BROWN’S RANCH LOOP(BROWN’S RANCH ROAD –UPPER RANCH TRAIL)There’s a weird siren song toBrown’s Mountain that pulls hikersinto its FRAESFIELD LOOP HIKE(WHISKEY BOTTLE –TURPENTINE–BLACK HILL)Combine three trail segments to weavethrough a lush basin, shaggy withvegetation and bright with springwildflowers. It also highlights mountainviews, both near and far. From theFraesfield Trailhead, start on WhiskeyBottle Trail. It rambles for 1.6 miles, making an easy climb along the eastflank of Fraesfield Mountain. From thiselevated perch you’ll see a valley floorveined by arroyos. Water collects inlow-lying areas, accounting for thedensity of desert scrub providing abuffet of browse for deer and javelina. After 1.3 miles on Turpentine, makea final right on Black Hill Trail as itangles through the scrub back to thetrailhead. Savor the views of a horizoncapped by the Four Peaks and theSuperstition Mountains. The total forthe loop is 4.6 miles. Hang a right on the Turpentine Trailas it crosses shallow washes, anglingtoward the rocky hump of GraniteMountain. Fine vertical notes adorn thelandscape where saguaros mingle withtall yucca flower spikes, covered inwhite blooms like butterfly chandeliers.Desert marigold and globemallow addmore splashes of spring color. Then inlate summer the aromatic turpentinebush is consumed by a cloud of yellowflowers. orbit. Don’t fight the urge; just enjoy the journey. Thedistinctive formation with the almost-flat-yet-slightly-jaunty top is a centerpiece of the northern section of theMcDowell Sonoran Preserve. Combine two very differenttrails to understand it better. From Brown’s Ranch Trailhead, start on Brown’s RanchRoad, a main artery that’s wide, smooth and effortless, likehiking the moving sidewalk at the airport. As you begin towrap around it, the mountain offers intriguing new looks. You’ll pass Brown’s Mountain Trail (the summit climb) in0.6 miles, but save that challenge for another day. As thepath narrows, vegetation crowds in so it feels like you’reburrowing through a tunnel of mesquite, creosote and soaptree yucca. Remnants of the old ranch can be seenwith a short stroll down the Corral Trail. At the Upper Ranch Trail, turn left, climbing partway upthe slope for views across the preserve. The trail swingssouth, navigating an elegant saguaro forest as it squeezesbetween Brown’s Mountain and boulder-crusted ConeMountain. A series of undulating hills keeps thingsinteresting while also providing a modest workout. You'lltraverse lots of little ups and downs, but the scenery is soexquisite it’s worth the effort. Consider this an easy hikebut with a plot twist. The Upper Ranch Trail finally rejoinsBrown’s Ranch Road a stone’s throw from the trailheadfor a 4-mile loop. BLACK HILL TRAIL best easy hikes

Number Three LOWER SALT RIVERIf a river is more your speed (literally!), head east forpaddleboarding the Salt River (pictured above). Locateda few miles downriver from Saguaro Lake in the heart ofthe Sonoran Desert are several sections ideal forpaddling. You’ll find both calm sections for leisurelyfloating and thrilling rapids for more experiencedadventurers. In particular, many people put in at the Phon D. SuttonRecreation Area or Coon Bluff, then paddle down to theGranite Reef Dam. It’s important to note that if you’re notgoing out with a guide, you’ll need to set up a vehicleshuttle to have cars at each end. Also, while you cantechnically paddle the Salt year-round, it’s heavilydependent on streamflow. You can monitor this yourselfon SRP’s website; 500 to 1,500 cfs (cubic feet persecond) is ideal. One last thing: Summer on the Salt River means tubingseason. Get an early start to avoid the crowds. You have abetter chance of seeing the iconic wild horses then, too!Number Four CANYON LAKE About 45 minutes east, Canyon Lake is one of the mostpopular places to go paddleboarding near Scottsdale.
