SECTION 3SARASOTA HISTORY- QUICK FACTSThe earliest known identification of the area known today as Sarasota, Florida, was identified on a sheepskin Spanish map from 1763 with the word "Zarazote"written over the location of present-day Sarasota and Bradenton.( Wiki) Bertha Palmer settled in Sarasota in 1910, the same year as Owen Burns. She purchased 80,000 acresextending from Manatee County to modern day Venice, at the southern end of Sarasota County, to usefor farmland and cattle ranching. The land holdings she acquired comprise approximately ¼ of modernday Sarasota County. Her home is the now “The Oaks Country Club Clubhouse”In 1905 Mayor Gillespie builds a 110 acre, 9 hole golf course on Links Avenue Charles and John Ringling, the brothers behind the Ringling BrothersBarnum & Bailey Circus, began purchasing land in Sarasota in 1911,and beginning in 1912, John and his wife Mable made Sarasota theirwinter home. It was John’s dream to transform Sarasota into a luxuryresort town to rival the fashionable winter holiday destinations ofFlorida’s more established east coast.During the Florida Land Boom of the 1920s, John Ringling was apowerful name in Florida real estate: at one point the Ringlingsowned more than 25% of Sarasota’s total area. Ringlingpurchased St. Armand’s Key in 1917, and developed its uniqueurban plan of residential and shopping centers laid out in acircle, known today as the chic shopping and dining district, St.Armand’s Circle. Ringling’s circus elephants helped haul thetimbers that Owen Burns’ construction company used to buildthe John Ringling Causeway, which connects downtownSarasota to St. Armand’s and Lido Key.The first documented European to explore the Sarasota area wasSpanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1539. However, it was notuntil the early 18th century that the region saw more permanentEuropean settlement.

The contractor has online ratingsAs with any job, you want someone who is experienced and does quality work. You should be able to research the contractor online and make aninformed decision yourself on whether or not the contractor meets your expectations. Check online to see if reviews are available on various reviewsites, like Yelp, Google and BBB.2. They’re licensed to operate in your areaAsk the contractor for a copy of their license and bond policy. For smaller jobs, it’s not a deal breaker to hire unlicensed, unbonded handymen, butthe contractor should be honest about their situation and provide a clear explanation.3. You’re given a written estimateIt’s important that you understand what you’ll be charged for the work – and that the amount is agreed upon and put in writing. There’s no reason towonder what the final total will be or to be surprised by a larger-than-quoted bill after the project is complete.4. They’re timely and attentiveSometimes people run late or miss phone calls, but that should be the exception, not the rule. A good contractor respects the customer’s time andshould be quick to schedule appointments and return phone calls.5.
