Sarah Waite Chase is an artist located in Richmond, CA. As a gardener for pollinators, especially hummingbirds and butterflies, her illustrations and paintings reflect life. Captured in vivid colors, she recreates her dreams which feature flowers, birds, insects, and the occasional imaginary animal. Sarah believes a connection to nature is the path to the spirit world. Her most recent series, Spirit Fields, was inspired by daydreams and meditation about other planes of consciousness and energy fields—the places and spaces seen and unseen. She sees the two-dimensional plane of the painting as a window to another consciousness with part here in this reality and part in another layer of existence.
Owls What fascinates me about owls are that they live on every continent except for Antarctica and there are approximately 200 different species. They are incredibly resilient and resourceful. During the 2020 California wildfires there was a western screech owl that flew right inside of a helicopterthat was dropping water over the Creek Fire. The owl stayed with the pilot for several water drop rotations before flying away. Owls are considered a symbol of wealth, prosperity, wisdom, good luck and fortune.
Ocean Creatures I grew up near the coast and love the ocean. The ocean covers seventy percent of the surface of the earth and connects people across the world. When I began snorkeling and scuba diving that opened a window to a world of amazing creatures. The first time I saw a wild octopus was while diving in Hawaii. Octopus are very special because they have three hearts. The myths and ocean lore spark my imagination.
Pollinators I started gardening after a good friend gave me some succulents and I managed not to kill them. After succulents I planted flowers for butterflies and hummingbirds. Then I researched host plants for butterflies and planted them too. One of my favorite places to draw is my garden. This collection is a reflection of life and the quote “gardening is an exercise in optimism” are words I take to heart.
Unicorns and RainbowsA mythic creature unicorns can be found through many centuries and across many cultures. I see them as symbol of hope. I am also a rainbow hunter and find the same joy in seeing a rainbow as a unicorn perhaps it is because they are both so elusive. This series is here to bring joy and happiness.
