the ron and nancy compton studio overview The School of Ballet Theatre Company SBTC is the official school of Ballet Theatre Company BTC offering classes for students ages three to adult from beginner to advanced levels Its carefully constructed curriculum emphasizes strong technique proper alignment musicality and expression Through a faculty of distinguished professionals its ballet instructors incorporate the best of the French Italian and Russian training methods in a nurturing and supportive classroom environment that fosters the development of young artists Whether SBTC s students dance for fun and exercise or because they dream of becoming a professional dancer SBTC s curriculum prepares students physically and mentally to embrace their next adventure cultivating discipline friendships that will last a lifetime and an appreciation for the art form In addition the students share a facility with the professional company enriching each student s experience by allowing them to observe those dancers in classes rehearsals and performances Students are also offered opportunities to perform with the professional company in productions such as Stephanie Dattellas The Nutcracker 3

the adult division Classes for adults in ballet and jazz Whether you are a beginner or returning dancer SBTC s adult classes are for everyone and taught in a welcoming environment Adult classes are designed to promote an understanding of the technique and artistry of movement while developing a strong and flexible body SBTC s distinguished faculty creates material that is catered towards the experience level of the dancers in each class and offers modifications or different versions of material when dancers of mixed levels are present so that everyone can fully participate and enjoy the benefits of dance ADULT CLASS OFFERINGS DURATION 8 Adult Ballet 1 class week 1 hour class Adult Jazz 1 class week 1 hour class

the junior corps de ballet BTC s Junior Corps de Ballet is a unique opportunity for serious dancers to train at a high caliber experience professional dance at a young age and if interested prepare for a future in dance Entrance to the Junior Corps de Ballet is by audition only dancers placed in Pointe II and up are eligible and the selected dancers and apprentices rehearse repertoire are given several performance opportunities and are exposed to choreographic processes with BTC s Artistic Staff and guest artists Members may also be considered for the opportunity to dance alongside professional dancers in large stage productions Members and apprentices of the Junior Corps de Ballet learn the importance of discipline and goal setting leadership skills working well with others and professionalism in and out of the performing arts world BTC Artistic Staff emphasizes the importance of proper nutrition selfcare and positive body image among this elite group of students and aims to create a safe environment for the dancers to grow technically artistically and personally NEW This Year Members of the Junior Corps de Ballet attend Company Class with BTC s newly established company of resident dancers each Saturday prior to rehearsals apprentices attend SBTC class concurrently Attending weekly company class alongside local professionals is an exceptional opportunity for members of the Junior Corps de Ballet that will inspire the dancers to reach new levels with their technique and artistry Having a resident company will additionally provide members and apprentices of the Junior Corps de Ballet with the opportunity to experience a professional rehearsal environment 10

Photo by Erica Marie Photography the junior corps de ballet REQUIREMENTS Members and Apprentices of the Junior Corps de Ballet are required to Attend the Ballet Bootcamp Summer 2021 Intensive August 16 20 Attend the Junior Corps de Ballet Prep Week August 23 26 Enroll in the Junior Corps de Ballet class one per week and Company Class offered one per week Enroll in all required Ballet Technique Classes offered in the appropriate level at SBTC 1 Dancers placed in Ballet V or Ballet VI must enroll in three in studio ballet technique classes per week 2 Dancers placed in Pointe III or Pointe IV must enroll in one Pointe Technique class per week 3 Dancers placed in Variation II or Variation III must enroll in the appropriate Variation class per week SEASON DURATION The season of the Junior Corps de Ballet will mimic that of BTC s professional company running from August 10 2021 June 25 2022 FEES AND MORE INFORMATION For full information about the Junior Corps de Ballet including program fees visit www dancebtc org junior corps de ballet 11

SBTC level placement policy Students are placed in class levels for the duration of the academic year according to their age and ability at the discretion of SBTC s Artistic Director and faculty Unlike traditional schooling students move through the levels of a dance training program at their own pace and it is not uncommon to repeat a level for one or more academic years Our goal is to provide each student with a solid dance foundation that allows for individual success and accomplishment and all student placements are carefully considered by SBTC s Artistic Director and faculty to help reach this goal Dancers enrolled in training at SBTC should follow the schedule requirements to best support success in their designated training division and class level class offerings for 2021 2022 In addition to Ballet and Pointe SBTC is thrilled to include Jazz Contemporary and Dance Conditioning in its class curriculum SBTC will offer all in studio classes with a remote option to accommodate families who still wish to train at home Please contact the School Administrator by September 5th if you wish to train remotely for the 2021 2022 Academic Year OTHER CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Jazz Jazz classes offer a combination of commercial and Broadway style aesthetics further developing dancers versatility and overall performance quality Contemporary Contemporary will be an exploration of gravity in movement floor work and improvisational skills We ll take the time to expand beyond classical technique and play with weight shapes and dynamics Dance Conditioning Dance Conditioning is a strength and flexibility focused class structured to support dancers ballet technique training and reduce the risk of common dance related injuries BTC highly recommends that all dancers participate in a regular cross training strengthening and flexibility regimen to support healthy muscle development while training 12

school policies and protocols The health and safety of students administrators and faculty has and continues to be the highest priority and concern Therefore SBTC has updated its protocols to continue in studio training that allows for inclusion and access for all students SBTC has relied on guidance from the CDC State of Connecticut sources that have established protocols for opening dance studios during COVID 19 institutional knowledge and experience and guidance from individuals who practice in the medical legal and educational professions SAFETY PROTOCOLS As we continue to navigate the pandemic we will implement the following guidelines for all students as we return to in person instruction for the safety of our students and staff We do anticipate that as public health guidelines change to reflect the evolving status of the pandemic we will reassess our guidelines as appropriate We thank you for your support and cooperation Anyone who fails to adhere to these protocols will lose privileges to participate in studio classes no exceptions If you do not feel comfortable with these protocols for an in studio dance experience SBTC will continue to offer a remote option for your dancer However please note that in studio class instruction is preferred for the continued development of all students 1 Masks must be worn at all times Surgical face masks permit the greatest air flow during exercise Only plain cloth masks with no added words statements or symbols will be acceptable while in the studio 2 Washing and sanitizing hands Dancers must wash their hands use hand sanitizer upon entering and will be encouraged to wash and sanitize throughout their time at BTC 3 Students will be asked to assist in wiping down ballet barres We are pleased to announce that SBTC s student parent lobby office and common areas will reopen for the year CODE OF CONDUCT SBTC is committed to providing a safe positive learning environment for its students SBTC understands that bullying creates an atmosphere of fear and intimidation which is distracting from the organization s mission and may lead to more serious issues of violence Anyone who witnesses or experiences any act of bullying by a SBTC student should report it to their teacher or staff member immediately SBTC holds a zero tolerance policy for bullying All complaints of bullying will be investigated and addressed To fully read SBTC s Code of Conduct please visit our website at www dancebtc org 16

school policies and protocols ATTENDANCE Regular attendance is required and very important for all dancers in studio and virtual to progress successfully If a dancer misses a class it is their responsibility to make up for the missed class SBTC s School Administrator must be contacted prior to a dancer attending a makeup class Classes that a dancer misses in studio remote may be made up in a level below their placed level It is not SBTC s responsibility to make arrangements for students to make up missed classes If a student misses four or more classes in a term without making up those classes it is at the Artistic Director s sole discretion to move a student to a lower level until makeups are completed For the 2021 2022 class year special exceptions may be made due to local state or federal guidance related to the current pandemic CLASS CANCELLATIONS SBTC has the right to alter or cancel any classes offered for situations that may occur including but not limited to insufficient enrollment faculty availability inclement weather etc If SBTC cancels a class due to inclement weather dancers and families will be notified through email Facebook and BTC s website If the schedule allows SBTC will shift classes to its remote platform If classes switch to a remote platform due to inclement weather families will be notified via email 17

Recipients of SBTC s 2021 Flexibility and BTC awards student showcase SBCT s annual student performance At the end of the school year all dancers enrolled at SBTC are required to perform in an annual unique Student Showcase performance The performance will include all classes and levels integrated together to showcase their development and progress during SBTC s academic year The 2022 Student Showcase is tentatively scheduled for Saturday June 5 and Sunday 5 2022 The details of the Student Showcase are still being finalized including location and associated rehearsals Communications of any updates will be sent to families as soon as possible 18

artistic director Stephanie Dattellas Stephanie Dattellas is an accomplished professional dancer choreographer director and teacher Her training began with Ballet and Dance of Upstate NY Inc under the direction of Kathleen Rathbun and continued professionally performing with companies such as Suzanne Farrell Ballet Complexions Contemporary Ballet Buglisi Dance Theatre and others Ms Dattellas has in depth experience developing dancers technique strength and artistry and is passionate about cultivating artists beyond their technique Dattellas joined Ballet Theatre Company as Artistic Director and General Manager in June 2017 Since joining the company Dattellas choreographed and premiered Cinderella Spring 2018 the first full length ballet presented by BTC The Nutcracker December 2018 Sleeping Beauty Spring 2019 and Snow White a live action ballet film which premiered in June 2021 Among the characteristics that make SBTC s training program and faculty attractive is its history of instilling self confidence in our young artists starting by meeting them where they are at and empowering them to believe in their own potential We understand that bodies come in all shapes and sizes and that one method of learning doesn t click for every student I am proud that our faculty exposes dancers to multiple ballet methodologies creating well rounded dancers Stephanie Dattellas Artistic Director 27

Ballet Theatre Company BTC is a 501 c 3 not for profit organization that has served the Greater Hartford area for over 20 years The organization was founded in 1999 as a professional performing ensemble that toured the state of CT delivering classical and modern repertoire Three years following the company s inauguration BTC accepted the invitation of the University of Saint Joseph formerly known as Saint Joseph College to stage its first production of The Nutcracker at the Hoffman Auditorium in the Carol Autorino Center for the Arts and Humanities In that same year BTC established its Community Youth Outreach Program that now serves over 1 000 children annually through four educational and cultural programs spreading the joy of dance to those who otherwise would not have the opportunity In 2015 the company established its training school now known as The School of Ballet Theatre Company that offers preprofessional and recreational dance education for ages 3 to adult In 2018 BTC produced its first full length ballet during its Spring Season which has propelled the company to establish a full season including three intimate in studio performances a community benefit performance an annual professional production The Nutcracker and a storybook full length spring ballet production After 22 years of providing high quality arts experiences to the Greater Hartford community BTC is thrilled to announce the inauguration of a company of resident dancers for its 23rd performance season MISSION 32 Ballet Theatre Company enriches the greater Hartford area by offering professional caliber dance productions dance education for ages 3 to adult and dance related workshops free of charge to children who otherwise would not have the opportunity through BTC s Community Youth Outreach Program
