Fun and learning through adventure

Skern Lodge, the professional centre where safety comes first

A warm welcome

to Skern Lodge

Skern Lodge has been using the outdoors for adventurous activities and people development since 1976.

We are an organisation committed to the highest standards in all aspects of the business. We are situated on the edge of the quiet coastal village of Appledore, the Centre is set within 22 acres of it's own grounds with the tidal waters and the Atlantic surf on the doorstep, we are in the perfect location.

  • Adventure - comes from daring enterprise and exploring new limits.
  • Enjoyment - comes through the extensive range of exciting activities.
  • Learning - comes from the whole experience of challenge.
  • Safety - comes from the excellent staff and equipment together with tried and well established procedures.
Our aim is: To provide excellence in courses and services

Our philosophy is simple, we want all our guests to have fun and adventure, to learn something new and enjoy themselves safely.

At Skern Lodge everyone has a real commitment to personal service. We ensure each guest receives individual attention in a relaxed, supportive and challenging environment.

Skern values

We provide the best for you

We'll plan and run your programme to meet your needs. Our aim is to provide a life enhancing experience for all participants, in a safe, relaxed and friendly environment.

We improve our own business

We continually invest in the buildings, facilities, activities and equipment. By listening to your feedback, we make improvements year on year.

We always develop our staff team

Exceptional individuals, and a model of good teamwork. Quite simply, we realise our people make the difference - and our customers continue to tell us.

Adventure, safety & risk

Adventure activities are not completely free of risk.

While the chance of serious injury is extremely remote, the chance of a minor injury has to be seen as a rare, but possible outcome - to much the same extent as in normal, active play at home, school, work or on holiday.

We fully accept our obligations and responsibilites in providing suitable care for all our guests, and take these seriously.

We aim to increase peoples awareness of safety education and managing risks.  This helps individuals keep themselves and others safe in a wide range of situations.

Undertaking an activity at Skern Lodge means a lot more than fun and adventure.

Residentials for schools

The Skern Lodge environment is ideal for developing children’s personal and social skills. Team building, problem solving and communication, combined with the range of exciting activities, gives young people the best experience they can have.  Add the residential aspect to this and their time spent living and working together enhances their development even further.  Skills not only valuable in the classroom, playground and on the sports field, but also in the workplace in the future.

Our courses are based around you, we work with you prior and during your stay to ensure that your aims are met.  Your Course Director will ensure that your pupils gain the most from their experiences.

Together we have the ideal programme for an action-packed, safe and enjoyable week or weekend.

Being introduced to adventurous activities at an early age helps to shape and develop children's confidence and help build personal and team skills.

For many this could be their first time away from parents and home. Our supportive and friendly approach creates an environment where children can show and express their full potential.

Young people enjoy themselves on any school trip away but they can achieve so much more at Skern Lodge!

Our activities provide the basis of a great learning adventure.  Pupils are challenged in many ways and are supported throughout to ensure the best outcomes. Pupils build in confidence from their experiences and teachers benefit on the positive impact this has back in the classroom.

Seniors - from 12 years

Many schools return to us every year or even several times in a year with different year groups - there is always something new.

Personal development

The residential experience at Skern Lodge develops young people’s personal and social skills, and can be great fun too!

Team building, problem solving and living together, combined with a range of exciting activities gives young people the best experience they can have; skills not only invaluable in the classroom, playground and on the sports field, but also in later life at work.
