response to the book Use the following questions as a guide to write your response What were your feelings and responses Did it remind you of past experiences people or events in your life Did it make you think of anything happening in the world around you or in other stories or books you have read For high school students 1 In one paragraph analyze the impact of an aspect of the author s craft What did you notice about the style language point of view characterization literary devices or structures the author uses Choose one technique you notice the author using in their writing and describe WHAT they do WHY you think they do it and HOW it impacts your reading of the book 2 Write a 1 2 paragraph personal response to the book Use the following questions as a guide to write your response What were your feelings and responses Did it remind you of past experiences people or events in your life Did it make you think of anything happening in the world around you or in other stories or books you have read 2
