P«ppg 'Beacft 'R«le1 Hooray! II Warm weather is final-ly herelll Time to go running down the beach, playing with other dogs, stealing vacated flip-flops and check-ing out people's lunch baskets .... or is it? What's this I hear about new rules for dogs on the beach? Can that be right?? Most of the time the beaches on St. Simons are very puppy friendly, but from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day different rules apply. My friends and I can still romp on the beach in the early morning hours and later in the day - or any time on Jekyll, as long as we behave ourselves and stay on our leash, but from 9am-6pm we are not allowed on St. Simons beaches -- but really, it's too hot then anyway. Better to pile up in the a-c somewhere and dream of fllip-flop stealing when the weather cools off a bit. When you are helping pack for By The Coops II the beach, be sure your people are packinging a lot of water, something for dog shade, and even sunscreen for our ears and nose. Yep, we get sunburned tool And about drinking that cool blue sea water ... let's just say I don't recommend it ... I think you know what I mean! The rule of cleaning up after yourself (or having someone do that for you) always applies .... that's just good dog manners! When it gets too hot on the beach grab some like-minded friends and head to the pool, a dog park - or back to that a-d #htgssi I 61

The natural obstades laced by young and adutt sea turtles are staggering, but it Is the Increasing threats caused by humans that are driving them to extinction. Major threats include: accidental capture during fishing operatioos, warming waters caused by dimate change, plastic pollu-tion, ship strikes and coastal development. Today, all sea turtles found in U.S. waters are federally listed as endangered, except for the loggerhead which is listed as threat-ened. Hatchlings lace predators such as racoons, crabs, ants and humans while still in their shells. Once hatched, ii they do not make it to the ocean quickly enough, they will die of dehydration. Once in the water, hatchlings are consumed by seabirds and fish. II they make it to adulthood their nat-ural lifespan is estimated to be 50-100 years. 95% of all sea turtles nesting in the Golden Isles are loggerheads, and like all sea turtles, the loggerhead is completely adapted to life in the ocean and depends on land only for nesting. Only the female returns to the beach. When female turtles reach maturily (30--35 years), they leave the water and dig a nest in the sand on the 64 I HighTideStSimons.com i..~ se&,1so 11\, ••• AIIWli the bAb!::I t1.<.rtLes 11\.ted 1::101.<.Y heL-p Each year thousands of hatchllng turtles emerge from their nests along the southeast U.S. coast and enter the Atlantic Ocean. In each nest-ing season, a female may lay up to six clutches, each containing 100-150 small, white, leathery eggs. For each adult female, this process takes place every two to three years. Alter incubating for about eight weeks, the eggs hatch and the hatch-lings emerge and scamper to the ocean. Nesting season begins when waters reach 70 degrees, usually beginning May 1 and ending mid-October. Generally, female turtles nest on the same beaches each season, with some variations. It is widely believed that hatchlings, when grown, return to their natal beaches to nest We are fortunate to have Georgia's only sea turtle education and rehabilitation facility on Jekyll Island. Open daily 9am-5pm, the Center offers the public a chance to leam about sea turtles and see rehabili-tation in action. They also have several programs specifically for those wanting more involvement with sea turtles. The Ride with Dawn Patrol program offers participants the unique opportunity to see what it is like to be a sea turtle field biologist tasked with daily nest monitoring on Jekyll Island. The morning will be spent

patrolNng Jekyll Island's beaches with the sea turtle patrol team assisting with a vari• ety of tasks, including potentially protecting nests, checking for signs of predatOl'S, and potentially observing nest inventories. The Ride with Night Patrol program shows what it is like to be a sea turtle field biologist for one night. The evening is spent with a sea turtle patrol team in search of sea turtles that nest on Jekyll Island's beaches. If a turtle is encountered, participants will have the chance to assist the research scientists as they leam more about these animals. Explore the beach at night and leam about the amazing journey of loggerhead sea turtles nesting along the Georgia coast on an Evening Turtle Walk. Along the way, guides will lead a variety of activities while you wait for potential nesters to arrive. You earty birds can join the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on a Sunrise Turtle Walk to explore the wonders of Jekyll Island's beach ecology. Your guide will introduce you to the basics of sea turtle nesting and hatching, the ecological history of Jekyll, and any wildlife you C()(ne across. If you are particularly lucky you might witness an excavation of a recently hatched sea turtle nest. Ways you can help protect baby sea turtles during your beach vacation: Turn off the llghtsl When walking the beach at night, don't use flashlights or flash photography. They can deter turtles from =ing ashore or disturb nesting turtles. Don't disturb turtle tracks. Researchers use them to identify species and mark nests for protection. Do not touch or disturb nests or hatchllngs. If you encounter a sea turtle on the beach, observe from a distance. Properly dispose of your garbage. Turtles may mistake plastic bags, Styrofoam and trash floating in the water as food. Remove recreational equipment such as lounge chairs and umbrellas from the beach at night They can deter nesting attempts and interfere with the seaward journey of hatchlings. When boating, stay alert and avoid tur• ties. About 28 percent of the sea turtles found dead or hurt in Georgia in 2015 Sul· fered injuries consistent with being hit by a boat. Boaters Who hit a sea turtle are urged to stand•by and contact DNR at B00-2-SAVE•ME (800•272•8363). Also report any dead or injured sea turtles seen at 800·272--8363. (If the turtle is tagged, include the tag color and number in the report if possible.) Get Involved! The more you leam about these amazing creatures, the more in awe of them you will be, and hopefully, the more dedicated you will be to their protec,. tion. #stsimonsguide I 65
