www.SeaColony.com/beachSwim Near a LifeguardWhile swimmers must take some responsibility for their own safety, lifeguards are trained to recognize hazardousconditions, advise swimmers how to stay safe, respond to emergencies, and provide medical care for those in need.Learn to SwimLearning to swim means much more than learning strokes; it is learning water survival skills, water safety, anddeveloping comfort and confidence in the water.Learn Rip Current SafetyRelax, rip currents don't pull you underDon’t swim against the currentYou may be able to escape by swimming out of the current in a direction following the shoreline, or towardbreaking waves, then at an angle toward the beachAlternatively, you may be able to escape by floating or treading water if the current circulates back toward shoreIf you feel you will be unable to reach shore or need help, yell and wave for assistanceRip currents are channelized currents of water flowing away from shore at surf beaches that typically form at breaksin sandbars and near structures such as piers and rock groins.Never Swim AloneAlways swim with a buddy so that if one swimmer has a problem, the other can provide immediate assistance whilesignaling for assistance to others on the beachDesignate a Water WatcherWatch all children and adolescents swimming or playing in or around water, even if they know how to swim. Youngchildren or inexperienced swimmers need to be within arm’s reach of an adult at all times. When enjoying the beachwith a group, make sure to designate a “Water Watcher” whose sole responsibility is to keep an eye on those in thewater at all times.Alcohol and Water Don't MixAvoid water recreation when under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Alcohol influences balance, coordination, andjudgment, and its effects are heightened by sun exposure and heat.Feet First Water EntryCheck for depth and obstructions before entering the water, then go in feet first; and use caution when riding waves,always extending arms ahead of the body.Observe Signs and FlagsRead the signs posted on the lifeguard chairs upon arrival to learn about hazards on that particular day. Look for flagsflown by lifeguards or on the crossover gates to advise of hazards and temporary restrictions in effect. Sea ColonyBeach Patrol uses three (3) different flags: navy blue flags designate the lifeguard stand and number, red warningflags are flown when water conditions make it unsafe to swim, and black flags indicate that the beach is closed.Beat the Heat and Block the SunExposure to the heat and sun affects the body in multiple ways. Drink water, avoid alcohol, take sun breaks, usebroad spectrum sunscreen, wear UPF protective clothing, and protect your eyes with sunglasses that block 100% ofUV rays.
