9Welcome to the SDSU Theatre & Dance 24/25 Season! Developed around theoverarching theme: FREEDOM, our season allows us all the opportunity toinvestigate what it truly means to be free. Freedom can manifest in many differentways - from others, from self, and the list goes on. We are excited to share with youthese explorations of the freedom of the human spirit!Fuddy Meers is the perfect play to start exploring this theme! When we first meetClaire, she’s lost and confused in a world where she wakes up every day with nomemory. She struggles to free herself from her past so that she can sort her future, but in this instance, she faces the extreme of not actually knowing that past. There are serious issues addressed in this play - domestic violence, mental illness, abandonment - just to name a few. And yes, this play is a comedy. The playwrightasks us to approach these serious issues with an open heart and an open mind. Wemust laugh or the excess of trauma might overcome us. We are not asked to laughat the terrible things that may have happened to the characters, but to laugh at theextraordinary circumstances in which they find themselves. You are about to entera strange and disorienting world where things may seem just a bit off. The style ofthis play, Wonky Realism, is an artistic style that creates a space that is neithercompletely realistic nor cartoon-like, but rather a surreal and realistic hybrid. We all have things that bind us - past transgressions, familial responsibilities, physical limitations - again, another exhaustive list. The question each of us faces ishow far will we go to set ourselves free. Our characters are ready to push the limits! My hope is that you will leave laughing, but, more importantly, I hope that thejourney home will be full of discussion of your journey to be free! --W. James WoodFrom the DirectorCrewsDuring our weekly Company Call, scholarship recipients and those involved in aproduction come together on Tuesday evenings to work on building a production.
