Thank you for your continued dedication to our mission aseducators and mentors. This year marks the 25th Jubilee anniversary of AUS, and SBA just like other partsof the institution, is contributing to these festivities: we have focused onpromoting social entrepreneurship with our Fall events, and will focus onacademic impactful research in the upcoming Spring: We will hopefully welcomea Nobel Laureate in February, and organize the second conference in March onEconomic Policy and Research in the UAE and Beyond, and the 7th Forum ofResearch in Economics and Finance (in April). We will also host the LuxuryMarketing Symposium organized by the Chalhoub professorship in February. As promised in my individual meetings with the departments earlier this Fall, SBAleadership has been working on updating the faculty annual evaluation criteria forTeaching, Research, and Service. Earlier next Spring, you will receive a copy of ourdraft proposal to discuss within your respective departments. The school has submitted to the University and received approval for twoprograms: a new major in Supply Chain Management, and a Master's program inEconomics, Policy and Data Analysis. A HUGE thank you goes to our colleagues whodiligently prepared the proposals. As part of the agreement with the Al Ghurair Foundation for Education (AGFE), wehave also prepared and submitted a proposal for the restructured MBA to becomehybrid as of Fall 2023. Our faculty involved in the new four MBA core courses havebeen working hard with Michelle, or Senior Instructional Designer, to prepare the“online content and delivery” of the courses. Bee'ah Waste ManagementVisited Bee'ah Waste Management Facilities, Sharjah, on Thursday, October 27th, 2022. Dr. LindaAngell and her students were pleased to be invited to join this outing, sponsored by AUS'sSustainability Office. They had the opportunity to observe Sharjah's highly effective wastemanagement facilities, including recycling all types of packaging materials, dirty water, foodstuffs(via compost), clothing, tires, construction materials, furniture, and automobiles. We learned thatBee'ah could divert 76% of all collected waste from landfill via recycling. The remaining 24% isburned using scrubbers and converted into energy that powers up to 28,000 households in Sharjah. They were interested to see the many varied raw material bales that were ready for sale forindustrial usage to a wide array of companies. We could observe first-hand the cradle-to-cradleapproach to material management in the supply chain.DP WorldThis outing started at DP World's highly innovative Box Bay Facilities, a fully automated containermanagement process expected to transform future management of container ports. This systemrepresents a joint venture between DP World and SMS group, and is currently being commercialized andsold to major ports around the world. . Only one individual can operate the entire facility - and whilerequiring a high initial capital investment - is expected to reduce variable costs while dramaticallyimproving safety and efficiency significantly. The facility we observed is a prototype test facility, and wewere able to tour the site and see the technology in action, complete with Robotic Self-driving Trucks.Afterward, we had the opportunity to visit the current approach to container management, observingseveral central control areas involving hundreds of employees using computers and cameras to operatehuge cranes, stacking and re-stacking containers in storage, and loading and unloading huge containerships. We also received a guided bus tour around the port facility, where we observed ships beingloaded and unloaded. The contrast between the 'old technology' (i.e. the centralized control roomsstaffed by many operators) and the 'new technology' (i.e. a fully automated racking system requiringonly one operator) was very striking, and raised a lot of interesting questions and debates about thefuture of work in the face of the 4th and 5th industrial revolutions.
